Crowdfunding Roundup: ‘Plug’ local personal cloud, ‘Range’ smart thermometer, more

Site default logo image

Print

As the success stories keep piling up, so do the number of projects filling up crowdfunding websites with, among other things, neat hardware- and software-related products. Some projects, like Pebble, gain thousands of supporters as well as millions of dollars in funding (and end up at Best Buy’s retail stores). Other projects flop and don’t reach their necessary funding amount.

Rather than make you sift through all of these projects, we’re rounding up the best or most notable projects from around the web and delivering them to you in a simple roundup.

  • Plug, local personal cloud-creating device (Kickstarter project) – Connect a hard drive to Plug and all of your devices can sync and share files with those files. In short, Plug is a local Dropbox that you can control.

Snapchat will be glad: iOS 7 beta 4 introduces new screenshot detection API

Following the release of the initial iOS 7 betas, users and developers discovered that the new operating system blocks one of the critical Snapchat features – screenshot detection.

With iOS 7 beta 4, Apple has introduced a screenshot detection API. This won’t be included in Snapchat until the developers work in the new API and beta 4 is released. It’ll also be interesting to see how other developers use this API for their own non-snapchat friends.

Apple responds to Pegatron working conditions report

Screen Shot 2013-07-28 at 9.27.30 PM

Apple has sent a response to the Wall Street Journal with a full response to this morning’s report regarding Pegatron’s working conditions:

Apple is committed to providing safe and fair working conditions throughout our supply chain. We lead the industry with far-reaching and specialized audits, the most transparent reporting and educational programs that enrich the lives of workers who make our products. Apple is the first and only technology company to be admitted to the Fair Labor Association, and we are dedicated to protecting every worker in our supply chain.

As a part of our extensive Supplier Responsibility program, Apple has conducted 15 comprehensive audits at Pegatron facilities since 2007, covering more than 130,000 workers making Apple products including annual audits of Pegatron’s final assembly locations and surprise audits at both RiTeng and AVY within the past 18 months.

Additionally, we have closely tracked working hours at all of these facilities. Our most recent survey in June found that Pegatron employees making Apple products worked 46 hours per week on average. Excessive overtime is not in anyone’s best interest, and we work closely with our suppliers to prevent it. Apple surveys working hours for more than 1 million employees across our supply chain each month and we report the findings on our website.

We have been in close contact with China Labor Watch for several months, investigating issues they’ve raised and sharing our findings. When they first told us that workers’ ID cards were being withheld, an auditor from our Supplier Responsibility program was on site the next day to investigate. We confirmed that labor brokers for Pegatron were holding a small number of IDs as they helped set up bank accounts for those employees. We demanded Pegatron put a stop to this practice and a new system was in place within a week.

Their latest report contains claims that are new to us and we will investigate them immediately. Our audit teams will return to Pegatron, RiTeng and AVY for special inspections this week. If our audits find that workers have been underpaid or denied compensation for any time they’ve worked, we will require that Pegatron reimburse them in full.

Our audits involve a thorough review of timecards and other documents to guard against falsification. We will investigate these new claims thoroughly, ensure that corrective actions are taken where needed and report any violations of our code of conduct. We will not tolerate deviations from our code.

Apple believes in transparency and accountability, both for our suppliers and ourselves. We realize being a leader in workers rights and being transparent with our findings opens us to criticism, but we believe strongly that we can make a big difference in the lives of millions of people by doing so and this provides us the courage and resilience to continue the journey. We are proud of the work we do with our suppliers to uncover problems and improve conditions for workers. By vigorously enforcing our supplier code of conduct, we ensure that our suppliers follow the same principles and values we hold true.

Much of the report is “PR speak,” but the company addresses claims of Pegatron holding worker IDs and employees working excessive hours.

Apple’s secretive Boston office working on Siri’s speech recognition; perhaps a Nuance replacement?

For a few months, Apple has maintained a secretive office near the MIT campus. Now, Xconomy reports the company has been hiring notable speech recognition talent to use the location as a speech recognition research office.

Apple has assembled a small team of notable names in speech technology and is looking to expand those efforts in the Boston area, industry sources tell Xconomy.

Based on their online job profiles, we can say that members of the Apple speech team here are working on Siri, the company’s voice-activated virtual assistant. Details beyond that are hard to come by, however, even for others in the field.

