Apple’s MacBook SSD OEM Samsung takes wraps off pair of monstrous 2TB internal solid-state drives

From 9to5Toys.com:

Samsung-850-Pro

Samsung today has announced that it will be adding a 2TB option to its 850 EVO and PRO 2.5-inch internal solid-state drive offerings. Previously, the largest sized capacity was 1TB for both models, which have been on the market since last year. These new models will ship with a hefty price tag to match the larger storage capacity.

While these won’t fit in any recent MacBook/Pro/Airs, the new SSDs will allow you to upgrade older non-Retina SATA III MacBook Pros or Mac Minis/iMacs to 2TB drives.

More importantly, however, it means that 2TB PCI SSDs that will work withApple’s current and future Macs are right around the corner. We’d hope and expect that Apple would adopt 2TB SSD products within a year’s time.

The 850 EVO line includes a five-year warranty and can deliver read/write speeds of 540/520MB per second. Samsung’s 850 PRO solid-state drives double the warranty to ten-years and offer a slight speed bump of 550/520MB per second. Each product includes Samsung’s 3D Vertical NAND technology which stacks memory on top of each other enabling larger capacities and reduced power consumption, according to the manufacturer. Both models are consumer favorites, dominating the top spots in Amazon’s best-sellers list.

While a release date has yet to be announced, the EVO series is expected to carry a $800 price tag while a 25% price bump to $1,000 will deliver the PRO version. Samsung states that it will be expanding its mobile solid-state offerings with larger mSATA and M.2 form factors in the near future to address the laptop and gaming PC market.

In need of storage now? 9to5Toys currently has Samsung’s 850 EVO 500GB model on sale.

Samsung Electronics Leads Consumers into the New Era of Multi-Terabyte SSDs with Launch of 2-TB 850 PRO and 850 EVO

Samsung Electronics, a market leader in advanced memory technology and an innovator in consumer electronics, introduced the 2-terabyte (TB) 850 PRO and 850 EVO solid state drives (SSDs). Samsung’s 3D Vertical NAND (V-NAND) based retail SSD lineup now features 20 different products with a wide range of capacity options from 120 gigabyte (GB) to 2TB. Available in 50 countries, the launch of the 2TB drives addresses the ever-increasing consumer demand for high-performance and high-capacity memory solutions.

“Samsung experienced surge in demand for 500 gigabyte (GB) and higher capacity SSDs with the introduction of our V-NAND SSDs. The release of the 2TB SSD is a strong driver into the era of multi-terabyte SSD solutions,” said Un-Soo Kim, Senior Vice President of Branded Product Marketing, Memory Business at Samsung Electronics. “We will continue to expand our ultra-high performance and large density SSD product portfolio and provide a new computing experience to users around the globe.”

The new 2TB 850 SSD PRO and EVO drives remain in the same 7-millimeter, 2.5-inch aluminum case as their predecessors did. Equipped with Samsung’s advanced chip solutions, including 128 individual Samsung 32-layer 128Gb 3D V-NAND flash chips, an upgraded high-performance MHX controller that supports 2TB capacity, and four 20nm-class process technology-based 4Gb LPDDR3 DRAM chips, the 2TB 850 family provides industry-leading performance and power efficiency. With added capacity, professionals and consumers can experience a smoother computing environment prepared for the intense demands of rich content such as 4K UHD video editing and viewing.

Samsung guarantees the 2TB 850 PRO for 10 years or 300 terabytes written (TBW), and the 2TB 850 EVO for five years or 150 TBW.

From 9to5Toys.com:

As the noise begins to die down from Monday’s Apple Watch announcement, we’re seeing a number of accessory makers reveal solutions for charging and storing the timepiece. Twelve South has announced its latest HiRise iteration, designed specifically for docking Apple Watch.

Much like previous models from Twelve South, the HiRise for Apple Watch elevates the device to a level that makes all buttons accessible for easier manipulation. It has a built-in cord management solution to keep the MagSafe charger in place, snaking through the aluminum base while keeping it out of sight.

The HiRise for Apple Watch uses both the magnetic pull of the MagSafe charger and a small cutout to hold the device in place. Additionally, that same magnet will also keep your watch still even when a band is not present. It has silicone accents throughout the dock, which are designed to offer scratch protection. It also has a non-slip rubber base for keeping the HiRise in place while interacting with the device. This dock is slated to ship in two colors: silver and black.

At $49.99, the Twelve South’s HiRise for Apple Watch offers a docking solution that falls in line with the pricing we’d expect for this type of solution. Availability has yet to be released, but interested consumers can sign up for an alert via the HiRise product page for when it comes to market.

