what bothers me is that we do not hear more retailers adding Apple Pay support. What good is to have all these banks on board without a place to actually use Apple Pay

Get the Mobile Pay Finder App for iPhone. There are many more places than what is on the official list. . Retailers that are not listed are FireHouse Subs, Maverik, Sinclair, Sunoco, Rubios, Taco Cabana, Pollo Tropical, Savers, Big 5 Sporting Goods. Unocal 76, Peets Coffee, Hobby Town, Home Depot, Jamba Juice. Also have seen Jack In The Box, Wendy’s. Albertsons is partial now and working on a full rollout. Plus Starbucks and numerous other Apps. Plus more than 200,000 operatorless vending machines, parking.

I have seen work and terminals ready to be hooked up at IKEA, Eddie Bauer and Cabela’s There are a number of Current C members that have defected such as Home Depot and more are on the way.

Plus tons of Doctors, ChiroPractors, Dentists, Tattoo Parlors, Pawn Shops, Independent Gas Stations, Mechanics, Auto Dealerships, Grocery Stores.

You have to use an app like Mobile Pay Finder to see what is the latest in your area. I have made over 100 purchases with Apple Pay.

So there has been a ton of retail growth. And there are tools for finding it.

Someone needs to inform Samsung, according to them Apple Pay is only available to 220,000 merchants. Samsung Pay OTOH will be available to 30 million. Million¡

    • The difference is ApplePay is limited to banks in the US, and only certain retailers will let you pay with it. Samsung Pay has got into bed with Mastercard, so that will be accepted worldwide at merchants who accept it (i.e everyone). Hence the 30 million figure (I don’t know how accurate that is mind).

Even then, it is the bank that issues the cards from my understanding. And in order for them to support tokenization they would need to work with the banks?

I could be wrong and would love for someone to shed some more light on this as all of this is very interesting.

also bring it to Canada already :(

What ever happen to Google Wallet? Is the droid industry out to copy Appleonce again? I had an android phone once and the apps were full of bugs. I got it because of the screen size but now that Apple has the larger screen there is no need for the poorly supported droids.

The rest of the world has been running away from Magnetic Stripe Technology and its inherent vulnerabilities as fast as it can. Samsung emulating that is going to be seen as a major step backward for financial security, especially in non US countries.

Now they plan to tokenize magnetic stripe information, which hasn’t been done but will yes require the cooperation of the banks just like with Apple Pay. The major impediment to the 1900 banks out of 2000 that are signed up but not active.

Until they tokenize, Samsung’s mag stripe will be I think frowned upon.

If you had a Chip and Pin card, more secure than Mag Stripe, would a merchant want you to use Mag Stripe. I don’t think so especially as they become liable for the fraud. I have heard merchants can deny charges and I wouldn’t be surprised if they were instructed to do so.

Even with NFC, Samsung will again have to tokenize. Some ground work has been laid with Apple Pay.

Samsung Pay will only be initially available in the US and South Korea. I think this tokenization is what will hold it back.

Still waking for Europe to get apple pay :-(

  6. And BB&T is still missing. This is really starting to irk me.

    • absarokasheriff - 9 years ago

Branch Banking and Trust, BB&T is listed on Apples Official List. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT6288 Also missing but announced is TigersCredit Union, Empire Bank and Boone County Bank. Heavy Missouri orientation there. I think the real number will be over 100 when the web site is updated.

      • Well thats new. I’ve attempted to add my cards every week since the launch and it has never gone through. thanks for the update!

    • absarokasheriff - 9 years ago

Each bank is different as far as their provisioning. I would call them. My regional bank, FirstBank of Colorado bent over backwards to help me. I think with the fraud on the front end, they really want to talk to you. It’s been great for me. Hope it goes through for you.

So far, my biggest issue with Apple Pay is that the only place I’ve been that it is truly implemented well in is Mickey Ds, and even then, the drive thrus that i’ve been to don’t have it, you need to go inside. Walgreens and Whole Foods, both retail launch partners for Apple Pay, require me to sign the touchscreen after I’ve already authenticated my purchase via TouchID. The whole point is for the process to be faster and easier.

That and I’m afraid too many average 6/6 Plus users are not going to go through the trouble of using it when its roll out in brick and mortar stores are spotty at best. We are such creatures of habit that until we can consistently use Apple Pay for our daily purchases, I’m afraid people are resorting by default to their credit cards and once you lose that momentum, it’s hard to reverse it.

    • Alex Kac - 9 years ago

The whole point for me is not that its easier or faster, but that its more secure. That’s all I care about. I don’t care if I have to sign, or enter a PIN after using Apple Pay. As long as its using tokenization, and I don’t have to carry cards with me – I’ll be a happy camper.

It’d be easier to use the list above if it was sorted alphabetically….

  9. Tim Lawrence - 9 years ago

Just tried to add my CFE Debit Card and it was a no go. Maybe it is just for credit cards?

  10. Moar merchants!

  11. Devika Girish - 9 years ago

It’s great to see that more and more banks and credit unions are coming forward to support Apple Pay. Not surprising consider Apple Pay allows consumers to store their credit card information on their iPhone and use it to buy stuff at any store that supports Apple Pay, without giving the store any of their credit card information. Another technology that banks have started leveraging in their efforts to enhance engagement, adoption and monetization opportunities is iBeacon technology. For example, Mobiquity Networks recently partnered with app provider Relevant Solutions to allow institutions in the financial service sector to reach out to app users in shopping malls via beacons. Another important thing to note here is that, while beacons are popularly known for their capabilities at delivering proximity marketing message, there is more to them. For example, Barclays bank of recent used beacons to streamline and personalize bank visits for consumers with disabilities. We’ve discussed in detail on how beacons can help banks surge monetization opportunities here:
