macOS Sierra

See All Stories

macOS Sierra (version 10.12) is the name of Apple’s desktop operating system, and was revealed at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference on June 13, 2016.

After using the “OS X” moniker for the twelve previous versions of the OS, Apple, as long expected, adopted the familiar naming convention that’s present for all of its other platforms, such as iOS and watchOS.

macOS Sierra includes some notable enhancements over the incumbent, OS X El Capitan. Features such as Siri, Apple Pay support for the web, Auto Unlock, Picture in Picture, and Universal Clipboard headline the update.

Users can expect additional new features as well, as has been outlined in our post covering many of the new additions to macOS.

macOS Sierra is currently available as a developer beta, with a public beta expected soon, and a public release scheduled for this fall. Once released, the update will be available free of charge from the Mac App Store, just like past versions of OS X.

Fujitsu warns ScanSnap owners not to use scanners with Sierra until major bug fixed [Updated]

Update 2: Fujitsu now has a fix for the main issue for five scanners, available as an app update. A fix for the remaining four scanners is scheduled for October 17. It does not yet know when a fix will be available for editing PDFs of existing affected scans, but says that it is committed to providing this. Full details can be found on the company’s blog.

Update 1: Fujitsu has updated its advice after narrowing down the issue to some much more specific circumstances. The issue appears to be a bug in Sierra, which the company expects to be fixed in an update in mid-October.

  1. Do not use [ScanSnap Organizer], [ScanSnap Merge Pages], or [CardMinder]
  2. Do not use Excellent mode when scanning A3 (11.7 in. x 16.5 in.) documents
No image data will be lost nor any blank pages produced when content that has been scanned in the A4 (8.3 in. x 11.7 in.), Letter (8.5 in. x 11 in.), Legal (8.5 in. x 14 in.), or smaller sizes is saved.
  3. Do not select the following functions in either Quick Menu or Application
    • [Scan to Print]
    • [Scan to Evernote (Document)]
    • [Scan to Evernote (Note)]
    • [Scan to Google Drive]

Fujitsu has taken the rather extreme step of warning owners of its entire ScanSnap scanner range to cease using the device if they are on macOS Sierra until a major bug is fixed. The bug can result in scanned pages being turned into blank pages, and even existing scanned pages can be deleted in some circumstances.

Use this macOS Safari extension to easily watch videos in PIP from YouTube, Netflix and more

macOS Sierra now supports video picture-in-picture just like the iPad for Safari and iTunes. You can pop out a video from the web into a floating overlay that stays on top of other windows and snaps to corners or anywhere on your display when you hold Option.

It’s a really nice feature when it’s available, but a lot of websites do not yet expose a PIP button. Luckily, Developer Arno Appenzeller has released a free Safari extension that enables PIP for Safari, Netflix and more video services. Here’s how to use it:

Opinion: macOS Sierra’s new storage-management tools are a bit of a mess

One of the new features of macOS Sierra is that it can automatically ‘manage storage’ on your Mac. What this means is, if you’re getting low on SSD space, macOS can automatically upload older and larger files to iCloud and then delete them from your Mac. When macOS deletes a file, it leaves an alias that will download the file from iCloud as required.

Effectively, you don’t have to worry about how much physical storage your Mac has – you can just treat it as an infinitely large drive and macOS takes care of shifting things back and forth from the cloud as required.

That’s great in theory, but there seem to be a few flaws in practice …

Tweetbot updated for macOS Sierra and iOS 10, adds extended Tweet support

Yesterday Twitter introduced the ability to send extended tweets that include images and videos without counting against the character limit. This change was introduced months ago, but third-party Twitter clients didn’t have a heads up on how to support the new feature until it launched.

For the last 24 hours of so, Tweetbot and other third-party apps have included URLs to full tweets on the web for extended tweets, and now Tapbots has quickly shipped an update to the Mac that supports the longer tweet format (and iOS support likely isn’t far behind).

macOS Sierra software update for Mac rolling out now, here’s everything new

Site default logo image

It’s been a week since iOS 10 debuted on iPhone and iPad, and now it’s the Mac’s turn with macOS Sierra. OS X is officially no more; long live macOS (version 10.12 to be precise). As its name cleverly suggests, macOS Sierra brings Siri to the Mac for the first time since the voice assistant was introduced in 2011 with the iPhone 4s.

You can free up space on your Mac with a new optimized storage feature, sync your clipboard (and desktop and documents folders) between your Apple devices, watch videos from Safari with picture-in-picture, and use Apple Pay on the web to easily make purchases. You can even bypass your lock screen with your Apple Watch thanks to auto-unlock.

Here’s how to update and what to try in macOS Sierra:

Byword text editor for Mac now works with macOS Sierra’s new tabs feature

macOS Sierra (which I almost forgot comes out tomorrow!) includes a new feature for developers to use tabs in any windowed app. You probably already use tabs in your web browser and Finder gained tabs in a recent OS X update, and macOS Sierra makes using tabs in other built-in apps like Text Editor possible.

Byword is a well-known text editor for the Mac that I personally use to draft stories and edit text for work when I’m not writing in WordPress in Safari. The latest update now lets you collect multiple Byword windows into a single Byword window with tabs just like Safari or Finder.

How-To: Enable hands-free ‘Hey Siri’ voice activation on macOS Sierra

Site default logo image

At this year’s WWDC 2016, Apple introduced the only feature I really cared about seeing making its move onto macOS: Siri. The voice assistant had finally found its way onto the next obvious platform. While I was excited to see it available, I wasn’t ecstatic to see it would take a keyboard shortcut or icon click to launch it. That requirement made it feel like a step back in a world where nearly all of Apple’s devices had begun moving to hands-free Siri activation. Thanks to a tip on Reddit, however, that is no longer the case if you’re willing to do a little work upfront…
