During the WWDC 2014 keynote, Apple wrapped up its overview of iOS 8 and has officially announced device compatibility. This release is available for developers today and schedules for a public launch in fall.

iOS 8 will be compatible with iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPod touch 5th generation, iPad 2, iPad with Retina display, iPad Air, iPad mini, and iPad mini with Retina display. So it looks like the iPhone 4 is officially dead to Apple.

    iPad2? No problem. iPad3 or 4? Nope. That’s lame.

      /edit Nevermind.

/edit 2 “iPad with Retina Display” is just a odd way to say iPad 3 and iPad 4.

iPad with retina display = iPad 3 and 4….

I think they forgot to put it on the list and/or they were trying to make everything fit on the screen and they wanted to make sure everyone knew that the iPad 2 was still supported

Actually, they did put it on the list lol. They just combined iPad 3 & 4 into iPad with Retina Display

It does say that it will support “iPad with Retina display”, which probably means it will support the 3rd generation as well as the 4th generation.

This is lame. They should have announced new hardware. If they phase out the iPhone 4, they should have announced the iPhone 6

On iPhone 4S and iOS 7, there are features that can’t be used like AirDrop.
Is there any indication it will be the same with iOS 8?

    • I don’t think they’ll put functionality like this in old devices. They need to make people buy the new devices! When iOS 7 came last year, iPad 2 didn’t get anything new (such as siri or camera functionality)…

so all through this, and even on the apple.com page, it shows incoming calls with a full screen contact picture on the iPhone?
this being brought back in ios8 or is there a way to do it again currently?

    • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

I imagine it’s being brought back.

Though that it was removed (it was removed?) in the first place is ludicrous.

Has anybody tried the beta on iPhone 5 yet? So far I just installed it on my iPod and it’s slightly glitchy so i’d rather just wait for the 3rd beta before installing it on the phone. Any insightful thoughts?

I installed it on my iPhone 5, but a whole bunch of apps kept crashing, and for me it really wasn’t worth the while. Some of the animations were slow and glitchy as well. I would wait until a later beta, but it’s up to you.

Yeah, i was suprised that iPad 3 not supported, then i look again to the list, and i realize that iPad with retina display is iPad 3 and iPad 4, Almost. But for iPhone 4 user, just throw your phone please:D

  7. does that mean iphone 5s won’t be able to send “iMessages” to iphone 4 comes ios8?

My wife and I both have an iPad2. Will iPad2 get all of iOS 8 features?

  9. leaveunodos - 10 years ago

why not let iPhone 4 have ios 8 is it just because it doesn’t have siri? why apple why

is it really worth downloading onto the iphone 4s? Or does it screw up the system?
