Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 & 3 now available for Mac

CODMW3-Press-iMac3

A few years after hitting consoles, Aspyr announced today that it’s bringing a couple of the most popular games from the Call of Duty franchise to Mac, including: Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 as well as all DLC for both titles.

The games aren’t available in the Mac App Store, but Aspyr is making them available through Steam and its own GameAgent online store today alongside all maps packs and other DLC. SteamPlay support means you’ll be able to pick up the title up once and play it on both Mac and PC.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 picks up immediately following the historic events of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, with players facing off against a new threat dedicated to bringing the world to the brink of collapse. And Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 continues the series’ epic storyline with even bigger and more explosive action.

While the release is already a few titles behind the console releases, it does bring Mac gamers some great new Call of Duty content including multiplayer for both games. The games are certainly an upgrade from the last COD release to hit the Mac: 2010’s Black Ops.

Both games feature:

  • Cinematic, action-packed single player campaigns
  • Cross-platform competitive multiplayer and cooperative online play
  • Multiple DLC Packs which add new maps and other great content to the multiplayer experience
  • Steam Works integration and Steam Play support
  • And more!

Microsoft announces 12-inch Surface Pro 3, wants to replace your iPad & MacBook

Site default logo image

iPad-Surface-event

Today during Microsoft’s Surface event in New York City, the company just unveiled its new 12-inch, Core i7 Surface Pro 3 tablet and it spent much of its presentation comparing it to the iPad and MacBook Air. Microsoft is pitching the 9.1mm thick tablet– the thinnest Intel Core product ever made– as the first true replacement for your iPad and laptop combination.

The announcement comes following rumors that Apple is at the very least testing similar sized tablets for future iPad models. Microsoft said Surface Pro 3 weighs just 800g and it made that point by comparing it to a 13-inch MacBook Air on stage (below):

MacBook-vs-Surface-3

During its comparison, Microsoft said that the Surface Pro 3’s 12-inch display would provide 6 percent more content on screen than on the MacBook Air’s 13-inch screen. The Surface Pro 3 has a 12-inch 2160-by-1440-pixel display and it moves to a 3:2 aspect ratio instead of 16:9 ratio used by previous Surface devices. Microsoft also has a new dock for the Surface Pro 3 that allows output to a 4K display.

We reported earlier this month that Apple is working on a new split-screen, multitasking feature for iPad similar to what Microsoft offers on Surface. Microsoft previously focused on attacking iPad in several marketing campaigns by highlighting the iPad’s inability to multitask with two apps side by side, in addition to its lack of Microsoft Office apps, which have since been released for iPad users in the App Store.

So what’s Microsoft’s new angle? The company spent most of its presentation today talking about the fact that consumers still have to decide between a laptop and an iPad or buying both:

Update: The iPad trade-in program is now available in Germany, according to a report from Macerkopf.de.

Last month we reported that Apple launched a new in-store iPad trade-in program on Earth Day in the US and Canada, and now the program has reportedly expanded to France. iPhoneaddict.fr reports that Apple confirmed the program has launched at Apple Stores in the country, which are currently accepting iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, and iPad mini for trade-in value towards a new iOS device. Like in the US and Canada, the program doesn’t allow customers to trade-in the current gen iPad Air or iPad mini with Retina display.

Pioneer demos its aftermarket CarPlay systems arriving in next few weeks (Video)

Site default logo image

After officially announcing its new CarPlay feature for connecting iOS devices to select in-car entertainment systems, Apple followed up with confirmation that we’d also see aftermarket products with support for the feature. Pioneer was one of the first to announce that the feature would arrive on a number of the in-car systems it sells, and today we’re getting our first look at the feature in action on the hardware.

Pioneer gave a few demos of CarPlay this week running on its aftermarket in-car systems, including the video above from MacWorld, and another from DigitalTrends. While both short reviews are fairly positive, there are reportedly a few issues that will hopefully be tweaked by the time CarPlay lands in vehicles later this year:

Carl Icahn buys another 2.8M AAPL shares bringing his stake in Apple to approx. $4.5B

Photo: Huffington Post

Photo: Huffington Post

Investor Carl Icahn revealed today that he has purchased another 2.8 million Apple shares bringing his total up to more than 7.5 million. That brings his stake in Apple up to approximately $4.5 billion from the $1 billion worth of Apple stock he reportedly owned last summer.

