After Google Reader announced its closure, popular RSS client Reeder was forced to step back, retool, and eventually relaunch its Mac client with support for multiple RSS services. Now, Reeder is preparing to launch another major update to its Mac app with heavy design tweaks for OS X Yosemite.
The design changes in Reeder all seem to center around making the app fit in with OS X Yosemite. The sidebar is now transparent, while the toolbar has also been redesigned to be more familiar to users of the Reeder iOS app.
The company said in a tweet that there’s no timetable for a launch of Reeder 3 and that it still needs some work. Reeder did say, however, that the update will be totally free for existing owners of the app. In the meantime, you can download the current version of Reeder from the Mac App Store for $9.99. Reeder for Mac supports Feedly, Feedwrangler, Newsblur, and several other services. Reeder is one of the most popular RSS readers available for Mac and with a forthcoming design update, there’s no better time to buy.

Great news. Hopefully the bugs in the current version will be cleaned up as well. Every now and then clicking on a headline in Reeder and launching Safari freezes my Mac. ReadKit doesn’t freeze it ever using the same content. I’d rather use Reeder, it’s a better app, easier on the eyes and I own it but crashing isn’t good. I do use Reeder for iOS on iPhone and iPad and both are solid.

I have been using NetNewsWire for about a year now and I like it a lot. After I saw this write-up about Feeder, I thought I’d give it a try. Well, not so good. There were several feeds that i could not subscribe to. Feeds that I easily sign up for using NNW. Feeder tells me that the sites cannot be found. Oh well, I guess I’ll stay with NetNewsWire.
Too little, too late. I LOVED Reeder, it was my go to RSS manager. But then Google stopped their feed and Reeder didn’t bother to update and switch to another source.
Readkit came along and filled the void. Attachment to Feedly and a few updates later and it is rock solid.
I wish Reeder had kept up.
