Review: Fantastical for iPhone, the calendar upgrade iOS 6 is missing

Site default logo image

Flexbits, makers of the popular Fantastical Mac app, launched an iPhone version of its streamlined calendar app this morning with the goal of bringing the simplicity and user-friendly experience it has become known for on the Mac to iOS users. The new Fantastical app might not be as feature-filled as other third-party calendar iOS apps, but what it lacks in features it certainly makes up for in style. After a week with Fantastical for iPhone, I can confidently say the app feels like the calendar upgrade iOS 6 was missing.

One thing I love about the Fantastical Mac app compared to other calendar apps, and even Apple’s own Calendars app on OS X, is the overly simple UI. Better yet is the app’s natural language parser, allowing users to enter a sentence such as “lunch tomorrow” to automatically schedule a lunch meeting for noon the next day. While Fantastical for Mac users will feel right at home with a familiar interface to the desktop menubar app, the introduction of a touchscreen also brings a big new feature to the Fantastical UI: the DayTicker…

Google updates Google Drive app and Chrome app for iOS

Google just updated both the Google Drive and Chrome apps for iOS.

Google Drive’s most noteworthy new feature is the ability to edit spreadsheets, just like Google Docs. The Drive Team elaborated on the newest update via the official Google Drive blog:

From the Drive app on your iPhone, iPad or Android device, you can create a new spreadsheet or edit an existing one. You can switch fonts, resize columns, sort data, and more. And just like on your computer, you’ll be able to see other people’s edits in real time as they’re made.

The latest version also boasts improved text formatting when pasting, while Android users can exclusively edit text within tables in documents and add a homescreen shortcut to any file in Drive.

Google Drive’s full changelog (on the App Store):

  • Create, edit and collaborate on spreadsheets
  • Upload to Drive from other apps using “Open in…”
  • Manage upload progress and see recent uploads in new Uploads section
  • Rich text copy-paste within a document
  • Improved speed and stability
  • Improved contact search for sharing
  • Bug fixes

The Chrome app also just updated, with version 23.0.1271.91 (yeah, long version number) now live, and the notable tweaks include the ability to open PDFs in other apps, save boarding passes and tickets with Passbook, and enable text-encoding detection in settings. The app also features stability and security improvements and many bug fixes.

Not a joke: Will.i.am iPhone camera accessory throws pixels and keyboard onto iPhone BOOMBOOM POW

We told you last week that musician Will.i.am would soon launch an iPhone accessory, called “i.am+”, and now the world has its first look at the product line that transforms the smartphone’s camera into a 14-megapixel powerhouse.

According to the Telegraph, the four models, respectively called “C.4”, “V.4”, “C.5”, and “V.5”, feature interchangeable lenses, such as standard, fish-eye, wide, and zoom, with a built-in flash. An iOS app further enables the hardware to have an Instagram-like experience, with photo editing, filters, and sharing options built-in. Folks will also have access to individual online profiles at www.i.am.

The Black-Eyed Peas frontman said his accessories enhance both the clarity and definition of photographs: “We have our own sensor and a better flash. You dock you phone into our device and it turns you smartphone into a genius-phone. We take over the camera.”

The i.am+ accessories basically fit over the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 in contemporary and vintage flavors, as seen in the picture gallery below, but they also come with a hefty price tag. The line ranges from £199 (roughly $318 USD) for the modern black model to £299 (roughly $477 USD) for the gold model. The i.am+ V.4 unit with gold trim and a “Vintage Look”  are the most expensive but boast a slide-out keyboard.

The iPhone 4 versions will launch Dec. 6, while an iPhone 5 version, which bulks the iPhone’s camera with a new sensor and flash, will not ship until 2013.

A gallery is below.

Sparrow for iPhone now supports iPhone 5 and Passbook

Sparrow for iPhone just pushed out version 1.3.3, and the changelog solely includes support for iPhone 5 and Passbook.

