Earlier today, Apple seeded the first iOS 8.3 build to developers alongside Xcode 6.3 beta with Swift 1.2. Readers have discovered that the new operating system brings a new wireless CarPlay feature to the iPhone. This means that users can now wirelessly connect their iPhone to the car to bring an iOS-like experience the dashboard. Previously, users would have to connect their iPhone to the car via a USB Lightning cable. We first reported in March 2014 that Apple has been working on wireless CarPlay. It’s yet to be seen how long the wireless CarPlay rollout takes and which cars support it in the future. The new update also, like with OS X 10.10.3, brings easier Google login functionality for users with two-factor accounts:
Additionally, also in line with 10.10.3, Apple has brought a new Emoji picker and some new icons to the iPhone and iPad:
As we first reported last year, the iOS 8.3 code indicates that Apple Pay is coming to China via Union Pay. The Health app in 8.3 has also been updated with links to the Mayo Clinic website in some section.
Earlier today we reported on iOS 9, which will focus on stability improvements and under-the-hood enhancements.

What cars are actually available right now with CarPlay installed? The Hyundai Sonata? Isn’t that it? I see the Wireless CarPlay being a Beta only thing until possibly iOS 9, unless car companies are actually waiting for the wireless connectivity to roll out before they release their CarPlay software update, and that would be the only reason Apple would make this public before iOS 9. So far, all companies that have announced availability in 2015 via a software update are all connected through the lightning cable, i don’t remember them mentioning that you could use it wirelessly once Apple rolled out support for it?
My Ferrari FF has it.
Nice! Picture or it’s not true.
Aftermarket radios have it. I have a Pioneer with CarPlay.
Yes, but cars that shipped with it.
The 2015 Sonta still does not have CarPlay – so frustrating….
Perhaps I glazed over this, but does the wireless CarPlay change in 8.3 ALSO require an update to the car decks supporting wired CarPlay?
If it is through bluetooth (which i am sure it is) then it might already be able to, unless it requires more hardware, in which a company would probably not release it until they refreshed the model of car.
If Air Play is any indication this will be a freakin’ disaster
AirPlay has been great to me especially when compared to Bluetooth audio
This post/reply combo is seriously becoming a staple here an I’ll never understand why.
Details? AirPlay works well.
HI MAME…
If Air Play is any indication this will be a freakin’ disaster
On the Note app screenshot, there is double error in the top left-hand corner – does this indicate that iOS 8.3 will bring split screen to iPad?
Most likely not… It is probably to make the note itself fullscreen so you don’t have to see the list of all your other notes. It’d be nice if it was bringing a split-screen mode
If I recall correctly, split screen multitasking was part of iOS 8 feature list originally, but got delayed. It may be coming to iPad pro, which could be released running iOS 8.3
On the iPhone 6 Plus the double arrow just stretches the note to fullscreen (eliminating the notes listing on the left)
Thats standard behaviour for a 6 Plus, its not on an iPad. Fullscreen button just hides the list of notes
Oh – thanks for clarification
This article tells me absolutely nothing. Is it a slow Apple news day today?
What info are you looking for? This is an early report. More details will surely following in later articles as the information becomes available. It’s not like Apple has publicly announced this info yet. These articles are written based on clues found here and there.
Wireless CarPlay makes such sense, one has to wonder why this wasn’t available from the get-go.
I don’t see it as making sense. First things I do when I hop in my car are: a) slap my phone on the mountek CD mount, and b) plug it into lightning/power c) put on my seatbelt
I suppose there may be some who would rather the option to skip (b) while getting carplay but … seriously I don’t have a battery case and juice up whenever I can. Car has reliably juice.
In the Europe we had the option dataroaming off but roaming within the EU on, this has disappeared in iOS 8.3
Michael if you turn data roaming on the EU option is there in 8.3
Car play is not working in my iphone 6 beta 8.3 version if any knows solution for that…
I fabricated and installed a ipad mini retina as my centre console. Do I win this round? pfff who needs carplay when I got everything I want on my ipad’s screen :D
iPads are nice because of the UI and plethora of apps, but in a vehicle? What you are missing is everything that an aftermarket radio gives you for audio control and tuning. For example, how do you connect amps? Or fade the audio to the rear of the car?
