A few years after hitting consoles, Aspyr announced today that it’s bringing a couple of the most popular games from the Call of Duty franchise to Mac, including: Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 as well as all DLC for both titles.

The games aren’t available in the Mac App Store, but Aspyr is making them available through Steam and its own GameAgent online store today alongside all maps packs and other DLC. SteamPlay support means you’ll be able to pick up the title up once and play it on both Mac and PC.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 picks up immediately following the historic events of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, with players facing off against a new threat dedicated to bringing the world to the brink of collapse. And Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 continues the series’ epic storyline with even bigger and more explosive action.

While the release is already a few titles behind the console releases, it does bring Mac gamers some great new Call of Duty content including multiplayer for both games. The games are certainly an upgrade from the last COD release to hit the Mac: 2010’s Black Ops.

Both games feature:

  • Cinematic, action-packed single player campaigns
  • Cross-platform competitive multiplayer and cooperative online play
  • Multiple DLC Packs which add new maps and other great content to the multiplayer experience
  • Steam Works integration and Steam Play support
  • And more!

  1. And they’re not available for purchase in the Mac app store because…

    • You (and in turn Apple) could easily refund the app purchased off the Mac App Store.

The App Store version is better because …

With steam you get steam play and can play the same purchase on a windows machine if you ever happen to

      • Purchase reliability across multiple macs isn’t a problem, I don’t ever have to worry about a product key, I don’t have to login to Steam, nor do I even have to use Steam at all, which allows me to not ever have to worry about falling into that “always on DRM” BS that Steam is famous for. I personally don’t want any part of it. And I don’t really care about cross-platform compatibility because I don’t use Windows. So, if they can release it on Steam, that means they can release it on the Mac app store as well. Feral Interactive does it all the time, why wouldn’t Aspyr?

    • There are several limiting factors for publishing big multiplayer titles like this on the AppStore. MW2 and MW3 both have Steamworks MP backends, meaning we would have to rip it out and replace with something else. The problem is, there isnt anything stable to replace it with, and GameCenter only allows for 4 player MP. We would love to have published on the App Store.

    • The difference with COD4 was that the game was made pre-Steamworks. It used its own networking code that wasn’t incompatible with the App Store. Like Michael said, MW2 & MW3 have moved on to use Steamworks for their multiplayer, so there’s no way to put it on the App Store with Multiplayer intact.

By the time it’s available for a Mac, it should be retitled “Call of Duty: Ancient Warfare”

  4. ikir says:

Nice addition, MW3 come out in late 2011 i think.

  5. Onny Yeung says:

not getting it until it’s on the apple’s app store

  6. I owned MW 2&3 on Steam already and played it using Bootcamp, but so far only MW2 shows for Mac. I cannot download MW3 for Mac, any ideas?
