iOS 8.3 includes settings to download free apps and iTunes content without requiring a password

A reader has spotted that iOS 8.3 includes some new configuration options for password entry in the iTunes and App Store. Labelled as ‘Password Settings’, the new view allows users to configure how frequently Apple should ask for the user’s iTunes Store password for purchases. This includes allowing users to choose to allow free apps to be downloaded, no password necessary.

The first option allows users to require passwords immediately or expire after fifteen minutes. This option has existed in previous versions of iOS, under the Restrictions settings. However, the toggle below — ‘Require Password’ for free downloads is an altogether new option. It allows users to download free apps (and other iTunes content) with no need to type a password. Paid content still requires authentication based on the options above.

The setting is currently disabled on iOS 8.3 devices we tested, although presumably it will activate by the time iOS 8.3 is released to the public.

Disney announces Disney Infinity 2.0 mobile built w/ Metal, new ESPN app, and more during today’s special event

Today’s Disney Mobile Product Showcase kicked off with Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, sharing a Steve Jobs anecdote. No matter the time or place it’s always incredibly interesting to hear personal stories of Apple’s late leader.

Iger recalled the time when he contacted his buddy Jobs with what he thought was a novel idea: to unleash movies/TV shows like iTunes did for music. Of course, being the visionary he was, Jobs had already thought of this and even brought an early version of the iPod with video to the meeting. And of course, being the businessman he was, Jobs then asked Iger if he would commit Disney content to the project.

Iger used this story as a jump off for a two hour presentation in which other Disney, ESPN, and ABC executives would showcase a smattering of new mobile apps, games, and products…

‘Third-generation’ Flipboard iOS app gets redesign, 30,000 topics and officially curated content

The popular Flipboard app has received a significant upgrade in version 3.0, in what the company is describing as “the most personal and most magazine-like experience we’ve ever built.”

Apple adding ability to track what you do inside retail apps to serve targeted advertising

Apple is reportedly adding the ability to track what users do inside certain apps in order to present them with targeted in-app ads across iOS devices, reports digital media site Digiday.

Say, for example, a visitor to a retailer’s iPhone app adds a pair of shoes to his cart but ultimately decide not to buy it. In this scenario, the retailer will now be able to retarget that user with an ad for that exact pair — even in another app on his iPad. When tapped, the ad would direct him back to his abandoned checkout page and automatically add the shoes to his online shopping cart.

New official Paper app aims to turn Facebook into a beautiful, magazine-style experience

Update: Now available

Facebook has made many changes to its newsfeed over the years (each usually generating howls of protest on launch and then viewed as business as usual within a week or two), but the interface on web and iOS app alike has seen only minor tweaks. Popup photos aside, it’s essentially remained a clean but uninspiring scrolling layout.

All this is set to change with the launch of Paper, a new iOS-only app set to launch in the U.S. on 3rd February.

All new Call of Duty first/third-person shooter hits iOS devices

Activision has just dropped a brand new Call of Duty game built from the ground up specifically for mobile devices. Strike Team is set in the year 2020 and puts gamers in control of a Joint Special Operations Team attempting to bring justice to an unknown enemy. Gamers are able to freely switch between the traditional first-person shooter view as well as a third-person view. This game features a Campaign mode which promises to be “full of epic, cinematic moments in diverse locations around the world,” and Survival mode that “Put[s] your skills to the test as you fight off waves of increasingly difficult enemies.”

Call of Duty: Strike Team is available exclusively as a universal iOS download for $7. It requires iOS6 and an iPhone 4S/iPad 2 or newer. No word yet on future release dates for Android or Windows devices.

Quick review: Silent Film Director adds Charlie Chaplin flair to your clips

If you haven’t seen it yet on Google.com, today is Charlie Chaplin’s 122nd birthday anniversary. Marking the occasion, MacPhun has updated Silent Film Director, a fun video effects app currently ranked #4 in the US App Store’s photography section.
