WSJ chronicles Apple move away from Google Maps and the growing rivalry between the companies

Most of you know what is coming in iOS 6 Maps. However, in a long post this evening, which unfortunately does not include much that we haven’t seen or heard, the Wall Street Journal chronicles the last five years that have saw Google and Apple going from best of corporate friends by sharing board members and agreeing to no-poach agreements to sworn enemies spending a great deal of time disparaging each other in and out of courts. The latest breakup in the relationship, and probably the biggest holdout, is Maps. Apple has used Google’s Maps since the launch of the iPhone in 2007 when Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt went on stage to introduce the new software (above).

Later this year, Apple is planning to oust Google Maps as the preloaded, default maps app from the iPhone and iPad and release a new mapping app that runs Apple’s own technology, according to current and former Apple employees. Apple could preview the new software, which will be part of its next mobile-operating system, as soon as next week at its annual developer conference in San Francisco, one person familiar with the plans says. Apple plans to encourage app developers to embed its maps inside their applications like social-networking and search services. Technology blog 9to5Mac earlier reported that Apple will launch its own maps app in its next mobile-operating system.

Apple purchased Placebase, C3 Technologies, and Poly9 over the past three years to ramp up its mapping capabilities faster. In a rare description of something we have not heard, a use case is explained for the new calendar-integrated mapping system:

iPhone hacker Chpwn (Grant Paul) now interning at Facebook

[tweet https://twitter.com/chpwn/status/209857741949382656]

In what now seems like a rite of passage, iPhone hacker Chpwn (Grant Paul) has taken a job at Facebook following Geohot’s brief tenure at the Social Network.

It almost seems like Facebook is trying to hack together a Facebook phone with Apple people over there or something.

Matrox goes back to the future with DS-1 Thunderbolt Dock—USB 3.0, DVI, GigE for $249

Site default logo image

.

Do you remember all of those ports you used to see on Macs? DVI, Gig Ethernet (har), and separate analog stereo for in and out? Matrox, a company that used to make mad graphics cards and other video devices, is coming to DubDub with a new $249 piece of kit called the “DS-1.” This box brings you all of those old school ports and even throws in a “superspeed” USB 3.0 port, so you can match the speed of the new MacBooks.

Matrox makes a bunch of other highly rated, high-end Thunderbolt breakout boxes that retail for much more. If you are looking for a (relatively) cheap Thunderbolt dock to hide away from sight and hook up to an old DVI monitor, this may be a good pick up. We should have a review unit to play with next week.

Atari founder on Steve Jobs: Apple culture came from Atari

TUAW interviewed one of only a few people to ever hire Steve Jobs, the founder of Atari Nolan Bushnell. As you might expect, he is working on a few iOS projects, and he is particularly interested in augmented reality. These paragraphs stand out:

“He basically lived just below me in Woodside for many, many years, before he moved down to Palo Alto, and he’d just walk up the hill to my house and we’d go on and bullshit about stuff. We kept in contact — I’m writing a book right now called ‘Finding the Next Steve Jobs,’ because I was one of the few people that ever gave him a job.”

Bushnell says even at that early point in his career, Steve stood out. “The thing that people miss about Steve is that Steve was very, very driven and very passionate. He was an enthusiastic individual about everything. He had one speed and it was full blast,” says Bushnell. Some of the qualities Jobs is now known for were some of the reasons he first was able to join on at Atari back in the early ’70s. “We looked at what people did in their spare time, how diverse they were. We never looked at grades, college degrees. One of the best engineers at Atari never graduated from high school, and he was one of the prime architects for the 2600.”

Bushnell says that attitude at Atari definitely shaped Apple as a company later on. “We were focused on merit. And the fact that we can go to work in tennis shoes and a t-shirt started at Atari and it was taken to Apple. Because we said this is a meritocracy, we don’t care where you go to school, when you come to work, we don’t care if you come to work, we don’t care where you are we you are at work. You get the job done, we’re happy.”

Interesting to think that some of Apple’s culture is derived from Jobs’ days at Atari. The book should be interesting.

Adobe upgrades Lightroom to version 4.1

Professional photo management software Lightroom, which is perhaps our favorite Mac app from Adobe, just recently got a big update to 4.0. There are many nasty, little bugs hiding in the software, as with most big updates, which only come out when a wider audience starts using the app.

