iPhone 16 Pro: An amazing companion for standalone Sony cameras like the FX3 and FX30

Today, there’s a considerable debate over how necessary standalone cameras are in a world where smartphones dominate digital photography. While this debate has merit depending on the application, it’ll be long before a smartphone replaces my standalone camera, especially as a tool for shooting video.

My current camera of choice is the Sony FX30—it’s pound for pound the best value in digital videography. Instead of viewing smartphones like the iPhone as competition, Sony has welcomed smartphones with open arms by building an incredible app called Sony | Monitor & Control. With this app, you cannot only monitor your feed from cameras like the FX30, A7S III, A7 IV, and others, but it also affords users an insane amount of control—both wired and wirelessly!

In this video walkthrough, I showcase my Sony FX30 camera rig, with the iPhone 16 Pro as its companion. Be sure to subscribe to 9to5Mac on YouTube for more videos.

Six months in, I’ve totally changed my mind about iPhone 16’s Camera Control

iPhone 16 Pro upgrade

Camera Control had a rocky start when the iPhone 16 launched. Early reviews found the button overly complicated and finicky, sometimes feeling more like a gimmick than the tentpole feature Apple pitched it as. I didn’t have the best first impressions of Camera Control either, but that’s completely changed in the six months since I got my iPhone 16 Pro.

iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16

Apple is just a week away from reporting its quarterly earnings, and providing a forecast for the holiday quarter. Today we may have received a preview of what to expect, though. iPhone 16 Pro one month later: This one improvement convinced me to upgrade

It’s been about a month since Apple released the iPhone 16 lineup. As an iPhone 15 Pro Max user, I was honestly quite disappointed keeping up with the rumors, as it sounded like Apple had nothing interesting in store other than just larger displays.

However, there was one key upgrade with the iPhone 16 lineup that didn’t necessarily appear in the rumors, and it got me to pull the trigger.

iPhone 16 and iOS 18 could spur a new wave of Android switchers

iPhone 16 Pro

At this point, you’ve probably read a lot about the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro. You don’t need me to recap new features like the Camera Control, bigger screens, upgraded Ultra Wide camera, or better battery life. I’ll offer some of those thoughts, anyway, but I’ve been looking at the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro mainly through the lens of their broader place in the smartphone ecosystem.

Hear me out: I think the combination of iOS 18 and the current iPhone lineup could be the most compelling package ever for those considering switching from Android.