The news comes following Apple’s introduction of a $90 billion share buyback and a 7-to-1 stock split announced last month. Icahn, who had been pressuring Apple to increase value for shareholders in a number of open letters, meetings with CEO Tim Cook, and media interviews since first announcing his purchase of AAPL last year, said he was “extremely pleased” with Apple’s recent announcements.

Back in February, Icahn withdrew his proposal that would have seen shareholders vote on Apple increasing its buyback program by $50 billion. Apple’s new $90 billion share buyback is up from the $60 billion it announced in 2013.

Flappy Bird creator teases new game in screenshot

Flappy-Dong-Man-Building-Jumper-Game

Just a day after Flappy Bird creator Dong Nguyen told CNBC his hit iOS game would return to the App Store in August, today the developer is teasing a new game currently in development.

Despite reportedly confirming Flappy Bird would make a return, Nguyen’s tweet about his new game reads, “I am making a new game. So people can forget about Flappy Bird for a while.”

There aren’t any other details on the game or a timeframe for release, but Nguyen did provide the screenshot above which appears to show similar gameplay to Flappy Bird.

Apple likely allowing promo codes for in-app purchases through App Store Code Program

Real-Racing-in-app-promo-code

Up until now, Apple has limited promo codes on the App Store to app downloads and hasn’t allowed developers to offer codes for in-app purchases and Newsstand issues. However, as noted by 148apps, EA is currently offering promo codes that allow users of its Real Racing 3 iOS app to get an in-app purchase normally valued at $1.99.

In-app-promo-codeWhile users aren’t forced to enter a promo code manually in the App Store, visiting an EA website sends users to the App Store and automatically redeems the code for the in-app content. iOS also prompts users that have not yet installed the free Real Racing 3 app to do so in order to claim the in-app purchase code.

Apple’s developer documentation for promo codes currently states “Promo codes don’t work for In-App Purchase products, including Newsstand issues,” but it has unofficially supported workarounds in the past that developers have used to offer free in-app content for promotions.

It’s also a possibility that Apple is allowing the in-app purchase codes through its App Store Code Program that offers developers the ability to run special promotions. Apple recently detailed the program in a TechTalk:

Apple uses the program to let developers offer, for example, more than the usual 100 promo codes per app version and EA has used the program for several promotions in the past.

• Save your favorite episodes to keep them offline
• Episodes can now be automatically deleted after you play them

Facebook iOS app adds post previews & drafts, tests related content cards

Facebook-iOS-postFirst available for Android users, Facebook has just released an update to its iOS app that introduces the ability to create drafts of posts, preview posts before publishing and more.

With version 10.0, Facebook users can now create posts even when not connected to the internet or in airplane mode and save the drafts for posting later. As for previews of posts, Facebook notes that you can now “Review what your post will look like and choose whether to remove any suggested links before sharing what you’re reading, watching or listening to.”

The updated app also gets “Improvements to make News Feed load faster, especially on older phones and tablets.”

In addition to the updated Facebook iOS app, TechCrunch reports that Facebook is currently testing Google Now-like related info cards with a select group of users. The cards (pictured below) would be presented to users after posting (pictured below). Facebook described the feature:

“These cards can help you discover information about where you are or what to do next, or inspire conversations with your friends around you.  This feature respects all existing privacy settings, and the card will only show you information that you could already see elsewhere on Facebook. We wanted to make it easier for you to interact with your friends about the things you’re doing and the places you are visiting.”

Flappy Bird will return to App Store in August w/ multiplayer, won’t be as fun

flappy_bird_end-600x300

After removing the hit iOS game Flappy Bird from the App Store back in February, the developer confirmed today that the game will make a return in August.

