Google Voice for iOS updated w/ refreshed design and Hangouts integration

Google this evening rolled out an update to the Google Voice app on iOS, adding several new features and much-needed visual enhancements. Bumping the app to version 1.6, this evening’s update is the first the app has seen since September 2013, and the first major update since 2012.

The update finally refreshes the app’s interface to fit Apple’s iOS 7 design guidelines, nearly a year after the operating system was released. The interface looks much cleaner overall, although the actual messaging window still looks very much like it would have on iOS 6.

In addition to the interface tweaks, the update also adds support for Google Voice integration in Hangouts. The full changelog is below:

  • Updated user interface to match iOS7 guidelines
  • Bug fixes and performance enhancements
  • Support for Google Voice integration in Hangouts
  • Requires iOS6 and higher

What google hangouts integration? Calls are not redirected to hangouts and neither is sms. I checked all the settings and I cannot find where voice integrates with hangouts.

Just heard Google announcing an update to roll out free calling features in Hangouts. Looks, like they have merged both services to take over others.
