iOS 8.3 beta 4 (developers)

Apple has just seeded the latest beta of iOS 8.3 to its public beta users. The first beta was sent out just under two weeks ago. The build is also available over-the-air to developers, making it the fourth beta for those users. It’s also available on the iOS developer center.

Along with the new iOS beta comes a new Xcode beta. The Xcode 6.3 beta comes with a build number of 6D554n and includes support for Swift 1.2. A beta update for the third-generation Apple TV has also been pushed out.

Apple re-releases Xcode 6 beta 6, solves issues discovered by developers in new build

Screen Shot 2014-08-18 at 9.09.04 PM

Earlier today Apple released the sixth developer preview of OS X Yosemite, along with a new beta version of its Xcode developer tool. However, after users found that the new Xcode beta was unusable, Apple pulled it from the developer website.

[tweet https://twitter.com/alvarofr_/status/501435923322916864 align=’center’]

It seems the issues have now been rectified, as the beta is once again available on Apple’s developer site with a version number indicating that it is two builds newer than the one released this morning.

[tweet https://twitter.com/iadam1n/status/501528399001960448 align=’center’]

The Xcode beta includes development tools for Mac and iOS, including Apple’s new Swift programming language which was debuted at WWDC earlier this year. In a rare move for the company, Apple has released the beta version of Xcode 6 to anyone who wants it, regardless of whether they have a paid developer account or not.

You can grab the Xcode beta from Apple’s website.

OS X Yosemite introduces iMessage screen sharing, FaceTime Audio conference calls with iOS 8

Site default logo image

screen-shot-2014-06-02-at-12-17-43-pm

Apple has made a few new changes to its first-party voice and text services in the newest versions of its mobile and desktop operating systems. Some users are reporting that iOS 8 now features the ability to create conference FaceTime Audio calls. Previously FaceTime audio calls could only be made from one user to another, but now you can add additional users to a call in progress.

OS X Yosemite sports a new addition to its iMessage capabilities. While screen sharing has always been possible over alternative services like AIM, Apple now allows you to use the built-in screen sharing feature in the Messages app over an iMessage account. Unfortunately the feature seems to be broken in the first Yosemite beta, but it is expected to be functional by the time the software ships.

Windows Phone 8.1 update lets users add Passbook cards to Microsoft Wallet

Windows-Phone-8-1-passbook

WPcentral notes that the upcoming Windows Phone 8.1 update introduces support for Apple’s Passbook iOS app, allowing users to load coupons, tickets, boarding passes, etc, designed for Passbook into the Microsoft Wallet app.

While the Microsoft Wallet app will be able to load the various coupons and loyalty cards usually reserved for Passbook, it’s still a little unclear exactly what’s going on behind the scenes. Microsoft appears to be allowing users to download the Passbook files and rendering its own card for Microsoft Wallet, but the report speculates Windows Phone won’t be able to tap into the push notifications Apple’s uses to update cards like on iOS.

There seems to be some confusion over whether or not Mircosoft is officially supporting Passbook in one way or another, but with a developer preview of Windows Phone 8.1 rolling out today, I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about this soon.

Google-Apache Cordova-Chrome

After letting us know last month that it was getting ready to release a toolkit to let developers easily bring their Chrome web apps to iOS and Android, today Google released a developer preview of the tool. In its blog post, Google explains the tool is based on open-source framework Apache Cordova, which allows devs to build native apps for iOS and Android using CSS, HTML, and Javascript. It’s also making a lot of its own core Chrome APIs available to developers through the preview. It essentially means devs will be able to bring their Chrome web apps to the App Store and Google Play, but it will also let them build new cross platform apps in CSS, HTML, and Javascript. Google explained how it works:

Parallels 8 for Mac updated with experimental support for OS X Mavericks

Site default logo image

Mavericks as Guest OS

Parallels announced an update to Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac today that introduces experimental support for OS X Mavericks. That means developers with access to Mavericks will be able to run Parallels Desktop 8 on the OS and also install the OS X 10.9 preview in a virtual machine.

The company has an article available to walk devs through getting Desktop 8 for Mac running on Mavericks and another outlining best practices for installing it as a virtual machine. While you can’t yet install Mavericks into a blank virtual machine, you will be able to update an existing OS X install to the developer preview. Those error messages some users were getting when attempting to run Mavericks on Parallels Desktop 8 should also be taken care of with the latest build.

Parallels hinted more news about Mavericks and its integration with Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac is on the way and is answering questions in its forums here and here.

Good news if you don’t yet own a copy: Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac is currently 25% for a limited time.
