iLounge last minute additions: iPod touch dimensions, VoIP app?

Site default logo image

iLounge has published some last minute information on the iPod touch ahead of today’s Apple Event.  They believe these bits of information to be correct (and we must say it helps to be partnered with case manufacturers!):

  • The Sleep/Wake button has shifted from the top left of the device over to the top right, mimicing its placement on the iPhone family.
  • The camera is below the Sleep/Wake button, with a microphone pinhole off to its right.
  • Volume buttons appear to be separate from one another rather than one piece, but stay in the same general position as in the second- and third-generation iPod touch models, as do the Dock Connector port and headphone port on bottom.
  • It is slightly thinner than the second- and third-generation iPod touch. The rear casing has corner and side radiuses that are, as we previously noted, MacBook Pro lid-like, and the center does not bulge, so it can rest flat on a table like the first-generation iPod touch. What used to be a soft curve of the rear shell that wrapped around to surround the front glass is gone.

Perhaps most interestingly, they have some more sketchy information.

Fox will do 99 cent TV shows according to sister company

Site default logo image

The WSJ is reporting that its sister company, Fox, will be giving up iTunes Shows for $.99/ episode along with ABC.  The announcement will be made tomorrow at the Apple event.

Some of these people said Fox agreed to participate in 99-cent rentals for a short period of time, and agreed to the lower-cost price only for broadcast shows it both produces and airs, such as “Glee,” “Bones” and “Lie to Me.” The Apple proposal won’t affect cable shows such as FX’s “Justified,” or Fox network shows, including “American Idol,” for which Fox doesn’t control the digital rights.

According to the people familiar with the matter[like their bosses], part of the calculus for Fox is that News Corp. wants Apple’s help with other digital projects, including the iPad version of The Wall Street Journal and a digital news offering known inside News Corp. as the “Daily Planet,” the name of the fictional paper in Superman comics.

Apple to live stream tomorrow's event

Folks, this is one for the books. Apple has announced they will be live streaming tomorrow’s music related event. This is the first time in recent (thanks, commenters) keynote history that a live stream will be offered. This gives us the sense that something HUGE is going down tomorrow and Apple wants to make sure it’s all seen. Maybe they have to show off something indescribable with live blog pictures? Who knows?

You can catch the stream at Apple.com at 10 AM sharp! Oh, and that live-audio stream we said we’ll try to find? Use this one :) Also: You’ll need a Safari rocking Mac or iOS device to catch the action, PC’s: screw you! It also makes sense that Apple will be offering this stream to ensure their WiFi doesn’t go out like at WWDC due to them’ bloggers. That said, Apple shouldn’t have much issue demoing their new video streaming service and FaceTime-capable iPod touches.

Bloomberg: Netflix Streaming on iTV, released tomorrow

Well, there you have it.  According to Bloomberg, an Army of people “familiar with the matter” have said that Apple will launch a TV service tomorrow with Netflix inside.  iTV?

Apple Inc., preparing to announce a new set-top box that delivers TV to consumers, will include movies from Netflix Inc., according to three people with knowledge of the plans.

The streaming service would be available on the revamped version of Apple TV, due to be introduced tomorrow in San Francisco, said two of the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans haven’t been made public. Users would pay a subscription fee to Netflix for the service, the people said.

Perhaps that’s why the Roku HD player dropped from $129 to $69 with $10 of free content at Amazon overnight.

Hard Candy's iPod touch 4 cases revealed

Site default logo image

Hard Candy broke their iPod touch 4 cases loose, and they seem to follow what we’ve heard so far. There’s that camera on the top-left corner as well as a spot for a microphone, not an LED flash, on the back.  Also check out that funky diagonal on the 30-pin docking bay.

Hard Candy says they are already in full production and should have them ready for launch (below).  Thank you Mr. Devine?

Updated iPhone 4s coming September 30th?

It is hard to ignore this report from CanalMX which seems to indicate that a new revision of Apple’s iPhone 4 will be released on September 30th.  Below is the Google Translation from Spanish:

He [Marco Quatorze, Telcel’s Director of Value Added Services] also said that as of September 30 Telcel will be available in new devices that do not have the malfunction of the reception and explained that the company will have several options to make changes from one phone to another flawed not to take: “If the previous plan is over, you will need to hire a new change for iPhone 4. If, for example, already has one and take three months for payment, change the cell with a re-employment and takes into account the previous time, so instead of paying 24 months, only done in 21. “

The question of the case beyond the phone company that we hire, it is worth evaluating whether to purchase the first version of iPhone4 with all its flaws, or wait a month to be available the new version promises to vindicate the reputation of this controversial but attractive device, though no doubt there will be many users who are not willing to lose this dream so long Smartphone.

This is clearly something that needs to be clarified by Apple and we’ve reached out to their PR department for clarification.

We noted at the Antenna-gate non-issue press conference that Steve Jobs’ response to the free bumper program, which ends September 30th seemed a little ambiguous:

Autodesk's AutoCAD for Mac, iOS breaks loose

Site default logo image

Autodesk today announced the Mac release of their professional engineering and design software, AutoCAD. The initial betas of the Mac version hit in late May and up until then the software was a Windows-exclusive. On top of a Mac version, Autodesk is doing the whole 360 by releasing an iOS version to go along with it. The Universal (iPad, iPod touch, iPhone) app allows you to edit and share your funky pro-design work on the go.

Phil Schillz (Schiller, Apple marketing guru) even got in on the action saying “Apple is thrilled that Autodesk is bringing AutoCAD back to the Mac and we think it’s the perfect combination for millions of design and engineering professionals.”

The Mac version takes full advantage of Apple’s Mac OS technologies such as multi-touch (on laptop and magical trackpads) as well that neat cover-flow interface. AutoCAD for Mac and iOS will be released between August (that’s like today?) and October and free versions for them’ students will be made available then. Pre-ordering is a go on Wednesday (iDay!)

iTunes song/video previews may or may not double in length

Site default logo image

According to CNET’s Greg Sandoval, iTunes previews may double in length as of Wednesday’s iTunes announcement.  Apple wants to improve the iTunes experience and the 30 seconds of music in the preview aren’t enough according to some.

That’s some pretty good news as you can pretty much listen to a whole song, along with a music video and lyrics on YouTube.  iTunes needs to stay competitive there.

Oh, and speaking of Cloud services, CNET says Apple hasn’t obtained the rights to do Cloud music storage and distribution so it won’t be able to store music via the cloud anytime soon.  Downer.

Plex 9 and new Plex iOS app detailed

That September 1st surprise from Plex is a new iOS app that allows iPod touch, iPhone and iPad to be both media devices as well as remotes for the TV.  CrunchGear got a hands on look before launch.  For those who use a Mac as their mediacenter, this news may be as exciting as a $99 iTV.

Plex, if you aren’t aware, is a mediacenter built off of the original XBox MediaCenter  Open Source code.
