Purported photos of 5.5-inch ‘iPhone 6L’ show 2915mAh battery, wider display panel

Asia-based rumor site Apple Daily has acquired photos of what it claims are the next-generation iPhone, including the 5.5-inch model we’ve seen much less of in recent weeks. The two photos above show the larger device (with the purple interior) paired with a 4.7-inch version. The wider 5.5-inch model is to the right and the 4.7 display panel is on the left. While some may note that the part on the right does not appear much larger than the part on the left, it is possible that the image’s perspective does not highlight the size differentiation well.

The larger model, which Apple Daily claims will be called ‘iPhone 6L’ also sports a larger 2915mAh battery (seen below), compared to the 1810mAh in the 4.7-inch device and 1560 mAh in the iPhone 5s. The larger display area and form-factor allows Apple to squeeze a much larger battery pack into the phone, but it is currently unclear if this will mean stronger battery life. It’s uncertain if the larger display and more powerful chip rumored for the bigger phone will counterbalance the effects of the bigger battery pack…

The new iPhones are scheduled to debut at an Apple Media Event on September 9th, and Apple is also preparing new iPad models and a wearable fitness device for launch later this fall. In addition to larger displays, the new iPhones will include thinner and rounder designs as well as display covers built from sapphire crystal and a faster A8 chip.

Components for the upcoming 5.5-inch model’s display began leaking out from the Asia supply chain in June, and parts for the 4.7-inch model have been appearing on the web for months. Both models are now in mass production.

Part of the “iPhone 6L” display panel, which features a similar design to the 4.7-inch variant with more rounded corners, is shown off in one of the photos below. Other internal components, including more photos of the logic board for both handsets, are on display in the photos below:

    But, but, but… the 5.5″ iPhone 6 /can’t/ exist!

  2. o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

Yeah I don’t really believe those front panels. They are very different than the panel seen in the scratch test video, in that they have much larger bezels…

    • Tim Jr. - 10 years ago

Agreed.. yet they look exactly like the front panel from the Android iPhone 6 copy cat from China thats selling for around $200.. hmmmmm

  3. george264 - 10 years ago

I’d be really pissed off if I’m forced to the larger form factor for better specs. It’s one thing to do this for laptops, where 2 inches difference(from the Pro to the Air) isn’t much of a difference, and doesn’t matter in terms of wielding because it sits on my desk, this is a phone that sits in my hand. I don’t want to have to use my phone with two hands every time. 5-5.2 inches is where I set the bar. I never had a problem with the Evo 4G, the S3, the Moto X, the One M7&8, even the LG G2. Where I started with problems is the Note 2 and G3.

Edge to edge display and smaller chin and forehead can keep the width and height difference between the 5.5″ and 4.7″ inch to a minimum and not effect one handed usability much.

      • jonp1002014 - 10 years ago

But we pretty much know that hasn’t been implemented at this point.

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

Um no? That in no way makes sense. Why in the HELL would Apple make the 5.5″ bezels SIGNIFICANTLY smaller than the 4.7″? Why in the hell would they make a 4.7″ and 5.5″ if the 5.5″ is essentially the same size as the 4.7″ because it’s bezels are far smaller… Dear god.

      • taoprophet420 - 10 years ago

Why is it so crazy to see a 5.5″ model with a smaller chin and forehead like an htc one and and edge to she tapered display that is slightly larger or same size as the 4.7″? There is no way Apple will release a 5.5″ model with the same chin and forehead proportions as the previous iPhones. It will not be usable or practical.

Speaking of the htc one m8 why has nobody did a render of the back of the iPhone 6 using the antenna lines of the htc one? The lines on it look pretty slick not gaudy like on the iPhone 6.

Why would you have to use two hands Everytime you use your phone? I see galaxy 4 and 5 users text, scroll Instagram / Facebook, and the web all the time. People use one hand with larger phones all the time. I suppose there will be things you may not be able to do, but a larger screen doesn’t require you to use two hands for every single function.