Griffin introduces an all-in-one charging solution for Apple Watch and iPhone

From 9to5Toys.com:

Following Apple’s latest product announcement today, we are beginning to see companies release charging and storage solutions for the Apple Watch. Popular accessory maker Griffin Technology has revealed its WatchStand, which provides an angled charging platform for the watch and a base for displaying an iPhone. This is the first combination Watch and iPhone accessory that we’ve seen, although it’s unlikely to be the last.

http://youtu.be/CUg6BGgpS_4

The WatchStand from Griffin provides a pedestal that encases the MagSafe charger for the Apple Watch. The arm extends to an angled cradle allowing for the device to rest in a horizontal orientation above a nightstand or coffee table at an easily viewed location. The MagSafe connector itself lays in a recessed location at the top, with the cable snaking down through the arm hiding it until the base. griffin-watch-stand

Beneath the arm, you’ll find an angled platform with a lip at the edge to rest an iPhone. The back of the device rests on the arm, keeping it upright for viewing while it rests. Unlike the DODOcase charging stand that we have previously seen, this option from Griffin answers two storage needs for devices that users commonly keep close at night.

Griffin is planning to release the WatchStand this Summer at a price of $29.99. Until then, we are certain that more accessories and charging solutions will be released soon.

Griffin Introduces WatchStand, Elegant Charging & Display Dock for Apple Watch

Nashville, Tenn. – March 9, 2015 – Griffin Technology, creator of award-winning and thoughtfully designed mobile accessories, announces the Griffin WatchStand, the first accessory in their new line of products for Apple Watch. This simple yet elegant charging and display dock provides a safe, secure place to charge Apple Watch when it’s not being worn.

“The introduction of the Apple Watch ushers in what is bound to be the next generation of wearable technology,” said Mark Rowan, President of Griffin Technology. “Griffin has long been at the forefront of developing solutions for Apple’s newest devices and we’re continuing that legacy with our WatchStand charging dock for Apple Watch.”

WatchStand displays Apple Watch on a sleek pedestal, and can be placed on any nightstand, tabletop or desktop for convenient daily charging. WatchStand houses the Apple-provided MagSafe charging cable in an angled cradle that keeps it ready to charge at all times. For initial assembly, the user simply feeds the MagSafe cable through the center of the post, and then, to charge each day, lays the Apple Watch against the cradle. The MagSafe connector’s magnet gently snaps itself onto the back of the watch and begins charging.

The versatile WatchStand is compatible with all versions of the Apple Watch and holds it at an easy viewing angle as it charges. Accommodating both semi-flexible and fully flexible bands, WatchStand securely displays and charges Apple Watch vertically or horizontally for the perfect view.

Since Apple Watch and iPhone go hand in hand, WatchStand’s weighted base has a home for a phone as well. The raised lip on the front of the dock holds the phone at the perfect angle for easy viewing. WatchStand also solves cable management problems, with a grooved post for extra cord length to wrap neatly around, keeping tabletops uncluttered, and the charge cable from becoming crimped or tangled.

Griffin’s WatchStand will be available Summer 2015 for $29.99 from store.griffintechnology.com/watchstand. To see Griffin’s new charging dock for Apple Watch in action visit: http://youtu.be/CUg6BGgpS_4

littleBits introduces its own DIY Smart Home Kit, a look at your options for creating an internet-connected home

From 9to5Toys.com:littlebits-smart-home-kit

Home automation possibilities are endless and what our homes will be like in the coming 5, 10 or 15 years is truly unknown. It is a constantly evolving sector of the technology scene that continues to grow each day with every new product announcement. From WeMo to SmartThings, Z-Wave to ZigBee, someone somewhere has something that will satisfy your home automation needs.

The reality is that we are in a time of great change, with internet-connected offerings in nearly every product category, even coffee makers. It’s an industrial revolution happening in your home and with that comes a lot of trial and naturally, error. So how does one choose?

There seems to be two options, one for the basic consumer, which includes your WeMo outlets, Philips Hue, etc. On the flip side you’ve got the open source crowd that wants to tinker and tweak and create their own system, and this is where littleBits comes in. While most of the aforementioned products have structured ecosystems and physical designs, with the ability to communicate via If This Then That (IFTTT) or the like, littleBits has gone to the complete opposite end of the spectrum.

