Tim Cook and Jonathan Ive rank 4th on Vanity Fair 2015 ‘Disrupters’ list

Vanity Fair has published a new 2015 list of ‘The New Establishment’, where reporters rank the most important visionaries in business and culture. Although Mark Zuckerberg takes the top spot in the Disrupters category, Tim Cook and Jony Ive get listed at the 4th spot.

This is down from their previous rank of number three in last year’s 2014 list. In the accompanying blurb, Variety singles out Ive as Apple’s new front-runner using the Watch to become the “creative mantle at the world’s most highly valued company”.

The Vanity Fair piece references Ive’s promotion to Chief Design Officer as a key reason for his position on the list, even though it is still an open question whether Ive will actually exert more or less influence at the company going forward. The report also regards the Apple Watch as a successful launch and milestone product for the company. It also highlights Apple’s hit success with the latest iPhone, selling a record 61 million iPhones in the first three months of 2015.

In an amusing coincidence, whilst Tim Cook and Jony Ive are ranked 4th for the ‘Disrupters’ category, Samsung’s CEO Lee Jae-Yong is ranked at position 17 for ‘The Powers That Be’ category. We’ll leave it up to you to decide which title is better.

The Apple section ends by boldly claiming the imminent iPhone 6S, set to be announced tomorrow, will “feature an upgraded screen”. We’re not sure what rumor they are referencing to come up with this proclamation: you can read our event roundup to see what we actually expect from the new device — an upgraded camera, pressure sensitive ‘Force Touch’ display, Rose Gold options and more.

On that note, we’ll have live coverage of Apple’s September event as it happens from 10 AM PT tomorrow. Alongside the iPhone, expect to see the unveiling of the new Apple TV, new Apple Watch bands and the announcement of the ~12.9 inch iPad Pro.

  1. Ive: “See Tim, if i only had made the iPhone 0,2 millimetre thinner, we would still be on rank 3.”

Interesting that Eddy Cue, Jimmy Iovine and Dre were no where to be found on this list.
