In 2004, I listened to a presentation from the IT Director of the internet service provider I was doing call center technical support for, and he made a comment that has stuck with me to do this day: Security is easy if you don’t care about the end-user experience. Finding the balance between security and usability is the true goal. I’d argue that usability and experience is the primary way Apple has distinguished itself in the enterprise and why it continues to grow to this day. A great example of Apple balancing security and usability is its Endpoint Security API.

A whole subset of HomeKit device categories often goes under notice. When you think about smart home devices, you will generally think about cameras, lights, speakers, or a switch. The real genius of a smart home is when things can happen without you even thinking about them. There’s a device that I recently picked up that I think might end up being one of my favorite HomeKit devices. This week, I am looking at the Fibaro Multi-Sensor Motion Sensor for HomeKit

One thing that became perfectly clear in the past few years with Apple’s integrations at work is Active Directory binding is dead, and integration with Identity Providers is the future. While it’s not something I would have ever predicted a decade ago, Apple’s willingness to create APIs for other companies to manage the Mac login experience shows the company understands its role in the enterprise. This week, I want to look at why Apple’s enterprise expansion is going to continue to mature as it focuses on deep integration with other platforms.

When the lockdowns happened in 2020, schools rushed to virtual options to maintain some semblance of “business as usual.” There were unintended consequences, and that was to be expected. However, one company’s unique solution became integral to Irvine Valley College’s virtual instruction, and it continues today. In our temporary living situation, I am without my normal HomeKit setup, so I’ve had to rethink what HomeKit products I want to reconfigure. There’s always been a balance between patching macOS and iOS devices quickly when Apple releases software updates with trying to avoid interrupting a user when they’re working. Over the coming weeks, I’ll look at Apple’s WWDC 2022 announcements that will impact IT professionals in both education and enterprise environments. There’s a lot to unpack this year that might not have made the headlines in most news stories, so I look forward to unpacking the small tidbits and looking at what kind of impact each one will make for IT professionals who manage Apple devices, but also those who use managed Apple devices for work and at school.
