It’s no surprise that the three major card companies in the US have been taking advantage of being the first with Apple Pay out the door and that the majority of their latest ads and promotions have centered around the new payment service. The latest comes from American Express with a just released ad focusing on highlighting Apple Pay as “The Next Evolution of Membership.”
The ad is supposed to be a quick history lesson of sorts, showing the evolution of American Express by stitching together some of the company’s ads from over the years, many of which featured celebrities such as Tina Fey, Jackie Chan, and Jerry Seinfeld. The point of the ad is to showcase Apple Pay as the latest innovation for card tech, and it’s certainly interesting to see all of the card companies take a similar approach in their latest advertising (perhaps they are contractually obliged through deals with Apple).
The other card companies have launched similar campaigns for Apple Pay with MasterCard’s most recent being a promotion to bring the payment service to the PGA Tour. MasterCard, Chase, and others have aired their own commercials in the past focusing on Apple Pay.
Apple Pay is now available through Visa, MasterCard, and American Express cards issued by over 60 banks and credit unions in the US.

Yet can’t use my American Express Card with Apple Pay :-(
I wonder how long before Discover Card starts seeing a decline in use. I can’t believe they still haven’t “negotiated” to participate.
Seriously! And Ally bank!
Slick ad.
When are we going to see more stores accepting Apple Pay?
Lets just blame Google. Few used Google Wallet and stores tossed their NFC terminals. I’ve still never seen a Google Wallet ad anywhere. Does one exist? Not sure whats the holdup with Discovery Card. I think more and more places will support it in time.
Think abut it for a bit. The Iphone was released in October last year I guess. It’s been 4 months, actually more like 3 months, because Apple Pay didn’t come until like a month later. So really 3 Months time. It’s only supported on the iPhone. There’s about what, 74.5 million iPhones sold last quarter. That’s a TINY fraction of iPhones that support NFC. We need to be onto the second generation of iPhone with NFC, or maybe really coming up on the 3rd generation, giving the iPhone a chance with a couple years to see how it really ends up. Google’s been at it for 4 years and it’s gone no where. 2 years for Apple will be 6 years for Google.
In other places, like Canada, I head NFC in is 90+% of their stores. There’s no Apple Pay there yet or anywhere else in the world, unless you have a U.S. bank card and then NFC will work on those terminals. Last year is was about getting Apple Pay working in the U.S. first and getting any types of issues fixed before expanding. This year I think Apple will start pushing it world wide as they get those banks involved. just in time for the iPhone 6S and 6S+, and the next gen iPhone to have NFC.
It’s going to take time. Sure not going to happen overnight. There’s also CurrectC that’s going to try and throw it’s self into the Mix and end up failing for many reasons, but could slow things up here in the U.S. a bit.
And CurrentC will be using Jayne Mansfield and Ernest Borgnine in their ads . . . With the second generation ads featuring Doris Day and Rock Hudson.
;)
