In the final week of my series of looking at some of the critical decisions that Apple has made in the design of its enterprise programs, I want to explore how Apple implemented mobile device management, and why it strikes the balance of not interfering with employees doing their jobs while giving IT the controls they need to secure employees’ devices.

As we continue with our series on Apple’s enterprise security design, I want to look at the Endpoint Security framework. While it’s only a couple of years old, I believe it’s a crucial part of Apple’s enterprise “pitch” in the future.

Apple @ Work: FileVault 2 is so good, there’s no reason for IT departments not to use it

Apple’s design for enterprise security strategy has done a lot to quell the frustration with enterprise security. When Apple built the kextless security endpoint, it was saying that employee experience matters. One of the reasons people have always hated their work computers is because they were a pain to use. Truthfully, many Windows environments have so much “bloatware” added to protect the employee from installing things they shouldn’t and verifying compliance that the employees have trouble doing their job. Apple took a different approach with how it implemented security and how it built its MDM protocol. Over the next three weeks, I will take an in-depth look at three of them.

I’ve been using iPads in the workplace since the release of the very first one. I managed iPads when the iPhone Configuration Utility was the only way to set them up for schools and businesses. I’ve used every major version of Apple Configurator to deploy iPads. I am very aware of where the iPad falls apart as a daily driver and where it falls apart. After spending a long weekend with just an iPad running iPadOS 15, my hopes are renewed for the device and multitasking.

Apple @ Work: Prevent employees from upgrading to the iOS 15 and macOS Monterey public betas through your MDM

macOS Monterey Apple Silicon Mac

Apple’s public betas for iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey have been available for the past few weeks. While there is a lot of excitement around them for business and personal reasons alike, there is also a lot to consider for IT departments when employees want to upgrade before they’ve had time to verify and rectify any compatibility issues. So let’s look at how IT departments can limit employees upgrading to the beta versions of Apple’s next-generation operations system.

Apple @ Work: Streamline remote support with the free SupportApp from Root3

SupportApp

macOS is a fantastic operating system for remote workers. It’s easy to maintain, very secure, and easy to use. There are times when things go wrong, though. When calling into your company’s IT department, getting them the information they need to diagnose the problem is crucial. I recently came across an app that needs to become a standard for macOS in every enterprise called SupportApp.

Apple @ Work: Camo uses your iPhone to transform your Mac’s low-quality webcam

Camo for Mac

One of the most glaring faults of Apple’s laptop line is the built-in webcams. Apple looks to finally be moving to 1080 with the newest iMac and its FaceTime HD camera, but that doesn’t help anyone with a current Mac. We’ve all spent way too much time over the past 14 months in Zoom meetings, so in hindsight, it would have been great to see Apple upgrade the built-in FaceTime cameras years ago, but they didn’t. In its absence, many people have taken to upgrading to an external option like the Logitech StreamCam and Papalook PA930. What if there was another option that you likely already own? Let’s look at Camo, an app to use your iPhone as your Mac webcam.

Apple @ Work: WWDC 2021 wishlist for Apple device management in the enterprise and K-12

Apple At Work

One of the most exciting weeks of the year for us in the Apple ecosystem is almost here. Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference kicks off next week. Although it’s virtual once again, we’re all looking forward to an exciting week of announcements as we get a look at what’s coming in iOS 15, iPadOS 15, macOS 13, and hopefully some announcements for tvOS. On the enterprise side, I am looking forward to the “What’s new with Apple device management” session that usually happens in the middle of the week. We’re coming up on a year since Apple’s acquisition of Fleetsmith, so it’s going to be interesting to see if we hear any news about it. Even that withstanding, here are some things I’d love to see from Apple in regards to enterprise and K–12 device management for this round of software upgrades.