Adobe addressed many of the bugs today with its Lightroom 4.1 update (not in Mac App Store yet, as of this writing). The free update includes the following enhancements:

More photos of purported next iPhone surface, this time in white with suspect font

Update: We have what appear to be the real deal right here

Following our report from this morning on what may be the new iPhone back plate, MacRumors published three new images that it received from another parts supplier. You will obviously note that the “iPhone” font on this one looks much different from ours and the joints appear to be slightly…disjointed.

We are not exactly sure what is happening here, but this is interesting timing. And, we have more coming in 3…2…1…

Beautiful, if not accurate, renderings of new Retina MacBook Pros [Gallery]

Site default logo image

Our friend, Guilherme Schasiepen, took our description of the new MacBook Pros and (using a bunch of creative liberties) mocked them up.

One of his wishful features are keys made entirely of glass, the same trackpad, and the availability of colors in white and black. The sloped shell also counters what we heard about the Pros, and we have not heard if there will even be a 13-inch version.

While perhaps not as pretty, our original mockups are more accurate.

Check out all of his work on Flickr!

NYTimes: Facebook is hiring Apple iPhone hardware and software engineers to build its own phone

Stop us if you have heard this one before: Facebook is building its own smartphone, claim “employees of Facebook and several engineers who have been sought out by recruiters there, as well as people briefed on Facebook’s plans,” according to the New York Times.

The company has already hired more than half a dozen former Apple software and hardware engineers who worked on the iPhone, and one who worked on the iPad, the employees and those briefed on the plans said.

This is the third effort for Facebook, according to the report, with a HTC joint venture codenamed “Buffy” still in progress. HTC released a set of Android phones last year named “Salsa” and “Status” with deep Facebook integration on the way to hugely disappointing sales and earnings.

One engineer who formerly worked at Apple and worked on the iPhone said he met with Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s chief executive, who then peppered him with questions about the inner workings of smartphones. It did not sound like idle intellectual curiosity, the engineer said; Mr. Zuckerberg asked about intricate details, including the types of chips used, he said. Another former Apple hardware engineer was recruited by a Facebook executive and was told about the company’s hardware explorations.

Apple was mere betas away from releasing iOS 4 with Facebook integration—the way Twitter is currently built into iOS. Something at the last minute, perhaps related to Facebook pulling support for Ping, made Apple pull the plug. Apple then integrated with Twitter a year later.

Facebook recently announced a cross-platform web App Center for mobile device application distribution that is aimed at building a smartphone platform, an updated Messenger app with read receipts, a Pages Manager, as well as a specialized photo application that replicated features of Instagram (which it purchased just weeks before).

Facebook is approaching 1 billion users globally with more than half of them being mobile. Apple CEO Tim Cook expressed appreciation for Facebook and its founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Is Apple building a haptic/optical stylus for its tablets?

Not likely… but it has decided to patent an optical stylus anyway. We will also go ahead and note the fatty nature of that big iPhone thing pictured below:

It would be quite amusing if Apple tried to use this patent to take out Samsung’s Galaxy Note.

Another patent released today details a different type of Stylus—one with haptic feedback. Also, do not expect to see this at any point in the future. (via Unwired View)

Apple seen at 6% of the Chinese smartphone market but rising

From Chinese search engine Baidu:

In the first quarter of 2012, Nokia, counterfeit (shanzhai) mobile phones and Samsung remain in the top three mobile Internet slots, with market shares of 22 percent, 16.1 percent and 10.4 percent respectively. Nokia’s mobile market share continues to drop, with 5.8 decrease month-by-month and 18.4% drop year-on-year. Shanzhai phones’ market share is also steadily decreasing, with 4.3 percent decrease month-by-month and 10.3 percent drop year-on-year.

Although Nokia still remains one of the biggest mobile brands by market share, it is faces a dire future if it does not innovate in an industry that is gradually gravitating towards smart phones. Apple now occupies the 4th spot with 5.9 percent of the market share, while Chinese brand Huawei has performed well in recent years, currently ranks 5th in market share with 4.6 percent.

Microsoft recently boasted that it passed Apple in China with Windows Phone 7, which is likely on top of Nokia’s past success in the Mainland and that the iPhone is not offered by the largest Chinese carrier, China Telecom.

Perhaps most troubling, however, is when you add Microsoft and Apple’s market share together. It still does not approach the combined market share of the counterfeit phones that are currently a whopping 16 percent of the market.

China has a long way to go.
