Google Maps for iOS updated with pit stop and 3D Touch support

Google today has rolled out an update to Google Maps on iOS, bringing the app to version 4.16 and introducing a pair of new features. The update adds detour/pit stop support to the app, as well as adds support for 3D Touch on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.

First off, detour/pit stop support means that users can now easily add points of interest to their routes. In this case, detours refer to things like gas stations, restaurants, grocery stores, and other various stops that are made while driving. This feature was originally introduced to the Android version of Maps back in October.

Furthermore, the update adds 3D Touch support. Now, when users deep press on the Google Maps app icon, they can instantly start the process of navigating to their home or work. For comparison’s sake, the Apple Maps app supports using 3D Touch to get directions home, mark location, share location, and search nearby.

The latest version of Google Maps for iOS is available on the App Store. As usual, the update also includes a host of bug fixes. Full changelog below:

What’s New in Version 4.16.0

  • Add detours to your route like gas stations, restaurants, grocery stores and more
  • Use 3D touch to press and hold the Google Maps app icon to quickly get directions to home and work
