How-To: Disable iOS SpringBoard animations and make your Home screen feel faster [Video]

One of the things that makes iOS special is its SpringBoard animations. The animations help orient the user around iOS using 3D space.

But not everyone is a fan of iOS’ animations — some for purely aesthetic reasons and others for health reasons. With this in mind, Apple has provided a way to reduce the animations using the Reduce Motion switch found in the Accessibility settings. Even with that option available, some wish to take the reduction of animations even further and disable them altogether.

Up until now, many of the available options for disabling animations relied on jailbreaking. But a new iOS glitch found by a redditor makes it possible to completely get rid of SpringBoard animations until you reboot your iPhone. Watch our step-by-step video walkthrough inside to see how.

Facebook open-sources ‘Pop’, the animation framework that drives the visual effects in Paper

Facebook has open-sourced a lot of stuff recently, but this is what most developers have been waiting for. Developed originally at Push Pop Press, and refined by Facebook, the company has today released its Pop animation framework publicly. Developers can check out the code from the GitHub repository.

The library enables rapid development of rich animations for iOS (and Mac) apps. Although Core Animation, (Apple’s built-in framework) is well suited to fire-and-forget animations, Pop was created to work seamlessly with modern interactive physics-centric user interfaces.

Google updated its universal iOS app today with a couple of noteworthy improvements including smoother animations and scrolling on the iPhone and iPod touch. It also features the ability to save picture attachments to the iOS photo library by tapping and holding an image as well as the usual bug fixes.

Today we released version 1.3 of the Gmail app for iOS.  We’ve made a bunch of under the hood changes to improve animation, scrolling, and responsiveness on the iPhone and iPod touch. You’ll notice that many events in the app are just a little bit faster and smoother. Buttons respond to presses a little more quickly, scrolling is smoother and new views transition faster.  With this update, we tried to make it a little better with every touch. We’ve also added one popularly requested feature – when viewing a picture attachment, you can now use a long press (touch and hold) to save it to your photo library.

What’s New in Version 1.3

– Smoother animation and scrolling on iPhone and iPod touch.
– Save picture attachments to your photo library. Touch and hold an image to save it.
– Bug Fixes
