Tylt Energi Pro Backpack outdoors with girls

Backpacks have always been a source of frustration for me when carrying around my laptop and the various tools I need with me throughout my day. I don’t carry a ton with me at any given moment, but finding a bag that can carry and handle everything has been difficult.

Enter Tylt’s new Energi Pro Backpack. While not only being incredibly spacious, Tylt’s new backpack’s attention grabber is the fact that it includes an impressively large battery in the bag. Carrying everything you lug around is not only a breeze with the Energi Pro Backpack, but charging everything while you do so is god-send.

iPhone-connected Canary home monitoring system hits retail stores, plans international expansion

The Canary smart home monitoring system that started with a $100l Indiegogo goal and actually raised almost $2 million, is now available in retail stores for the first time, priced at $259.

Canary is a security camera that learns your living patterns, like when people leave and enter the home, and sends alerts to your iPhone when anything seems out of the ordinary. You can then view and listen remotely to ensure all is well.

Canary is now available in Best Buy, Home Depot and Verizon Wireless, and is also available on Amazon with free shipping. The company plans to make it available in other countries later this year.

The gadget for the person who has everything: the breath quality sensor

We know that health gadgets and apps are the new black, but you have to wonder whether things might be getting just a little out of hand when the latest one to appear on crowdfunding site Indiegogo is essentially a hi-tech way to determine whether your breath smells …

Ok, the Breathometer Mint is a little more than that, measuring your hydration level too, and the company behind it is keen to point out that the breath analysis can be an early pointer to risks to your teeth as well as your social standing.

Breath analysis specialists Breathometer says the device measures Hydrogen Sulfide, Methyl Mercapthan and Hydrogen Disulfide levels in parts per billion to determine whether you may have dental problems.

“Changes or trends in your breath quality can tell you a lot about whether your oral hygiene program is adequate, or if you need to do more,” says Charles Michael Yim, CEO of Breathometer. “Over time, low breath quality can be a signal that you need to visit your dentist or physician about other possible causes.”

Using the device couldn’t be simpler: place it in your mouth, wait a few seconds for it to analyse a sample of your breath and view the results on the accompanying iPhone app.

Intended to retail at $99, early birds can pre-order for $89, but note that delivery isn’t expected until August.

It’s not the first dental-related gadget we’ve seen – it’s almost a year to the day since the Kolibree connected toothbrush was announced (though we note that one is still ‘coming soon’).

Zolo, a new accessory maker, launches a crowdfunding campaign for modular cases, battery packs, and more

A new modular accessory maker called Zolo is launching a 30-day crowdfunding campaign today through Indiegogo to help launch their new product ecosystem. Zolo’s accessories include cases, portable battery packs, and smartphone cases for the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy S5.

What makes Zolo’s products different is the use of magnets in each accessory (the company says these magnets do no harm your devices). All of Zolo’s accessories snap together to eliminate having to deal with loose cables and dangling battery packs. The company even offers cable clips to bring your existing cables into the Zolo ecosystem.

Early bird funding prices for Zolo’s products range from $13 to $35 with the power and protection pack shown above going for just $18 (not a bad price for a battery pack, case, charging cable, and cable clips). Zolo says their strategy for building a successful accessory ecosystem includes shipping products directly to consumers and skipping the markup required by retailers. Check out details for the power and protection pack as well as a video demo below and visit Zolo’s site and Indiegogo to help fund the campaign…

Woodster iMac stand packs in 2 USB ports in a solid chunk of birch or oak

While most accessory makers do their best to get a bead blasted aluminium finish to match the design of the Apple products they are made for, the Woodster stand and USB hub for iMac clearly takes a different approach. The dock will be available in three different types of wood— Birch, Oak, and Beech tree multiplex— and comes in three heights with or without two USB 3.0 ports. The creators plan to ship the stand by March if they can raise €6,000 in funding through an Indiegogo campaign. You can preorder the Woodster through the funding campaign starting at €99 and companies might be interested in customized, branded packs of 6 starting at €450.

As the success stories keep piling up, so do the number of projects filling up crowdfunding websites with, among other things, neat hardware- and software-related products. Some projects, like Pebble, gain thousands of supporters as well as millions of dollars in funding (and end up at Best Buy’s retail stores). Other projects flop and don’t reach their necessary funding amount.

Rather than make you sift through all of these projects, we’re rounding up the best or most notable projects from around the web and delivering them to you in a simple roundup.

If there’s a project that you’ve backed – or even a project that you founded – be sure to leave a link below so it can be considered for the next roundup.

  • The Tastiest Cord Solution: Cord Taco, Cordito, Cordlupa (Kickstarter project) – It’s probably not the best idea to actually eat these cord organizers. However, the unique designs allow you to beautifully wrap up your headphones, USB cords, and Mac charging block in style. Just three days into it, this campaign is half way to meeting its $15,000 goal. 925ff1db7b817ee0eb883193691dd012_large expand full story

  • Qooqi for your cables (Kickstarter project) – All of my cables like to fall off my desk and into oblivion. I’ve tried small, adhesive cord holders in the past, but usually the cords tug on the holder so much that peel off. Qooqi, on the other hand, uses what they call “nano pad tad technology” which sounds a lot like the microsuction of my favorite NanoTek Stand dock.I personally backed this project and it has already exceeded its $10k goal. Expect the Qooqi to ship out in December. expand full story

Indiegogo project ‘Kreyos Meteor’ claims to be iPhone compatible voice, gesture-controlled smartwatch

Apple’s iWatch is rumored to be launching later this year (or a little over a year from now, depending on who you ask), but an Indiegogo project called the Meteor by Kreyos promises an iPhone-comptatible watch that could give Apple’s hypothetical device—as well as other existing smart watches already on the market—some intriguing competition.

Breathometer-device-and-appAvailable to preorder through a new project on crowd funding site Indiegogo, Breathometer, Inc. today announced what it claims is the “World’s First Smartphone Breathalyzer”. While we have seen other solutions in the past, the Breathometer is a smaller, thumb drive sized device that connects to your iPhone’s 3.5mm audio jack and provides reliable, real-time blood alcohol readings.

The company said it already has a working prototype but is counting on raising its $25,000 funding goal in order to kick the Breathometer into full production. It also plans to implement additional features in a companion app before the Breathometer’s launch, such as a “a push of a button cab service.”

Breathometer is the next generation breathalyzer that provides an accurate BAC measurement that enables smarter decisions… By using Breathometer, you now have the ability to help prevent accidents. We’re also building some other amazing features like a push of a button cab service.

Early bird pledgers will be able to get a Breathometer when it ships (by January 2014) for just $20, while bids ranging from $50 to $500 will get you a unit as early as July of this year in addition to some bonus gifts.

CEO and founder of Breathometer had this to say about the announcement: expand full story
