iOS 9 CarPlay

CarPlay in iOS 9 adds several new features including wireless connectivity over wired Lightning connections, but current cars don’t yet support the new protocol that offers the better experience. None of the new aftermarket displays from Pioneer, JBL, and others from this year support wireless CarPlay, and automakers like Ford and Chevy that are rolling out CarPlay support this year are focusing first on the wired experience and not talking about wireless yet.

CarPlay partner Volkswagen, however, apparently did plan to demonstrate their integration of wireless CarPlay with their concept infotainment system, but pulled the demo from CES this year at Apple’s request, Car and Driver reports:

carplay-appleAfter just over a year at Apple, former Mercedes R&D chief Johann Jungwirth left the company earlier this month to join Volkswagen AG as the new ‘Head of Digital Transformation’. Even though his official title at Apple was “Director of Mac Systems Engineering”, the executive was rumored to be working on the company’s electric car codenamed “Project Titan” due to his extensive automotive background and the timing of the hire, which was followed by several other engineering hires with experience in the auto industry. expand full story

Volkswagen debuts Apple Watch app that alerts you when your teens speed and more

Volkswagen announced its new Apple Watch application today that will allow users to control their VW Car-Net-enabled vehicles remotely from their wrists (via TechCrunch). Functions like door locks and fuel/charge level indicators will be available directly in the app. Drivers can even get directions from their current location to their parked car.

There will also be new setting that allows parents to set speed limits for their teen drivers. When that limit is crossed, Volkswagen says, the parent will get a notification on their watch alerting them to the fact. Parents can opt to set up geographic boundaries as well, and be alerted when their teens drive outside the designated area.

Volkswagen did not provide a specific availability date. You can read VW’s full press release below. Last week a similar app was shown off for controlling Tesla’s Model S.

Looks like Bentley isn’t the only one unveiling some new Apple-related features at this year’s International Motor Show in Frankfurt. Auto-part and equipment supplier Valeo was showing off a variation of their Automatic Park4U system, this time remotely parking a Volkswagen using an iPhone.

Equipped with only the ability to brake and accelerate, CNET explains a “Valeo representative stood outside the car, a Volkswagen Sharan, and parked it merely by using an iPhone app.” We dug up the video above posted by Valeo that shows the iPhone app in action towards the end.