Many companies build small liaison offices near suppliers of products and technology to help in cross-collaborative work…

Phone and texting app ‘Viber’ hacked by Syrian Electronic Army [update 2: Viber, Kayako comments]

viber

The Hacker News is reporting that communications app “Viber” has been hacked by the Syrian Electronic Army, a “pro-Assad hacker group”. In addition, their support webpage was defaced before the company took the page down. Support.Viber.com currently leads to a “403 Forbidden” page.

The defaced webpage before it was taken down

The webpage placed by the SEA stated:

Dear All Viber Users,

The Israeli-based “Viber” is spying and tracking you

We weren’t able to hack all Viber systems, but most of it is designed for spying and tracking

Screenshot of a hacked system: [screenshot]

It is unclear if the SEA is planning on using this information or if their sole intention was to expose the tracking information stored in Viber’s database. Each record in the database stores the UDID and IP address of each call, however, one may presume this information is stored for purposes other than tracking and spying on its own users (e.g. presenting the data to the proper law enforcement authorities upon request).

We’ve asked Viber to comment about the scope of the hacking and defacing and will update this post if new information arises.

Update: Viber has responded to our request for comment:

Today the Viber Support site was defaced after a Viber employee unfortunately fell victim to an email phishing attack. The phishing attack allowed access to two minor systems: a customer support panel and a support administration system. Information from one of these systems was posted on the defaced page.

It is very important to emphasize that no sensitive user data was exposed and that Viber’s databases were not “hacked”. Sensitive, private user information is kept in a secure system that cannot be accessed through this type of attack and is not part of our support system.

We take this incident very seriously and we are working right now to return the support site to full service for our users. Additionally, we want to assure all of our users that we are reviewing all of our policies to make sure that no such incident is repeated in the future.

Update 2: The maker’s of Viber’s customer service helpdesk software Kayako have responded to the situation as well, noting that it is an isolated situation and the email phishing was the vulnerability that allowed for the hacking.

The security of our customers’ helpdesks and data is our highest priority. As Viber said in their statement, this looks to be an isolated compromise of an individual’s account. Even so, we have taken the precautionary measure of auditing our systems. At this time we have no reason to believe that any other Kayako system or customer has been affected and we will continue to monitor the situation.

Security researcher claims to have accessed full names, Apple IDs and user IDs of developers and non-developers

Site default logo image

Screen Shot 2013-07-22 at 9.34.44 AM

Security researcher Ibrahim Balic is claiming to have reported a Developer Center security hole just hours before the portal went down.

After reviewing the information and speaking with Balic, it seems as if Apple’s website could be breached through a simple unescaped injection attack. We haven’t seen the script ourselves, so this isn’t completely confirmed.

Balic was able to access first and last names, Apple IDs/email addresses, and user IDs. From the information he showed in a YouTube video (update: the video has now been taken down) and what he described to me in an email, the leak does not show any other information.

https://twitter.com/ibrahimbalic/status/359347248473190402

In an email to me, Balic also states that the exposed Apple IDs belong to developers as well as regular users. His YouTube video description stated he was able glean over 100,000 users’ information, but is planning on deleting all of the information.

He is insistent in stating he did this for security research purposes and does not plan to use the information in any malicious manner.

xRec app brings screen recording to non-jailbroken iPhones

[youtube=http://youtu.be/zc47UEmx5fs]

Screen recording directly on iOS devices has usually required the device to be jailbroken. Rather than recording sans-PC, the general solution is to hook up the iPhone/iPad to a computer and use some sort of a mirroring app then record the computer’s display. Now, the app xRec has made its way into the App Store. As you can see in the video above, you do have to deal with a red “xRec” bar at the top of all screens since it is taking advantage of iOS’ recording APIs. On the plus side, you can quickly record the entire operating system on-the-go without plugging into a computer.

Of note, the app currently does not work with iOS 7 and it seemed to crash multiple times on my current-gen iPod Touch. Even after a reboot, opening the Mail app or a game crashed the recording.

The developer assures me iOS 7 compatibility is on the way (after iPad compatibility is built), but stability of the current app would be more appreciated.

xRec is available in the App Store for $1.99.

Apple continues mapping buying spree with HopStop to beef up transit directions [Update: confirmed]

Site default logo image

hopstop-logo

Following this morning’s news that Apple has acquired Locationary, Bloomberg is reporting that Apple is purchasing the mapping app ‘HopStop’.

