Steve Jobs ISN'T dead – despite Bloomberg obituary error….

 Eagle-eyed Apple watchers may have grown a little misty-eyed this morning when they potentially came across an obituary of CEO Steve Jobs, published by Bloomberg – but don’t fret – news of the death of Jobs has been grossly over-exaggerated.

What actually took place was a simple error, as Cult of Mac reports, Bloomberg updated its obituary for Jobs yesterday, only to accidentally send the story to all the organisation’s subscribers.

"An incomplete story referencing Apple Inc. was inadvertently published by Bloomberg News at 4:27 p.m. New York time today. The item was never meant for publication and has been retracted," Bloomberg quickly warned.

Drive America – iPod connections everywhere

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak may have pronounced it dead, but it looks like there will be iPod connections pre-installed in over half the new cars introduced in the US next year.

iSuppli points out that this trend reflects automaker’s growing understanding that they must pimp out their rides with ever more technology.

"US consumers for the past few years have been demanding improved connectivity between their vehicles’ audio/video systems and their media players, particularly iPods," iSuppli explains.

Seems the response is strong:

– 39 percent of vehicle models sold in the US in 2008 expected to offer iPod integration options.

Atari boss, 'iPhone leading charge in handheld innovation'

 As everyone knows, Apple CEO Steve Jobs spent a little time working at/with Atari after leaving college, working with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak to design games for the company.

Jobs got Wozniak to design a circuit board for the game, Breakout, infamously giving his friend less than half of what Atari paid for the result….

Indirectly, Jobs has begun working with Atari once again...

Flash forward to today and Atari has introduced the ancestor to that game, SuperBreakout, as a title available through the iPhone App Store – that and Missile Command, and is promising to make more titles available to the iPhone/iPod touch platform in the "near future"..

WiMAX when?

We found it interesting that WiMAX was being touted here with Segways.  The two technologies have a lot in common.  When both of these products were announced, they were heralded in the press as ‘the second coming’ tech that would change the world.  Then, as delay after delay after delay hit, the hype wore down and reality set in.

When the Segway was released, it had lost it’s ‘cool, world –  changing status’ and been relegated to Steve Wozniak geek toy.  We still see some around and now they have off-road models and such – but they aren’t changing the world.  They are doing things like giving police an excuse not to walk or ride bikes or horses.

Thoughts on Wireless Access

We were Inspired by Steve Wozniak’s comment the other day on Apple’s stance on SIM Locking vs. DRM locking.  We decided to do something about it.  What if we took Apple’s position on DRM for music and applied it to the SIM locking of the iPhone?  Does Apple stand up to its own scrutiny on the locking in of content and services?  For this experiment we did the following:

  1. We took Steve Jobs Open Letter to the Music industry
  2. Copied it verbatim
  3. Did a Text Edit – Find/Replace on it using the following:
    cd -> Home Wifi
    iPod -> iPhone
    music -> wireless data
    iTunes -> AT&T
    MP3 -> GSM
    AAC -> EDGE
    leak -> hack
    DRM -> SIM lock
    copied -> used
    song -> phone
    Screen
    Capture
  4. Then we cleaned it up and removed iTunes specific data.

Below you will find the results of this experiment.  Notice how just exchanging a few words turns everything around on Apple.
