Dr. Dre joined Apple as part of the Beats acquisition last year. Dre’s contribution to (aside from branding) is questioned by critics but fans of his work will be pleased to know he announced his first new album in fifteen years, entitled Compton A Soundtrack. The album can be preordered on iTunes now ready for release on August 7th.
Dre announced his long-awaited new release on his Beats 1 radio show yesterday with rapper and former colleague, Ice Cube. The album will be exclusive to Apple, available to buy on iTunes or stream on Apple Music.

this is what i call opportunism…
Can people stop using their position to promote their own music.
Judging by the video, seems like Dre used Apple dough to build his own underground club.
Why do you think they lobby to Apple to purchase Beats? I wonder if this will be available to stream on Apple Music on day one. I thought record companies were against streaming new albums when they’re first released.
….yeah because when one of the greatest producers in the history of music decides to release a new album, he shouldn’t promote it. Good logic.
“greatest producers”??? Huh? No he isn’t. he’s just a rap producer, he doesn’t produce REAL music.
But don’t you see what’s happening? Because Apple bought Beats and launched Apple Music, Dr. Dre albums are a news point on a tech blog! They’ve won their publicity, fair and square.
I’m all for promoting your new album, but on MTV, Entertainment News, whatever.
Not on your own radio show where you are a VP of the corporation/station.
Dr. Dre isn’t a VP of Apple, at least he’s not listed as a VP. Here’s a list of upper management at Apple, Dre isn’t mentioned, neither is Iovine. https://www.apple.com/pr/bios/
Let’s hope he finally comes out of the closet in this one.
wasn’t Detox supposed to be his next album.. this looks more like a complimentary album to coincide with the new movie Straight Outta Compton coming soon…
“grand Finale”?… don’t believe that.
He addressed Detox. It got canned because he didn’t like how it wound up.
ah might have missed that news… well hope this new album is up to the hype.
Wow, another album filled with more N and B words. Great…………..
You don’t like rap music we get it.
I wonder if Tim Cook listens to the words in Dre’s music and gets his freak on. And no, it’s not something I want to watch or participate in. Hahahahaha.
Is there a way that they can keep the music IN Compton so that the rest of society doesn’t have to listen to it? That would be great. Someone should come up with Geo-DRM so the music can only be played in certain geographic locations.
I wonder why Apple doesn’t have an Apple Store in Compton, CA. (I couldn’t resist)
I know that Dr. Dre is just using this as a prime opportunity to market at this point, but I’m still excited to give the album a try. It’s been too long, Dr. Dre….
History tells us this album will suck. Dre and T are too old for todays music, including rap. They were good back in the day but like most things from yesteryear, they don’t fit todays consumer of music.
Design question for 9To5Mac;
Why are the photos half the size of my MBP screen? Is the site now configured for phones and tablets so much that what looks appropriate there unfortunately looks too big here?
As for Dr. Dre’s new album, not interested. There isn’t much that a new billionaire and I would have in common. Makes as much sense as listening to an album titled, “Donald Trump Sings!”
Actually, Dre isn’t worth a Billion, the latest figures is $700 Million. Still a lot of money, but it’s still a few hundred million away from a billion. Just saying.
Is this the same reason you don’t listen to any other mainstream musicians? They make too much money for you to relate to their music?
Will he and Tim ever soooo sloooowly touch each other’s index fingers and magically send this album to all iTunes users?
God, I hope not. I don’t want this pile of crap on my computer.
No wonder this album took 15 years; he filled it with features¡
You must be new to Dr.Dre albums
PSA: There are a LOT of opinions and cynicisms here regarding something that we haven’t even heard yet. No one here knows any whys or hows. Lets just wait until the album comes out, because love it or hate it, odds are everyone here will listen to it.
