Re/code reports that Apple will hold its October event, featuring iPads, on October 16th. According to John Paczkowski, the event will feature updates to Apple’s iPad line, OSX 10.10 Yosemite as well as the new Retina iMacs that we reported on earlier this week. Mac mini updates would be nice too.
The event will also feature Yosemite, assumedly the OS will be released soon after the event, if Apple follows historic patterns.
In contrast to September’s Apple Watch announce/iPhone 6 launch, the October event will be more subdued taking place on Apple’s campus at the much smaller Town Hall venue. This means the invite list will also be much shorter than the 2000 or so people invited to Apple’s Watch and iPhone 6 announcements.
Hopefully, Apple’s friendly home confines won’t have the same streaming problems this time around …
The rumor mill surrounding Apple’s upcoming announcements has been much quieter this time around, presumably because Apple has less to talk about. Aside from the Retina iMacs, the iPad update is expected to be minor — likely adding a gold option, Touch ID and an anti-reflective coating on the screen. We also haven’t heard much about the split-screen multitasking since it was left off the initial iOS 8 release.
A ‘big’ wild card would be the 12.9-inch iPad Pro which has long been rumored for early 2015 but as we know from the Apple Watch, Tim Cook isn’t shy about announcing new categories early.
The new iPads will also feature Apple Pay functionality, but are unlikely to include NFC, so proximity-based payments may be off the cards.
For Yosemite, Apple will announce the final release date at the event, potentially timing the release of OS X 10.10 for later the same day.
It is also worth noting that Apple has sometimes synced the timing of its earnings calls with OS X releases. This year, Apple will announce Q3 earnings on October 20th.
As always, 9to5Mac will have full coverage of the event live as it happens.

…on a Thursday?
Wasn’t it originally scheduled for the 22nd?
No. And this date hasn’t officially been acknowledged by Apple either. But Re/Code has an excellent track record so I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt.
The ever-reliable Jim Dalrymple “Nope”d the 22nd date. So it would either be a week earlier or later.
snuck it in a day before the note 4’s new launch date that samsung moved up.. well played apple. why get a note 4 when you can get an iPad mini and the iPhone 6 :)
still waiting for concrete news on the new iMacs
Going to be exciting! We have some tricks up our sleeve for this event, so stay tuned!
Really? iPads and iMacs at the same event? That would be un-Apple like. My feeling is, we will see an event for new iPads, and then a separate one for Yosemite and the new iMac. We will also probably see an event for new iPods, and iTunes 12.
Um, in 2012 and 2013 Apple unveiled new iPads and new Macs at the same event. These days iPhone seems to be the only thing that gets its own event.
Did the iPhone get it’s own event, though?
@Dylan Bystedt
Yes it did, both years.
September 12, 2012 and September 10, 2013 were both iPhone events. 2012 included OSX and iPod, but no full size hardware; 2013 was iPhone only, no hardware.
Really wondering what they’re going to talk about with this event. Usually these devices are announced in June.
Ever since the iPhone 5 came out, the iPads with corresponding processors were announced after the iPhone releases, meaning well past summer.
How is it possible to have the new iPad with Apple Pay functionality but not have NFC?
There are currently two ways to pay with Apple-Pay. One is using NFC at a register. For online purchases, certain app developers have been allowed to add an “Apple Pay” button (Target and Groupon among others). This second mode is what the new iPads are likely to support.
Buy an Apple Watch is all it takes.
Apple TV??
Like … Nope.
New iPads, Yosemite & iOS 8.1 with launch of Apple Pay. Thats what we are getting.
mac mini?
I’m desperate for an updated Mac mini. It’s getting harder and harder to understand why it hasn’t gotten a hardware update or a price cut.
There was an article on 9to5 a few months back that the new Intel chips Apple has been waiting on only recently became available. These are the same chips they are using to make a fanless MacBook Air, and I think in order to make a smaller Mac Mini they now need to take out the HD and Fan. Does that mean it will be incredibly small. Probably. Would you expect anything less from Apple?
P.S. I believe they’ve chosen to not update the Mac Mini because they couldn’t drive Retina displays in the past while making it smaller.
If they don’t announce a Mac Mini during this event, I don’t think I can’t wait any longer. I’ll have to buy a PC…
I’m wanting to switch from PC to Mac. I have a great monitor and I don’t like the iMac price points even if I didn’t. The Mac mini is the perfect machine… if it weren’t two year old hardware being sold at a price as if it were brand new.
That Mac Mini is the dumbest computer on the planet. Laptop components in a desktop computer – why? What does it matter if it were taller? Desktop components would be faster and cheaper.
It’s old news but Apple badly needs a miniTower with consumer desktop components.
Love the pic… ‘ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?’
Makes sense and lines up with what we’ve been hearing. Very excited to see new iPad’s and Mac’s along with any other goodies they have planned.
I hope they un-gimp the color gamut on the Retina iPad Mini so I can finally buy one.
Are you still waiting for split screen?
Geesh
Someone to do it right anyway. That abortion on android is shit. I wouldn’t boast about it.
Apple TV?
No.
My iPad 4 is itching to move. Flaunt a 12+ inch iPad in front of me and I’ll help it pack.
Now I only wish Apple would actually make the announcement that all the media has said will happen yet they have no invites, no official Apple announcement. So basically it isn’t happening until Apple says it is.
Any idea when we can expect an iPhone 5 replacement?
Hope they’re going to release external testing… My testers are dying for something to do
dickheads! Flippin apple pratting around, taking their time to release the new iMac. I’ve just bought the current model as i need one ready for university. Crap timing for students! #definatelynotappreciated
