In the past, enterprises had a single on-premises IT infrastructure. The businesses were responsible for managing and maintaining their own networks including desktop PCs. These skill sets were often one together – managing a Microsoft computing environment. Today, organizations are tasked with managing SaaS apps, mobile devices, desktops/laptops, internal networks, and more. Many organizations cannot hire enough people to help them manage the onslaught of devices they have today, and that’s why they’re turning to Managed Mobility Service Providers to help them ensure security and productivity.

Apple @ Work: 1Password 8 brings MDM support for IT administrators deploying a password manager across their organization

1Password Okta breach security incident

Apple @ Work is brought to you by Addigy, the ONLY real-time Apple device management platform that combines MDM with live agent capabilities to manage and secure your Apple ecosystem — regardless of your Mac-spertise. Visit addigy.com/9to5Mac for a free 14-day trial to see how Addigy helps you manage your Apple devices in real-time.

Much of Apple’s market share growth in the enterprise can be attributed to the fantastic hardware and software products it releases annually. However, another major reason why Apple has been able to gain traction in the enterprise is because of its commitment to empowering IT professionals to be successful in managing their fleets. If the IT team cannot effectively secure, deploy, or manage their fleet, then it doesn’t matter how good the devices are or if end users love them. The IT department’s mandate requires devices to fit into their ecosystem. The companies behind apps that want to be used in the enterprise know they’ll have an easier time reaching the large install base at organizations using Apple products if they can fit right into the existing management ecosystem. Recently, 1Password added MDM support to 1Password 8 on the Mac, and I want to look at why it’s a critical upgrade.

Tidbyt

One of the balances I am trying to strive for in 2023 is using technology more efficiently. I like to know what’s happening around the world in news, sports, and finance, but I want to look at an iPhone less. I want technology that works passively, and that’s one reason why I am excited to have Tidbyt on my desk for the new year.

Apple @ Work: How SAP was ready for macOS Ventura on day one

SAP

Apple at Work is bought to you by JamfGet complete management and security solutions for your organization that are enterprise secure, consumer simple, and protect personal privacy with Jamf. Plus you’ll get same-day support for the latest Apple OS upgrades, Today, over 62,000 organizations trust Jamf to manage and secure over 27 million devices.

Apple recently released macOS Ventura to all eligible Macs. Typically, home users rush to upgrade to the latest release in order to enjoy the latest features of a new operating system. That’s understandable as well – Apple has a long beta cycle for new versions of macOS with a developer and public betas. At this point, the new operating system is stable. The problem is that not every other developer or accessory manufacturer is ready, though. So it’s quite common for enterprise customers to use the delay major update feature to give themselves 90 days before it becomes available. One organization announced on the macOS Ventura release date that they were ready to go. SAP’s IT staff didn’t block macOS Ventura, so I chatted with Harald Monihart from SAP about their process.

Apple’s stance on end-user privacy is well known at this point. What might not be known is that commitment extends to end-users using Apple products at work as well. When it comes to your personal data on Apple devices being used for work, Apple’s commitment is the same. This week, I want to look at how Apple’s Enterprise Privacy ensures employees know which data can be accessed by their company IT teams.

HomeKit Weekly: Meross water leak sensor provides a low-cost way to gain protection against water damage

Meross Water Leak Sensor

The Meross Water Leak Sensor MS400H is a HomeKit-compatible leak sensor that can connect to your Wi-Fi network. The unit has three parts: the sensor itself, a new Meross hub, and the power adapter for the sensor. The sensor itself is about two inches long by one inch wide and just under an inch deep, so it should fit into most places where you want to place it. It has three prongs on the underside, which is how it detects water leaks. The prongs are also part of the pairing process with onboarding into Homekit, and I’ll cover the weirdness of that later.
