Bradley has worked at K-12 independent schools for much of the last 20 years, serving as the head of the information technology department and leading classroom technology integration. He’s well-versed in enterprise Wi-Fi, macOS and iOS system management, school technology, and SaaS tools.
Abobe, the maker of my favorite Homekit compatible security system, has kicked off CES week with an exciting announcement. Through a partnership with Morse Micro and Xailient, Abode is announcing the world’s first Wi-Fi home security camera with AI-at-the-edge capabilities, a transmission range of over 1.5 miles, and best-in-class battery life performance. Read on to learn more about the Abode edge camera.
Last week, I ran through the Homey Pro, and I think it’s a fantastic device and ecosystem. Suppose you’ve gotten into where you want HomeKit to do more than it can functionally. In that case, I think it’s a great ecosystem to invest in as you can continue using all of your HomeKit devices, but now you can start to build an ecosystem outside of it. Today, Homey is announcing that the Homey Pro can now download a free software update that enables its built-in Thread radio. Through the update, Matter-over-Thread devices can be directly connected to Homey Pro without needing a secondary Thread Border Router.

In November, during AWS re: Invent, Amazon announced that Amazon WorkSpaces Thin Client is now available for enterprise production and use. Thin Client is not new as a concept, but it may be the next wave of enterprise computing. With Apple seeing rapid growth in the enterprise, is this something they should consider?
Smart home platforms are like the famous xkcd comic. Every new one is designed to become the “one ring,” but it usually becomes just another standard to follow. Homey Pro attempts to bridge that gap by acting as a hub for everything. It supports Matter, Zigbee, Z-Wave, and, coming in 2024, Thread.

We’re kicking off a new weekly series here on 9to5Mac that’ll aim to uncover the best, most unique, and most useful MagSafe and wireless charging accessories. Since the introduction of MagSafe with the iPhone 12, it’s been the primary way I’ve charged my iPhone. Even with the addition of USB-C with the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro, I’ve continued relying on MagSafe and other wireless chargers for daily and nightly charging. In a sense, it’s MagSafe or bust for me. To kick off the first edition of MagSafe Monday, I want to look at the Belkin Magnetic Wireless Car Charger.
I have become a massive fan of all things retro in recent years. I love the Tidbyt clock. I am ready for Apple to bring the iPod back. Old stuff is back. I’ve recently been testing a really fun Tidbyt alternative with HomeKit support. It doesn’t have nearly the same amount of third-party app options, but it’s still a great desk accessory. I am looking at the Yeelight Cube Clock Kit this week.

The most recent 14.2 firmware update brings another nice update for Google Camera users, including improved quality for first-generation Nest cameras.

Back in 2020, I chatted with Celona’sAndrew von Nagy about the use cases of private 5G networks in the enterprise. Just recently, they announced a new innovation that has major impacts for Apple IT managers.

While macOS continues to grow in popularity, there still are countless reasons to use virtualization. From testing Windows applications to playing Windows-only games to using Linux for daily development. For Parallels Desktop users, version 19.2 brings several new features that are pretty amazing for a mid-cycle release.
The ideal HomeKit accessories are ones that run themselves. Turning off and on lights from an app is a nice feature, but it’s a similar level of effort to using a light switch. The real magic is when you can “set it and forget it.” The THIRDREALITY Smart Color Night Light is the perfect example of this reality when you need a night light for a kid’s room or to light up a hallway/stairwell at night. Once installed, you can turn on an automation and never think about it again.
Back in October, Spike released its new generative AI functionality. Just a few months later, it’s releasing some of the details around the service usage along with the time savings.

Back in October, Apple finally released an updated iMac. It was the first update since 2021, when Apple first transitioned the iMac line to Apple Silicon. The iMac has long been iconic for Apple’s lineup as it was symbolic of Steve Jobs’ return to Apple and the beginning of its current dominance in the marketplace. Without the iMac, there would likely be no iPhone. Although the iMac is considered a “consumer device,” it’s been very popular in business applications because of its self-contained design. That’s why the latest update has been somewhat perplexing to me.

Apple recently published a case study on The University of Kentucky’s Apple deployment, and I believe that it’s worth highlighting. In it, we find “PC-guy” Bill Adams looking at how he crunched the numbers and saw a great return on investment with iPad and Mac for the Wildcats. I believe this trend is a major shift that is happening in IT right now as staffing and total cost of ownership become more important than raw hardware costs.
As summer turns to fall, I am already starting to see retail stores slowly bring out some Christmas items, and there’s one thing that you need to have ready to go ahead of time – an outdoor smart plug. For outdoor Christmas decorations, Christmas trees, etc. – smart plugs that can handle moisture and cold weather are a must-have. Recently, Leviton delivered a new Matter-enabled smart plug that works perfectly with HomeKit.

With Apple’s fall release, we’re seeing Wi-Fi 6E continue to come to Apple’s product line. Outside of the MacBook Air, all of the Macs now have options for Wi-Fi 6E. On the iPhone, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max support Wi-Fi 6E. On the iPad, only the iPad Pro 11-inch (4th generation) or iPad Pro 12.9-inch (6th generation) support Wi-Fi 6E. Are we at a tipping point where it’s time to start considering Wi-Fi 6E deployments? What about Wi-Fi 7?
As families prepare for the Christmas season, outdoor lighting is certainly top of mind for my family, as I am sure it is for many of you. Outdoor lighting is a great way to light up the neighborhood and provide ambiance lightning. For outdoor lighting, it’s a prime way to eliminate the hassle of plugging things up at night and turning them off during the day. Govee recently released the Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights Pro, and it’s ideal for Christmas lighting as well as permanent porch installations.