New mapping software Apple debuted in September with the iPhone 5 has been faulted for getting users lost and for its lack of public transportation directions. HopStop shows users in more than 500 cities the fastest way to travel by foot, bike, subway and car.

With this purchase, along with the purchase of  including PlacebaseC3Poly9, and now Locationary, it looks like Apple is working hard to improve their mapping apps. Among other complaints about Apple’s Maps, many didn’t like the lack of public transportation options that the previous mapping system provided by Google had. HopStop describes itself thusly:

Also, the company’s CrunchBase profile claims they have “free door-to-door mass transit, walking, biking, and taxi directions for over 1,000 transit agencies in over 750 cities throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, Russia, Israel, Australia and New Zealand.” Back in 2011, HopStop’s CEO Joe Meyer claimed in an interview (below) that 70% of users were using the service 25 times or more per month. With that data in mind, it looks like HopStop’s data is extremely valuable for mapping users.

OS X Mavericks, which is slated to be released in the near future, will include a new Maps app to accompany the iOS app.

A new trend? ‘Posegram’ developer shows off iOS 7 UI elements in older iOS versions [Video]

[youtube=http://youtu.be/GL1LtTshEYs]

Even with the release of iOS 7 still in the far future, many users are wanting to use the new features and overall design. While many have resorted to installing the ‘developer only’ betas, others may find that an update to the “Posegram” app will keep them satisfied for the time being. The developers of the app, which is pretty much Instagram except with suggested poses that actually aren’t too bad, have integrated many of the design elements that make iOS 7 extremely unique and desirable.

As seen in the gallery below, they have created made the app’s menu bar transparent, the settings looks exactly like the Settings app in iOS 7, and pop-up options have the same look and feel as you would expect from the upcoming operating system.

In the video above, you’ll see a quick demo of how the app works and the way the design is integrated into the app. There are some noticeable flaws – including the way the transparent menu bar works – but overall, it’s an extremely notable effort and could signal a new trend in apps over the next couple of weeks or months.

Posegram is available free in the App Store.

DigiTimes changes course, claims Retina iPad Mini will launch in fall

digitimes-logo

It looks like DigiTimes is reversing course on its earlier report and now reporting the Retina iPad Mini will be released in October, basing that information off of the timeline for LG’s new Retina displays that would ship with the new device.

The sources also added that LG is reportedly making new headway in producing Retina panel technology for use in the next-generation iPad mini, and expects to ship about 2-3 million units a month in preparation for Apple’s expected October release date.

At this point, it looks like we have no solid information about the release date, despite this report’s claim of October 2013. DigiTimes has been extremely hit-or-miss, so it would be unwise to take this as complete verification.

Non-developers receiving iWork for iCloud invites

Site default logo image

While the iWork for iCloud beta has been available for developers and those who logged in with the current beta software for about a month now, it looks like Apple has begun inviting non-developers to the online document editing program. Tipsters have sent us in emails from the company asking them to try out the services and send in feedback.

We’d like to invite you to be one of the first to try it, so we’re giving you early access to the iWork for iCloud beta. All you have to do is sign in to iCloud on a Mac or a PC using the current version of Safari, Chrome or Internet Explorer. Then just click on Pages, Numbers, or Keynote and you’re off.

Users that have received the invitation don’t need to visit beta.icloud.com – they can just use the regular icloud.com address.

Back in June, we posted a video review of iWork for iCloud:

VLC returns to the App Store after two year hiatus

largeVLC

After a nasty licensing issue that broke out in 2011, VLC was removed from the App Store. Today, the media player is destined to make a comeback, complete with new features like WiFi content uploading, which makes it even easier for you to get content from your desktop to the app on your iOS device.

In some sense, this app may be too little too late, as the trend toward video streaming has increased tremendously over the past few years. Going through all of the effort to transfer your videos from your computer to phone/tablet may not be worth it. However, users who are going to be without an internet connection for some time – or those with low data caps – will find the new VLC app quite useful.

From our own Benjamin Mayo:

Although I greatly appreciate the engineering effort necessary to make the decoding process multithreaded, a big boon for multicore iOS devices, the app’s UI still leaves much to be desired.

Expect the app to appear in the App Store shortly.

Update: It’s out now.

Uber Ice Cream delivering tomorrow, one day only

ice-cream-app-3

As announced on the company blog, popular transportation app Uber will have ice cream trucks available from 11-5 in 33 cities tomorrow.

