AirPower iPhone XS AirPods 2

AirPower was Apple accessory first teased at the iPhone X/8 launch event in September 2017. It’s was a wireless (Qi-based) charging pad that was suppose to simultaneously charge an iPhone X, XR, XS, and XS Max, an Apple Watch and the second generation AirPods.

When the second generation AirPods were released in March 2019, the box mentioned AirPower compatibility, and also included a 2018 copyright. Indications are that these AirPods were ready last year, but the release was delayed in order to finish up the charging mat.

On March 29th, 2019, Apple officially canceled the AirPower charging mat.

There’s a wide range of third-party wireless charging pads on the market, including some which appear similar, but these cheat by having (or requiring you to add) a separate Apple Watch charger in a specific location on the pad. It will allow devices to be charged anywhere on the pad.

Bloomberg: Apple aims to launch AirPower mat by September, runs a ‘stripped down’ version of iOS

Apple’s AirPower charging mat was first announced in September alongside the announcement of the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, with an opaque ‘2018’ release timeframe. More than half way through, the product is yet to hit shelves. Bloomberg says that Apple had aimed to launch the accessory in June, but hit delays due to problems with overheating.

AirPower is much more complicated than a standard Qi charging mat. The report says the mat actually runs a stripped down version of iOS so it can manage power and complex circuitry, and communicate with the iOS devices, Apple Watch and AirPods that are laid on it.

Apple now supports wireless charging with the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, but it isn’t selling its own charging pad yet. Instead, Apple Stores offer charging pads that support the Qi standard from Belkin and Mophie, each priced at $59.99.

The company did preview AirPower which it will start selling sometime next year, but the official release date and price are still unknown. Now a Polish retailer has published an online listing for AirPower which could give us a clue about how much we’ll have to pay for the special charging pad.
