Izik recently launch as a tablet-optimized app that allows users to browse the Web in a “fun and playful manner.” The app’s description gives the following example:

Type in the name of your favorite band, TV show, sports team, city, recipe – really anything – and izik will produce an image-rich page filled with quality content for you to explore.Content on izik is presented in various categories to allow for minimal typing and to provide context to results. Look up “Jennifer Lopez” and see results under the categories of Lyrics, Gossip, and Perfume. Search for “Lincoln” and see not only movie times, but also sites organized under Reviews, History, and Cars — all accessible with a tap of your fingertip.

1. Madden NFL 12 | 99 cents
Version 1.0.8 brought a Touchdown Challenge that allows users to lead their offense on a two-minute drive for the game winning touchdown. It also included multiplayer mode for challenging a friend via local Bluetooth and improved gameplay.

2. Calendars by Readdle – Universal | $6.99
Version 3.5.1 fixed displaying times in some countries and the ability to create new events with default reminders. The update also brought stability improvements.

3. NexStop -NYC Subway| $1.99
Version 2.3 added support for realtime arrival times on “the 1,2,3,4,5,6 lines and Grand Central Shuttle”, and the app updated with the latest MTA schedule data and maps.

The brains behind the popular Angry Birds Franchise, as well as Bad Piggies and Amazing Alex, just announced via a blog post that Angry Birds saw over 30 million downloads during Christmas week—with 8 million of them being on Christmas Day alone:

Version 5.70 is now live and features the ability to play with non-Facebook-connected users. The changelog also includes enhanced support for iPhone 5 and the opportunity to post challenges to Facebook friends’ walls. The usual, yet unspecified, bug fixes and improvements are also present.

2. Snapseed – Universal | Free
This popular Google-owned photo app pushed out version 1.5.1, but the update only features a fixed issue in which opening images from camera roll could cause a crash, general bug fixes, and improvements.

3. Scribblenauts Remix – Universal | 99 cents
Version 2.7 landed yesterday and brought the ability to revert back to the original playground and icon. The changelog also boasts minor bug fixes.

The countdown is on.

It’s New Year’s Eve and folks are either getting ready to go out and party or assembling a junk food fest to sit on the couch and gorge the night away, but it’s guaranteed that almost everyone will have their eyes locked on Time Square’s Ball when the clock strikes midnight. Instead of watching this year’s countdown on television, however, just use an iPhone.

The Times Square Official New Year’s Eve Ball App is the official app to celebrate New Year’s Eve live from New York City, as the app’s description indicates, and it’s free. The main features include the ability to watch the co-hosted official show live, opening ceremonies, musical performances, celebrity appearances, hourly countdowns, and the midnight Ball Drop.

Users can also submit images and then vote on friends’ photos to possibly be selected for display on the Toshiba Vision Screen beneath the New Year’s Eve Ball, and they have access to tidbits related to history, news, weather, photos, map, and event schedule. New tethering app:

Yet another App Store developer has managed to sneak an app with hidden tethering functionality into the App Store. We covered an app that did this in August, and this new application uses a similar process to enable tethering.

The new application is called FlashArmyKnife, and it costs $1.99 on the App Store. For those unfamiliar, these apps with hidden tethering allow you to use your existing iPhone internet data service (with no additional cost) to connect your Mac or PC to the internet. We tested the application with a Mac and it worked as advertised. The developer has not provided a specific tutorial video for PC users, but there is a PC tutorial video for the similar tethering application in our August article. That article also includes more general troubleshooting tips.

Because the application’s tethering functionality is an “easter-egg” – and was hidden from Apple’s app review team – it will likely be removed soon.

Some users have experienced some issues, and making sure that turning off proxies on your computer following setup and entering the correct static IP and socks information (the static HTTP is 6667 and SOCKS is 6668) seems to fix the most common problems.

MapChoice | $0.99: A new app just released on the App Store provides you with access to both Apple’s new Maps and Google Maps in a single app. Your position will transfer from one map to the other, and it also includes StreetView and Foursquare integration.

MapChoice gives you a choice between old and new maps. You can also view Street View and search using FourSquare.

1. Karateka | $2.99: Jordan Mechner, creator of the popular Prince of Persia franchise, and developer of the original fighter classic “Karateka” for the Apple II, is today bringing an HD remake of the game to iOS. Bolt Creative just launched the 47th and “final-ish” content update for its episodic microgame app. The update brought “Episode 47: Apocalypse, Ow!” to users, access to the Apocalypse Temple’s Closet Room, and a strange Pygmy named Tom. Bolt Creative teased Episode 47 on it’s blog last friday, and it announced the new episode launch today:

The final conflict has begun. The answers to the Temple are being unleashed, and they don’t bode well for the Pygmies until they solve the ultimate puzzle and save their world.

So check out this very final-ish update (after all the apocalypse is in two days)  for Pocket God, as we get “The Runs” ready for unleashing next year!

Static just landed on the App Store today and tracks how well users are doing in their favorite social channels (i.e., Twitter, Instagram, Analytics, Dribbble, and GitHub). The app’s description gives the following summary: “Just added an Instagram photo? Just published a blog post? How much traffic did you get as a result? The app also lets you watch any of your Amazon collection of paid videos, buy videos, and allows you to store for offline viewing as well. Great for the holidays! More info here.

Videos you’ve purchased or rented with Amazon Instant Video will show up instantly on your Apple device once you download and sign into the app. Amazon Prime members can stream titles from the entire Prime Instant Video library.

You can never be too safe with your personal information on the internet. Passwords get cracked, databases get stolen, and web services sometimes ignore good security practices when storing your login information. Most people will tell you that you need to use a strong password on every website you use, and to use a different password on each site. Remembering all of those passwords and usernames can be a hassle though.

Up until September of 2011, I used the same password, or a variation of it, on nearly every website I used. One day I realized that was pretty stupid. After a service I used had been hacked and thousands of passwords had been stolen (thankfully mine was not included), I decided it was time to get smart with my passwords. I purchased 1Password at the recommendation of several users that I knew and have not looked back since.

I initially imagined it would be difficult to deal with a browser plugin and an iPhone app for storing all of my login info, but it proved to be much easier than I thought. In fact, it was so easy that I started recommending it to everyone I know.

Today, 1Password for iOS has received a complete overhaul. The update is pricey, but is it worth the money? Dive into the full review after the break to find out.

Square Register version 2.5: Square is rolling out Passbook compatible gift cards for local businesses that users of the Square Wallet iPhone app can purchase and share with friends.