    • Thuan M. Nguyen - 10 years ago

that’s is not necessary true, for example since the screen is bigger it require more power hence bigger battery and faster processor. Just because one phone have better spec that doesn’t mean the overall performance is better than the other. iPad air vs iPad mini, on paper the iPad air have faster processor chip but while compare the browser experience they are identical. Second with the 5.5 the device is bigger this also allow more space that can use for exam for for battery and more space to design the processor chip. Hope this help.

    iPhone 6 Air
    FTFY

    • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

Not a chance. Know why the iPad was renamed iPad Air? Hint: marketing, it had the same screen size, the difference that needed to be conveyed was the reduction in size and weight.

  5. spiralynth - 10 years ago

Look at that 5.5″ incher. It’s amazing! (That’s what she said).

But seriously, if it’s real, that “6L” is absolutely gorgeous: slim chin and forehead … and all around nice work on the bezels. I’d SRSLY be down with that and a 12″ iPad to replace my current iPhone 5 and iPad 4 getup.

  6. David Hsu (@devHsu) - 10 years ago

Just FYI, Apple Daily is not a “chinese rumor blog”, but one of the major Taiwanese press. Having “apple” in the name is just a coincidence.

  7. taoprophet420 - 10 years ago

This goes with the rumor I saw the other day that both screen sizes have basically the same height and width. The 5.5″ has a much smaller chin and forehead and edge to edge glass width. I can’t remember where I saw that rumor Thursday. This leaks seems to strongly confirm that.

    • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

Makes no sense at all sorry to say. You don’t make a 4.7″ and a 5.5″ if they’re essentially the same physical size. Most embarrassing thing I’ve ever heard.

      • taoprophet420 - 10 years ago

Sapphire screen, better camera, more powerful processor and still retaining usability with a slight increase in size is not embarisssing and not beyond the realm of possibilities.

There has been absolutely no rumors on a iPhone 6c. No rumors if they will make a plastic 4.7″ or put the internals of the 5s in an updated 5c. I don’t see Apple having 3 ranges of new iPhones unless they put the internals of th 5s in the 6c. I more likely seeing Apple keeping an 8 gb 5s as th entry model.

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

Hahah no. Apple would make the 4.7″ and 5.5″ have identical bezels, thus one would actually be smaller than the other, if that’s not obvious then I don’t know what to say. Like Apple would release a 4.7″ if the 5.5″ were essentially the same physical size. Lol

      • latinoboyboy - 10 years ago

The embarrassing thing is your comment….. the 5.5″ iPhone having slimmer bezels and the 4.7″ not having them is a great idea. Makes both handsets comfortable to hold. People don’t buy phablets because they’re bigger overall, they buy them because the SCREEN is bigger. If they’d let me choose between a Galaxy Note 3 and an LG G3 (not that I would choose either, I prefer iOS though they are both great phones) I would go with the G3. They both have huge displays but the G3 has a less overall footprint.

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

God damn you people are dumb. Yes let’s make the 5.5″ bezels smaller than the 4.7″ and let the devices be totally different screen size, but the exact same physical size. Please god help these people.

  8. aznair - 10 years ago

Am I missing something here because that purple thing just looks like the back side of the 4.7 panel…

    • hansfranz28 - 10 years ago

absolutely right.. the hole of the home button is larger on the right (i doubt they would increase this on a 5.5), so the right one must be closer to the camera..

  9. I made a video on my expectations for the iPhone 6 earlier this year, and I said they would name the 5.5inch iPhone, the iPhone 6L. Proof: http://youtu.be/itjrD4ohY3U?t=2m31s at 2:31mins into the video and uploaded on 20th April 2014, well before any naming rumours started to appear.
All that aside, it make sense for ‘L’ to be the naming difference between the two and also great to see a near 3000mAh in a ridiculously thin device.

    • Inaba-kun (@Inaba_kun) - 10 years ago

Well done. Would you like a gold star and a pat on the back?

    • Lee (@leemahi) - 10 years ago

Pretty cool vid. It’s amazing how much iPhone 6 leakage is coming out of the factories. I’m sure people join foxcon just to steal components and sell them to people like Sonny Dickison. L is the best way to name their new phones, but there is no way I myself could have thought of that. Subscribed!

  10. Frédéric Corbeau - 10 years ago

Lol, it’s not 4.7 at left and 5.5 at right, but two 5.5 ! (front and behind).

