Earlier this year, I had a chance to use the SmartWings shades that were designed to work with HomeKit. Apple makes a lot of tools for IT teams when it comes to managing iPads, iPhones, and Macs. Apple Configurator is a fantastic tool that acts as a Swiss army knife of sorts when it comes to doing tasks locally on iPhones and iPads when paired with a Mac. That doesn’t mean there isn’t room for innovation, though. I recently came across a tool that could be incredibly useful in the right circumstances: Telepod.

I’ve been using Umbrel at home for the last year and a half. Previously, I used a Raspberry Pi 4 to power my Umbrel server, but I recently upgraded to the new Umbrel Home, which includes everything prebuilt and ready to go. 2023 has been the year when I’ve really been thinking hard about where my data is, which companies have access to it, and how I can better control my costs. Apple Business Essentials is Apple’s solution for businesses not quite ready for a full-fledged device management solution but would likely stick to “unmanaged” devices otherwise. I’ve said from the beginning of the release: Apple’s competitor for business essentials is unmanaged and devices that are not in compliance. Recently, CDW announced it would begin reselling Apple Business Essentials as well. For a limited time, they’re even offering two months for free.

Matter continues to be the 2023 theme as various smart home manufacturers continue to release supported products. Aqara has long been one of my go-to smart home vendors when you want a low-cost item that supports the latest technology. A prime example of the level of products that Aqara produces is the new U100 door lock that supports Home Key. It’s such a fantastic product at a low cost. Today, they’re delivering the new Aqara T1 Light Strip that has quickly become of my favorite light strip products on the market.

I’ve said multiple times how I think Google’s first-party hardware strategy is something Apple should be copying. Apple debuted physical security key support with iOS 16.3 and macOS 13.2 and the feature works great with iPhone, iPad, Mac, and the web. This feature is designed for those who want another layer of protection against targeted attacks such as phishing or social engineering scams. Without a doubt, Home Key is my favorite new HomeKit feature in a couple of years. The ability to lock and unlock your door with a tap of your iPhone or Apple Watch has become second nature to me day to day. Both the Level Lock+ and the Aqara Smart Lock U100 are great options for implementing it in your home, but after months of usage, I’ve realized that it’s missing one single feature: Home Key sharing.

When Managed Apple IDs were first released, I was highly critical of them. They were hard to create. They were hard to manage. To be frank, they were almost pointless as well. It’s a good thing Apple didn’t listen to me, though. Over the year, Apple has continued to add features to the Managed Apple ID ecosystem to make them easier to manage, but also more important.
