Covers removed from first Apple Store in Turkey, showing a mostly-glass design

Turkish websites DonanimHaber and iPhoneTurka provide our first look at Apple’s first Turkish store now the covers have been removed, revealing a mostly-glass design. Like the iconic 5th Avenue store in NYC, what is visible above ground is simply an empty glass space, though in this case it’s a lower and more subtle skylight than the famous glass cube.

The store, located in the Zorlu Center mall in Istanbul, opens at 10am on Saturday (5th April). There are unconfirmed reports that Tim Cook and Turkish President Abdullah Gül will attend the opening. Cook met with the President in February, and Apple appears to view the country as an important market, with talk of a $4B plan to put iPads into Turkish schools.

We first told you the store was on the way last November, we learned in February that it would open in April and we recently heard from employees that it features two Genius Bars, two full floors of stock, a sales floor and a dedicated ‘family room.’

Istanbul uniquely straddles two continents, Europe and Asia, and it has been reported that Apple is already preparing to open a second store on the Asian side of the city.

Apple now has 424 retail stores in 16 countries.

  1. Sorry for being nit-picky, but the capital of Turkey would be Ankara, not Istanbul.

  2. It’s just sad our Turkish friends won’t be able to use their devices for twitter or youtube

When I first saw the glass walls, I wondered how come there was nothing in the store. I didn’t realize everything was underground and wow, that is some spacious store. For a company that’s claimed to be going out of business, Apple is surely doing it in high style. With 424 stores, it would almost be impossible for Apple device sales to come to a full stop like so many analysts claim will happen. Something would really have to go wrong over a long period of time for everyone to suddenly give up using Apple products.

I don’t think anyone lately is saying Apple is going out of business, just perennially DOOOOMED. It’s been a constant headline since the original Macintosh was introduced way back in 1984. There have been thousands upon thousands of predictions about Apple’s demise over the last 30 years, and yet Apple is now the most valuable company on Earth. You’d think that writers would get embarrassed for being wrong so many times.

It is Istanbul not Instanbul, typo…
