Hands-on: The hyper-customizable Keychron Q1 is a work of art in keyboard form [Video]

I’ve been using the super-popular Keychron K2 (review) as my primary mechanical keyboard for the last few years, but I recently decided to give the higher-end Keychron Q1 a try. After using the Hong Kong-based company’s Q1 for a couple of weeks, it’s quickly become my keyboard of choice for day-to-day typing.

Not only is the build quality on this Keychron Q1 several orders of magnitude better than the K2 model, but Keychron also made sure that its higher-end keyboard was customizable from top to bottom. The keycaps, switches, and even the aluminum plate sandwiched inside the housing can be customized to your liking. Personalization doesn’t end on the hardware side, as the QMK-based VIA utility lets users modify individual keys, build macros, and manage shortcuts for areas like media control and RGB.

Watch my hands-on experience with the Keychron Q1, and be sure to subscribe to 9to5Mac on YouTube for more.

Review: Keychron K2 – a great wireless mechanical keyboard for Mac users [Video]

If you’re looking for a wireless mechanical keyboard for your Mac, then look no further than the Keychron K2, the follow up to the original K1 that we reviewed earlier this year. While not as low profile as its predecessor, the K2’s sleek, minimalist design is a far cry from the bulky mechanical keyboards you may be used to. Watch our hands-on video review for the details.

Review: SteelSeries Apex M800 mechanical keyboard with individual key LED illumination

Site default logo image

SteelSeries is well known around Apple circles for its iOS and Apple TV gaming controllers, but the company specializes in other gaming-related hardware ventures as well, such as mice, headsets and keyboards.

After browsing SteelSeries’ site to find some information on its popular Nimbus controller, I stumbled upon its keyboard line. Anyone that knows me understands that I have a special affinity for mechanical keyboards, and that’s exactly what I found on the SteelSeries website.

The Danish hardware manufacturer’s marquee mechanical keyboard, the SteelSeries Apex M800, is not your ordinary mechanical keyboard. It’s a fully customizable, gaming-centric experience that lets you assign an overwhelming variety of functionality and colors to individual keys. While the Apex M800 ships configured for Windows, it’s fully compatible with the Mac, and even comes with OS X key cap replacements.