Developer Dong Nguygen confirmed the return date today to CNBC’s Kelly Evans and also claimed that the game would be less addictive, which was originally the main reason he cited for removing the app earlier this year. In addition, the game will also apparently include a multiplayer when making its return to the store.

At its most popular, the original Flappy Bird game was reportedly making as much as $50,000 a day revenue. It didn’t take long for other developers to make clones of the game in order to capitalize on the game’s popularity and many of them remain in the App Store’s top charts for gaming.

With Dre & Iovine on board, Apple could become most powerful record label in the world

Site default logo image
Tim-Jim-and-Dre

Tim, Jim, and don’t forget about Dre

This won’t be the first time someone suggested Apple could start its own record label. But with Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, two music industry heavyweights that have built some of the world’s biggest record labels rumored to be getting creative roles at Apple, it’s interesting to imagine what influence Iovine and friends could have on Apple’s approach to content.

If Apple is ever going to move on from simply being a music distribution hub taking its 30 percent cut to a record label of sorts fostering, promoting, and investing more in artists, Iovine is as good as it gets. Having built Interscope Records, the label behind some of the biggest artists of the last 20 years from Dr. Dre to Lady Gaga, Iovine’s real expertise is building labels, growing artists and selling music. Iovine himself admits the streaming service and even the headphone business were always a way to get control back to the labels and empower the artists, and that seems to be his main focus. Hyper launches the first Made-for-iPhone/iPad USB flash drive w/ built-in Lightning connector

Site default logo image

iStick-MFi-cover

Hyper— we’ve reviewed some of its MacBook batteries and iPhone accessories in the past— is today announcing the first Made-For-iPhone/iPad/iPod touch (MFi) flash drive that includes a built-in Lightning connector. Unfortunately you can’t get your hands on one just yet, but you can preorder through a funding campaign the company just launched on Kickstarter.

Hyper told us it’s been working on the product for over two years and just recently got approval from Apple: “As expected, Apple had many concerns for iOS storage products like the iStick. We actually started MFi application for this product more than 2 years ago. It was definitely not an easy process but we managed to address all of Apple’s concerns and finally just got MFi approval.”

iPhone-trade-in-event-01

In line with our earlier report, Apple has just kicked off a big iPhone trade-in event at its U.S. retail stores that will see employees pushing upgrade offers for the iPhone 5s and 5c. We first reported on details of the event earlier this week noting Apple would add improved trade in options and significantly step up promotion of iPhone trade-ins during the initiative . Specifically, Apple has sent out a memo to Apple Store staff instructing them to push upgrades to iPhone 4 and 4s users with increased trade-in values. The company has also started contacting customers by email and promoting the event with new signage in its retail stores.

Latest Chrome build lets Mac users launch files in Chrome Web apps

Chrome-Finder-web-app

Google is experimenting with a new feature in the latest Canary build of Chrome that will allow Mac OS X users to open files from Finder directly in Chrome web apps running in the browser. As highlighted in the image above from Googler Francois Beaufort, that means you’ll be able to launch, for example, a text document in a Chrome web app like Text instead of using TextEdit, Word or another application installed natively on your Mac. Google is presumably hoping the feature will make using Chrome web apps a smoother experience when transitioning from the browser and back to local file management and native apps.

For now the feature is only available if specifically enabled (details here) in the Chrome Canary build, but there’s a good chance this will eventually make its way to the beta and public releases of Chrome for all Mac users.

Apple Store employees switching from iPod touch to iPhone 5s for EasyPay POS system

Site default logo image

Apple-EasyPay-iPhone5s-01

Apple is in the process of updating the iPod touch units used by Apple Store employees as a mobile point-of-sale system to the iPhone 5s, according to sources familiar with the roll out.

Apple first started using its iPod touch as an “EasyPay” system for employees in its retail stores back in 2009 and currently uses 4th gen iPod touch or previous models for staff. It uses a point-of-sale attachment for the iPod touch that adds a magnetic stripe reader, barcode scanning functionality, and more. It’s not clear the exact motivation behind Apple’s move to the iPhone after long using the iPod touch, but the device does provide a few advantages.