There is not much else to report regarding the update, but hit up the App Store now to check out this popular Google-acquired mail client. It costs $2.99, but it has a four-star rating based on over 5,000 reviews:

The company announced the app would get iPhone 5 support in September, but today’s rollout with Passbook support is a neat bonus. It further suggests Sparrow has plans to continue bulking its services for the time being, as it has done for the Sparrow for Mac counterpart, despite the Google buyout.

Let us know in the comments how Sparrow has integrated Passbook. We’re checking it out, too.

Four years on, almost 1M apps have been built for iOS

As we arrive on four years of the iOS App Store being made available, Apps Fire (via The Next Web) pointed out this morning that the thriving app marketplace will reach 1 million total apps approved for iOS. Apps Fire tweeted that the milestone will be reached later today; however, The Next Web said it confirmed that Apple reached 1 million total apps, already.

[tweet https://twitter.com/appsfire/statuses/270437631664476160]

According to AppShopper, another app discovery service that tracks the App Store, the current number of approved apps by Apple sits at 995,382. As for the number of apps actually available for download on the iOS App Store, there are 714,883. At any rate, it’s clear that Apple has/will reach the milestone—even if publicly announced or not.

During the iPhone 5 launch event in late-September, Apple announced that its average customer now uses over 100 apps. Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said, “It’s been an absolute revolution. It’s phenomenal. Together with the incredible products, these have helped us achieve an incredible milestone.”

Warner Bros. launches ‘Day After US’ iOS app for next-day streaming of TV shows

Update: Warner Bros. reached out to 9to5mac to clarify some of the confusion surrounding the app’s launch. The app is specifically for markets without access to iTunes TV shows, initially available in Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. This is likely why the app was pulled after accidentally making its way to the US App Store. Warner Bros. will officially be launching the app on Monday.

Warner Bros. just launched a new iOS app for both iPhone and iPad that allows users to watch the most current episodes of the network’s TV series the day after they aired in the U.S. The app, called “Day After US”, is available for free in the App Store and provides the ability to either stream shows over Wi-Fi or download episodes for offline playback. Warner Bros. will make the first episode of each series available for free and charges users per episode or season to unlock the rest of the content. The app’s iTunes page also said episodes would be available in multiple languages with “localized audio dubs and dynamic subtitles” available for some languages. Some of the available series mentioned on the app’s iTunes page include: The Big Bang Theory, The Vampire Diaries, and Gossip Girl.

App Features Include: • Offline playback: Download episodes directly to your device to playback at anytime • Steaming playback: Stream an episode instantly over Wi-Fi • Multiple languages: Watch the episodes in your language of choice • Real-time news: Live Twitter and Facebook updates • Explore WB catalog: Browse other app editions created by Warner Bros. • Localized audio dubs and dynamic subtitles are available in certain languages.

Jawbone released Up, an app-enabled wearable fitness tracker, roughly one year ago, but a slew of hardware issues ensued, and now the company has corrected those errors and launched a second iteration of the product today with 141 new parts.

The primary problems with the original version of Up concerned water contamination and flexibility. It was apparently not durable enough to handle moisture, and many users who came into contact with water subsequently reported damaged internal parts, while other users snapped components if they bent or twisted the bracelet. There were also many complaints regarding battery life issues.

Jawbone’s CEO and founder Hosain Rahman said his team went back to the drawing board, however, and the new Up design is now perfect after 46 weeks worth of user trials and testing:

“UP marks our commitment to solving everyday problems for real people. We’ve combined hardware, software and data, developed 28 new manufacturing processes, and created unparalleled testing standards validated by nearly three million hours of real-world testing. The resulting breakthroughs have allowed us to create the category’s first truly day-and-night wearable product – a band that looks great and fits effortlessly into the way you live, along with an app that delivers detailed data with meaningful insights to help you achieve your goals.”

Up is essentially a rubberized bracelet with sensors and a 3.5 mm headphone jack concealed by a removable cap. Users must plug Up into an iPhone to sync it with an iOS app and retreive measured data on their sleep habits, activity level, moods, and more.

The bracelet comes in three sizes and eight colors, and it is available starting today for $129.99 at Jawbone.com, Apple, AT&T, and Best Buy. The updated Up by Jawbone iOS app is also available for free in Apple’s App Store.