  11. Nycko Heimberg - 10 years ago

    The competitors can put +3000mAh in their 5 “. (xperia Z1 – Z2 ….)
    It is not great.
For the model 5.5″ the borders of the Top and the bottom risk to give the impression of possessing a 6 ” phone…..

    • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

Most idiotic statement of all time maybe. Risk giving the impression of a larger display? LOL why in the hell is that a problem? You WANT as much display taking up the front as possible, thus you have a smaller physical device in your hands…

      • Nycko Heimberg - 10 years ago

Nop ! The Phone is Larger, but screen is Smaller…..
iPhone 6 with 5.5inch is larger than Galaxy Note with 5.7 inch

      • Nycko Heimberg - 10 years ago

And the iPhone 6 with 4.7 inch is larger Than Galaxy Alpha with a Smaller battery too …….

  12. robinlmp - 10 years ago

Those are not two different display panels. It’s just the front view (left) and back view (right). It’s not that hard to figure that out clearly from looking vaguely carefully at the photo. Hard to say what size they are though

  13. Bruno Fernandes (@Linkb8) - 10 years ago

People are going to complain they don’t have a wall screen option available. :) They should probably keep the current screen size and offer the 5.5, more significant difference. Not sure we need the 4.7″ option if it means getting rid of the iPhone 5’s form factor.

    • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

Nope I want 4.7″ not 5.5″ that’s like going from an iPod touch and skipping the iPad mini straight to the iPad Air. The iPad mini is good being in there.

  14. carmenia83 - 10 years ago

Those aren’t two different displays. That’s the back of the 4.7″. Am I missing something?

  15. Has anyone else noticed the chick who is holding the battery in the last pic, REALLY needs a touch up job on her nail polish???

  16. nonyabiness - 10 years ago

Manufacturing date: 03/2014. This is most likely an early prototype that won’t see the light of day. Sorry to burst your bubble.

  17. You guys are pretty dumb. That looks more like the back of a 4.7″ panel. Or they’re both 5.5″, but i don’t encourage that solution. They’re both the same size, one’s just flipped over. The bevel around doesn’t look any different than the 4.7″ component leaks that have been revealed already. Of course the display extends past the bevel underneath. You guys are starting to sound desperate. There has to be a publication out there that would put more effort into debunking these rumors rather than spread them.

    • robotmo33 - 10 years ago

YES! Finally someone who looks twice — the photo definitely shows the same panel from each side. Whether it’s 4.7 or 5.5 who knows. You could probably calculate it based on the home button size for scale.

  18. Christopher Chouputra - 10 years ago

If you look closely, the code on the back of the screen is the same between left and right image. So it seems to be they are both 4.7″ screen.

    • Totally agree. They’re both 4.7″. I wonder why we are not seeing, a flood of 5.5″ parts being leaked? Especially if they are suppose to be in mass production. I’m starting to wonder…

  19. 1,810mah battery is a fail for a 4.7″ iphone.

    • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

Except no have 0 knowledge as to any aspect of Apple’s engineering. They could improve energy efficiency in more ways than you can possibly imagine.

  20. CJ Sheets - 10 years ago

Photographed definitely looks like the smaller 4.7-inch. Unless that man has giant hands (possible, but unlikely.) You can clearly see the front and back of the same size panel, with a box of panels sealed in plastic under them.

  21. CJ Sheets - 10 years ago

I did a little photoshop for comparison. In the first image (left) I have the glass panel held by Marques Brownlee overlaid on the leaked image above. I only made adjustments to the perspective, and rotation. The x and y scale values were constrained so they would keep the right proportion.

As you can see the left and right bezels are thinner on the Marques’ panel, with the new leaked panel showing through. However, in the center image I dropped the opacity to 45% you can clearly see the camera hole, speaker grill and home button line up perfectly.

(The image on the right is the original image.)

  22. Sometimes i wonder if you guys post this trash purposely knowing it’s wrong just to incite an argument. The Frames in this photo look just like these 4.7″ panels: http://www.cultofmac.com/290587/new-photos-highlight-front-panel-4-7-inch-iphone-6/
