PC shipment estimates for the first quarter of 2014 are out from both IDC and Gartner, and as usual the two companies disagree. IDC shows Apple falling to 4th place in the U.S., behind Lenovo, while Gartner has the company remaining in 3rd place just ahead of Lenovo.

Both agree, however, that Apple’s U.S. market share has fallen somewhat year-on-year, IDC showing a drop from 11 to 10.3 percent, while Gartner’s numbers show a decline from 11.5 to 10.8 percent. The differences are relatively small, however, with both sets of numbers show that around 1.5 million Macs were sold in the first quarter of the year.

Apple’s share of the global PC market has mostly climbed year-on-year over the past decade.

Are iPads and windows 8 tablets counted in these numbers? If this includes one but not the other then the real data might be different

I also wonder if they take into account that while there have been people crossing over to Macs, the Macs tend to be usable for a much longer period. I am still using a 2008 macbook at home while I have gone through 2 pc’s in the same period at work. Also like many I am waiting for a mac refresh for purchasing a mac mini to replace that macbook. Which will get handed down as it still works fine.

  3. I always try to ignore crap reports from anal-ysts like these, as they are pure FUD based on imagined data.

Want real results? Wait for the quarterly report from Apple, enough said.

  4. Is this computers $1000 and up? Or does it include the $200 Craptops that HP and Dell sell?

If these anal-cysts say Apple is down they’re sure to be up when they relaease their actual numbers.

Maybe Apple should copy Samsunk this time and start suing all these crackpot analytic dregs who pull stuff out of their asses like it’s fact.
