Vision Pro trademark: Forget Huawei, the reality is dozens of others have Apple’s name

Vision Pro trademark | FaceTime usage shown

It’s been reported in the past couple of days that there’s a problem with the Vision Pro trademark, with some noting that it’s already been registered in China by Huawei.

There have been breathless claims that this might force Apple to change the name of the device – but those reports are based on a very incomplete understanding of the situation …

Vision Pro display resolution shown off in Sony video

Vision Pro display resolution | Side-by-side comparison with conventional display

The Vision Pro display resolution is one of the many benefits of the device over its rivals, and we yesterday explained the technology that makes it possible – and how it differs from AR/VR headset displays used by other companies.

We didn’t know at the time that they would be used in Apple’s spatial computer, but Sony actually showed off the displays a full year ago – and it turns out I was being a little unfair to the Cupertino company…

More thoughts on Apple Vision Pro, one week after my hands-on demo

Vision Pro thoughts

I had the chance to try Apple’s new Vision Pro spatial computer at WWDC last week, and I quickly published my first impressions that same day. Over the past week, I’ve had a lot of time to reflect on the experience and read first impressions from a number of other sources.

How have my thoughts changed? Not really… and I think that says a lot about just how impressive Vision Pro is.

The computer is a bicycle for the mind, and Vision Pro is the Peloton

In a recent episode of Scott Galloway’s Prof G podcast, the host walks through his view of why Vision Pro will be a net fail for society.

In short, time using Vision Pro is time not being engaged with your community. Go to the office, go to the grocery store, go to the concert, go to the gym. I’m very sympathetic with this area of thinking. As a remote worker and single parent of five- and ten-year-old kids, the opportunity to meet new people ain’t what it used to be. An ad for Peloton followed the segment. Huh. Anyway…

Vision Pro has the potential to connect us in new ways, but the risk of adding to the loneliness epidemic with mass virtual reality usage is equally present.

Vision Pro needs a cheaper version, but that won’t be easy for Apple

Apple Vision Pro | Apple Event

After years of rumors, Apple has officially announced its mixed reality headset called Vision Pro. The device features state-of-the-art hardware, but that comes with a price tag: $3,499. It’s hard to expect that Apple Vision Pro will have mass adoption in its first generation, which is why Apple needs a more affordable model. But building a cheaper model won’t be easy.

Apple Vision Diary: This is looking like it could be a 2027 purchase

Apple Vision Diary 2027 | Mindfulness on the Vision Pro

Yeah, it is somewhat crazy to start an Apple Vision Diary when the first-gen model isn’t set to go on sale until next year, and I currently don’t expect to buy until the third-gen, and I’m saying I think that could be four years away. But here we are (and I kind of already did).

Let’s start by looking at the timings of Vision Pro going on sale – both theory, and potential practice …

Zuckerberg on Vision Pro: Could be the ‘future of computing’ but ‘not the one that I want’

Zuckerberg Vision Pro comment

Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has shared his thoughts on Apple’s Vision Pro headset. While he admits Apple’s high-end approach “might make sense for the use cases that they’re going for,” he sees the “values and vision” of Meta and Apple as divergent when it comes to headsets and says Apple’s future of computing is “not the one that I want.”

Apple Vision Pro runs at 90Hz refresh rate most of the time

Apple Vision Pro Displays

The Apple Vision Pro announcement on Monday was impressive, but somewhat light on tech specs, partly because the device isn’t finalized yet and still at least six months out from going on sale.

In the marketing materials, Apple said each of the micro-OLED eye displays exceed 4K resolution, with a total of 23 million pixels. But it does not mention “ProMotion” or make any reference to the refresh rate of these panels, other than saying the latency of the overall system is about 12 milliseconds. But a WWDC developer session has the details here …

Mac Virtual Display is limited in Vision Pro – but there’s a workaround

Mac Virtual Display | Man wearing Vision Pro in front of Mac

Apple briefly touched on using Vision Pro as a Mac Virtual Display, which could be a first step toward a true Mac-equivalent spatial computer.

But it did this so briefly, and in such a low-key way, that many missed it. I’ve seen quite a few posts asking whether you can use Vision Pro as a virtual monitor for your Mac. The answer is “yes, but”…

Here’s what it’s like typing with Vision Pro and visionOS

Following the announcement of Vision Pro at WWDC yesterday, Apple is providing more details about the headset itself and the visionOS software platform in developer sessions. In a session on Tuesday, called “Design for spatial input,” Apple showcased two ways to interact with Vision Pro: a floating in-air keyboard and pairing a keyboard via Bluetooth.

Apple Vision Pro looks insanely impressive – but my Vision Air 2 guess still feels right

Apple’s Reality Vision Pro was in some ways one of the company’s worst-kept secrets. We’ve known for years that Apple was working on AR/VR devices, and our renders were close enough to give us a decent preview of the design.

But Apple still knocked it out of the park yesterday! What we witnessed was the most impressive implementation of mixed reality that’s ever been seen, and also the most persuasive (partial) answer so far to the question, Why would anyone use this tech? …

WWDC 2023 keynote and product photos shared by Apple

WWDC 2023 keynote photos

In addition to attempting to summarize each of the WWDC 2023 keynote announcements in just one paragraph each, Apple has also shared photos of both the event itself and the new products announced.

This was the biggest WWDC keynote the company has ever held. Even the 1,000-seat Steve Jobs Theater, which Apple built specifically for events like WWDC and iPhone launches, wasn’t big enough to accommodate the audience for this event – so it was held outdoors …

Everything announced at WWDC 2023, as summed up by Apple

Tim Cook Vision Pro

That was quite the keynote! While Vision Pro of course took the headlines, the company packed in a huge number of announcements. So much so that even Apple thinks we need a summary of everything announced at WWDC 2023.

The company has provided its own take on the highlights of the event, attempting to fit each section of the keynote into a single paragraph – even for Vision Pro …
