As part of iOS 8’s new Extensibility features, developers can now create app extensions throughout the system for sharing information and performing actions without actually launching their apps.
What this means for users is that the familiar action or share button (the upward arrow in a box) will now contain way more options than ever before. Remember when Apple added Facebook and Twitter sharing, for example directly to Safari and Photos on iOS? Starting with iOS 8, Apple is allowing all app makers to create similar buttons for sharing and actions. An example of an action (like copy or add to Reading List) shared by Apple at WWDC was native language translation directly in Safari using Bing Translate. Extension support also includes photo filters allowing photo editing apps that provide filter extensions to work inside of the native Photos app.
A year after introducing Touch ID, the secure fingerprint scanner first introduced with the iPhone 5s, Apple is also now allowing apps to take advantage of Touch ID for the first time. Touch ID users can now authenticate log-ins and more in supported apps using the secure fingerprint scanner. Below we’ll tell you about the latest apps already taking advantage of extensions and Touch ID support for iOS 8.

1Password has been busy all summer with creating their own extension, adding Touch ID support, and even creating an extension for other app makers to use in their own apps. 1Password users can prompt their vaults to open in Safari with the new 1Password extension and never have to leave the browser.

And there is an extension to add content to a note.
The LastPass app was updated yesterday to support Extensions and Touch ID for Master Password. I havent tested yet though. Waiting to get to home after work to update my iPad
I’ve tested and works perfectly both Safari extension and TouchID!!! Better thant 1Password 5.0 beacause on this one, TouchID won’t work at least for me.
1Password supports Extensions now + Touch ID, (or if you don’t have Touch ID, you can enter your iPhone passcode as an alternative.)
Simple (the online bank) released an update incorporating support for 1Password and Touch ID today.
Wait! Wait! This is just to good to be true. I didn’t know Handoff was being used in third party apps. I thought it was Apple apps only. “Fragment App: The app also supports Handoff between the iPHone and iPad versions.” This is insane!
For the first time there was no lag in downloading an iOS. Took around 10 minutes but the restore is stuck at ‘3 hours remaining’ ! I thought iCloud restore takes care of the apps and media later and lets you use the phone. Not good for a day at work.
I didn’t need iCloud restore. Just downloaded it, installed it and go!
It’s great
Hmm, that’s strange that it’s running you through the iCloud restore process. The only way that should happen is if when you updated you selected the update and restore option. The iCloud restore process routinely lags (and that effect can be exacerbated by a less than stellar internet connection). The part that takes forever is the initial restore. That’s your personalized settings and your contacts and what not. After that process is completed, the system allows you to use your iPhone whilst music, photos, and apps download in the background.
Great roundup.
I Downloaded ios8 only because I am with tmobile and I really needed the wifi calling option because coverage it not good in where I live.
Well, wifi option is not available in the iphone 5 and it is available in the iphone 5c.
fk u apple. really fk you.
Ali, it’s time to leave T-Mobile. I left last week (AT&T) and my reception is outstanding; no WiFi calling needed!
Add Quip to your list. It works with Document Provider extensions from Box, Dropbox, Transmit. Quip also provides Document Provider extensions (e.g. to Dropbox). It’s also a really nice collaborative editing environment!
OK, I have downloaded a couple of apps that use TouchID but I can’t figure out how to turn this feature on in iOS8. I have both the Amazon app and Mint app but neither ever ask for me to use TouchID. I’m sure it’s a feature I have turned off but can’t figure out how to turn back on…
InBrowser (http://inbrowserapp.com) has full support for 1password extensions as well. Already live on the App Store!
Bro is a private browser that uses TouchID, and works like you’d expect, with left/right swipe navigation and such.

An Photo hiding and locking app Securepad also uses both these features, Extension feature is used to save photos and videos directly from Photos app without opening the 3rd party app itself.
