One of the headline features of macOS Venture and iOS 16 was a few much-needed enhancements to Apple’s Mail app. I’ve long criticized the app for some serious upgrades as stagnant and much overdue; I even argued in the past that Apple developed a Mail.app Pro and rename the current app Mail.app Lite to keep the needs of business users separate from pro users. With Apple’s fall upgrades, Scheduled Send is finally built into macOS and iOS’s Mail app, but with a caveat that IT administrators will appreciate. Continue reading to learn more about schedule email send in iOS 16 and macOS Ventura.

Apple @ Work: Endpoint Security API is another reason why Apple is growing in the enterprise

Apple Endpoint Security API

In 2004, I listened to a presentation from the IT Director of the internet service provider I was doing call center technical support for, and he made a comment that has stuck with me to do this day: Security is easy if you don’t care about the end-user experience. Finding the balance between security and usability is the true goal. I’d argue that usability and experience is the primary way Apple has distinguished itself in the enterprise and why it continues to grow to this day. A great example of Apple balancing security and usability is its Endpoint Security API.

HomeKit Weekly: Fibaro Multi-Sensor is your swiss army knife for HomeKit automations

Fibaro Multi Sensor

A whole subset of HomeKit device categories often goes under notice. When you think about smart home devices, you will generally think about cameras, lights, speakers, or a switch. The real genius of a smart home is when things can happen without you even thinking about them. There’s a device that I recently picked up that I think might end up being one of my favorite HomeKit devices. This week, I am looking at the Fibaro Multi-Sensor Motion Sensor for HomeKit

One thing that became perfectly clear in the past few years with Apple’s integrations at work is Active Directory binding is dead, and integration with Identity Providers is the future. While it’s not something I would have ever predicted a decade ago, Apple’s willingness to create APIs for other companies to manage the Mac login experience shows the company understands its role in the enterprise. This week, I want to look at why Apple’s enterprise expansion is going to continue to mature as it focuses on deep integration with other platforms.

HomeKit Weekly: SwitchBot releases its first HomeKit product with the SwitchBot Plug Mini

SwitchBot Plug Mini

For those new to smart home automation, there’s no easier way to get started than with a smart outlet adaptor. When I got my first smart home product back in 2013, a Belkin Wemo for my Christmas tree was the first product I used. Today, smart outlets have remained the best use case for novice uses, but they’ve gotten more reliable and much smaller. I recently tried out the brand-new SwitchBot Plug Mini with HomeKit support.

When the lockdowns happened in 2020, schools rushed to virtual options to maintain some semblance of “business as usual.” There were unintended consequences, and that was to be expected. However, one company’s unique solution became integral to Irvine Valley College’s virtual instruction, and it continues today. This week, I want to look at Otter and its benefits for education and business environments with assistive technology.

HomeKit Weekly: Eve Cam can double as an outdoor camera through a window thanks to flexible mounting options

In our temporary living situation, I am without my normal HomeKit setup, so I’ve had to rethink what HomeKit products I want to reconfigure. I took this time as an opportunity to completely delete my HomeKit Home setup so I can start fresh in my new house. As someone that grew up in the Windows XP era where you reinstalled the OS once a year, old habits are hard to break. As I was culling the large box of all my HomeKit products, I came across my trusty Eve Cam, and I realized it had a flexible use case I hadn’t considered until now.

ESR HaloLock with CryoBoost solves the biggest problem with MagSafe in the car: overheating

ESR HaloLock Car Charger

After the initial announcement of MagSafe, I didn’t think it would be something I’d use that often. After nearly two years of MagSafe, I can’t remember the last time I used a Lightning port on my iPhone. MagSafe is the single way I charge my iPhone now. I’ve used multiple car chargers compatible with MagSafe, but I’ve found one that solves the single problem of charging your phone at full speed while keeping it cool: The ESR HaloLock with CryoBoost.

There’s always been a balance between patching macOS and iOS devices quickly when Apple releases software updates with trying to avoid interrupting a user when they’re working. With iOS 16 and macOS Ventura, Apple is enabling a new technology that will enable IT administrators to quickly patch machines outside of the normal software update schedule. This week for Apple @ Work, I want to look at Apple’s Rapid Security Response enhancements in iOS 16 and macOS Ventura.

Aqara introduces a retrofit HomeKit solution to automate traditional curtains

Aqara Curtain Driver E1

A few months ago, I reviewed Switchbot’s curtain automation product, and I came away pretty impressed. The only downside for HomeKit access is it did require using HOOBS or keeping a Homebridge server up and running. While this is a simple process, it’s better to have a native HomeKit product when possible. Today, Aqara is bringing that to the market with the Aqara Curtain Driver E1.

In the podcast I did from 2012 to 2017 with Fraser Speirs, I became very focused on identity becoming a central part of the IT management experience. This time period was during the continued transition from on-prem servers and services into SaaS becoming the default. Apple’s vision for single sign-on in the enterprise took a continued march with WWDC 2022, so let’s look at what was announced regarding SSO, IDP and Apple’s identity vision for the enterprise