If you are lucky enough to live in one of the cities, you can pop open the app tomorrow and slide to the “Ice Cream” option. The ice cream isn’t cheap – around $4-5 per person and bundled together for five or six people – but the near-instant gratification and overall experience may make the high cost worth it.

Uber is available for free in the App Store.

Apple/Liquidmetal patent hints at high-volume production capabilities

In the past, Apple was able to sneak Liquidmetal into production by building the SIM ejector tool using the material. Now, it looks like Apple and Liquidmetal Technologies’ joint venture company, Crucible Intellectual Property, is preparing for mass volume production through manufacturing techniques found in a new patent called “Bulk amorphous alloy sheet forming processes”.

Since the metal is expensive,  liquidmetal won’t be replacing the aluminum shells of iOS or OS X devices anytime soon. However, it could easily replace glass in some areas, since it is strong and radio transparent.

No matter the case, it’s intriguing to see the progress with this new technology and this patent seems to indicate its high-volume debut may be nearing.

Report: At 56%, Apple TV takes majority of streaming device marketshare in 2012

appletv_smallsize

As the Apple TV continues to receive new channels, Frost & Sullivan’s “Analysis of the Global Consumer Video Devices Market” has the “hobby” device taking the lion’s share of the IP Streaming Devices market in 2012.

screen-shot-2013-07-14-at-7-03-17-pm

Roku took about a fifth of the marketshare and TiVo was down to just 6.5%. Notably, Google TV must have been placed into the “Others” slice of the pie.

Apple’s executives are quick to reiterate their view of the Apple TV as a “hobby device”, even as the content library begins to grow. The $99 device now has Netflix, Hulu Plus, HBO Go, WatchESPN, MLB.tv, NBA, NHL, WSJ Live, Sky News, YouTube, and a few others.

Just last week, Tim Cook and Eddy Cue attended the Sun Valley conference, where many tech and media big shots meet together and many impactful deals are made. Live TV or a larger content library could be in the Apple TV’s near future, depending on the negotiations with content providers and media networks.

Another Microsoft iOS app: Outlook for Office 365 subscribers

mzl.ucumplym.480x480-75
This morning, Microsoft announced the launch of their new iOS application, “OWA” or Outlook Web App. Specifically for Office 365 subscribers, this native application brings notifications and other features that are not available through the web application:

Our goal is to help our customers remain productive anytime, anywhere.  This includes providing a great email experience on smartphones and tablets.  Windows Phone 8 comes with a top-notch native email client in Outlook Mobile, and we offer Exchange ActiveSync (EAS), which is the de-facto industry standard for accessing Exchange email on mobile devices.  In order to better support many of our customers who use their iPhones and iPads for work, we are introducing OWA for iPhone and OWA for iPad, which bring a native Outlook Web App experience to iOS devices!

OWA for iPhone and OWA for iPad are both free, but require a paid Office 365 subscription.

Last month, Microsoft Office 365 made its debut in the App Store, but the reviews have been less than stellar.

Thanks to App Store’s fifth anniversary giveaway, Infinity Blade II downloaded 5.7 million times in the past week

mzl.wsbsdueh.320x480-75

Last week, Apple celebrated the App Store’s fifth birthday by giving away five apps and five games, which included Tiny Wings, Where’s My Water?, and Infinity Blade II.

While infinity Blade II has returned to its regular $6.99 price, Chari Entertainment, the game’s developers, have told All Things D that the app was downloaded over 5.7 million times as a result of the promotion.

The action-RPG sword-fighting game added 5.7 million new players in seven days. Laura Mustard, publicist for the game’s developer, Chair Entertainment, said 1.7 million downloads occurred on Monday, the first day of the promotion.

The report goes on to note that the available in-app purchases could boost revenues for the company, which is probably getting bombarded with higher support queues and server loads.

After going elsewhere for next year’s processors, Apple claimed to use Samsung for 2015 A9 chips

apple-a6-processor

While the relationship between Samsung and Apple remains shaky and unpredictable, the Korea Economic Daily is reporting that Apple will be back to using Samsung as the supplier for the A9 chip in 2015.

In 2014, TSMC is expected to be supplying the A8 chips to power the next-generation iPhones. In addition, we noted earlier that Apple is now rumored to bring fab production in-house, but that will take time as the company hires experts in the field and prepares manufacturing for the necessary output.