We’ve covered littleBits in the past, with its WiFi-enabled cloudBit that “snaps the internet to anything”, allowing for custom Sonos-esque or Nest-like creations. At first glance its whole line of products feels overwhelming, and would appear to scare off anyone that was not familiar with the goals of littleBits. Today, they’ve expanded that line of Bits with the hopes of fully empowering consumers to create any home automation system that they’d like.

littlebits-smart-ac

With the $249 Smart Home Kit from littleBits, consumers can get their hands on a 14 module set filled with sensors, LEDs, transmitters and sound triggers. At first glance, it is admittedly a little overwhelming. But once you take the time to dig into the possibilities that littleBits affords users, it is easy to see why its route to home automation can give consumers a massive amount of freedom. Instead of being locked in to an ecosystem, trying to trigger your WeMo when the Nest thermostat says you are home, littleBits is attempting to put all that power in your own hands. With that, comes the need for setup and the required desire to build your own system.

If you don’t know or are not willing to learn how to, then some of those other offerings from WeMo or SmartThings may be better suited for you. If you are into the this level of customization, you’ll want to check out littleBits’ offerings.

The basic setup allows users to specifically configure their system to their own specifications by piecing together individual modules that help trigger different actions. For example, utilizing the USB power module, MP3 player, a speaker and a ‘servo’ you can create a blind-opening-music-playing wakeup system. A number+, USB power, temperature sensor, cloudBit combo will allow you to control your window air conditioner. You get the idea, the possibilities are endless.

littlebits-smart-home-sms-doorbell

littleBits offers the $249 Smart Home Kit for pre-order starting today, with an estimated ship date of early December. Amazon has the entire line of littleBits products, available as full kits or individual pieces.

A good comparison for the littleBits line of products is the recently released Belkin WeMo Maker, which applies many of the same DIY principles to home automation. Although it does not offer some of the customization features, such as an MP3 player or speakers, it does have a more advanced level of hackability within the confines of the WeMo ecosystem.

Ultimately, we end this article where we started it, with consumer choice. Creating a home automation system is both exciting and daunting, and consumers have to make the choice for what is best for them. One positive of the current smart home landscape is the massive amount of choice afforded to consumers. The good news is that this encourages competition, which is good news for anyone considering going this route.

It’s hard to tell when the home automation market will become more focused and universal. Perhaps Apple’s HomeKit will play a role in that development once it is released. But in a world where Google and Samsung are buying interests in this area, a segregated marketplace is likely for the foreseeable future.

littleBits LAUNCHES Smart Home Kit

The DIY solution to your own smart home

NEW YORK, New York, November 18, 2014 – littleBits Electronics, the company aiming to democratize hardware, today announced the launch of the littleBits Smart Home Kit, the ultimate kit of parts to turn any home into a smart home. With this unveil, littleBits is extending the power of the recently launched cloudBitTM, which lets you “snap the internet to anything”, making it possible for anyone to DIY their own smart devices.

“Our mission is to put the power of electronics in the hands of everyone, and to break down complex technologies so that anyone can build, prototype, and invent. Democratizing the smart home industry is one more step in delivering on that promise,” said Ayah Bdeir, founder and CEO of littleBits. “The Smart Home Kit is bring their home to the 21st century, on their own terms recreate a popular smart device, retrofit an old appliance, or invent something entirely new that may be the next big thing.”

In 2013, there were a mere 5.5 million connected homes in the United States. In the next two years, that number will increase to more than 31 million with the market poised to become a $71 billion industry by 2018. Today, companies are telling you to throw out all of your “dumb” home appliances and buy their new “smart” versions: from coffee machines and lights to speakers and refrigerators. This approach is expensive, unrealistic, and unnecessary. With the launch of the littleBits Smart Home Kit, an industry that has been the domain of expert installers and required steep financial investments, is now accessible to everyone.

The littleBits Smart Home Kit has already been used to create some popular applications such as smart refrigerators, internet connected speakers and smart lighting system. But more importantly, the Smart Home Kit allows people to build solutions that are completely new and unique such as retrofitted curtains to open at sunrise, remote feeders that respond to quirky pets, and a toilet paper roll that keeps you stocked. The possibilities are infinite.

The Smart Home Kit comes with 14 Bits, including the instrumental cloudBit, and five brand new Bits: MP3 player, Threshold, Number, Temperature Sensor, and IR transmitter. Also included is an infographic poster with 14 projects ideas and 11 accessories – including the brand new AC switch, which connects the littleBits 5V system to AC power (110V). It’s available online starting today for $249 at littleBits.cc/kits/smart-home-kit .

Additionally, this month littleBits rolled out its products to RadioShack stores across the U.S. The retail partnership was first announced in June among select stores and as of now is extended to include 2,000 stores nationwide. Beginning in December, the Smart Home Kit will be available in select RadioShack locations.
