With today’s launch of Apple Pay alongside iOS 8.1, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus owners can now use their phones to pay for goods using NFC & Touch ID. Apple states that over 220,000 stores are accepting Apple Pay, but finding nearby merchants can be a bit difficult without referring back to our running list 24/7.
As it turns out, the MasterCard Nearby app has a map view of merchants with Contactless (read: NFC-compatible) POS systems where you can use Apple Pay. Restaurants, entertainment locations, gas stations, and other types of businesses are listed out in the app.
In a WSJ interview, Eddy Cue stated “there’s a lot to do here” regarding Apple Pay, but with the technology already working with the open NFC technology rather than depending on merchants to sign a deal with Apple, the current number of businesses with compatible POS systems is promising.

I believe you can’t use Apple Pay at just any NFC terminal… which means this app will lead you astray.

you positive? I thought apple pay used a little add on for it to work where nfc was accepted?
All visa and MasterCard does is add the token codes. The secure part of the chip on the iPhone works like the chip in any EMV chip card. Then the NFC portion works with any NFC terminal. There is nothing new Apple is doing here it is all existing technology. It’s just more seamless method.
Apple Pay works anywhere there are contactless payments: “Because Apple Pay is based on already existing NFC technology, the service will work with more than 220,000 locations that accept contactless payments. In addition, Apple is working with several popular retailers, all of which will accept Apple Pay in their stores.”
Apple Pay worked for me Monday evening at a Walgreens, where I was apparently the first customer to try it. But at about the same time at a Subway–which is supposedly one of the vendors accepting Apple Pay–the clerk knew nothing about it and I saw no device near the register on which to try the method.
Oh, and Passbook accepted my Chase debit card and my AmEx, but rejected a Barclays Bank M/C and a B of A VISA, saying those banks were not yet set up to work with Apple Pay.
The set up process accepted my BofA Visa, AMEX and Capitol One cards
My BofA CC worked just fine.
I just used Apple Pay at my corner market in Brooklyn to buy a sandwich. I was told I was the first customer who used it there, we were both very giddy.
