Tapbots ship Tweetbot for Mac and introduce Netbot for App.net

Site default logo image

After several months in public and private betas, Tweetbot for Mac, the OS X version of the popular iOS Twitter client, has finally been submitted to the App Store and will be available soon. Users disappointed by the recent news that Twitter has internally canned Twitter for Mac will be excited to see a new Twitter client available to fill in the gap left by Twitter’s buggy app, especially on Retina displays.

Not only has the crew at Tapbots been hard at work on this project, but they have also been working on a new “bot” to add to the family. Today The Next Web announced the upcoming launch of Netbot, a version of Tweetbot built for the up-and-coming premium social network App.net. Netbot uses a similar interface to that of Tweetbot, so users of the original app will feel right at home, but incorporates all of App.net’s unique features, like cover photos on user profiles. iPhone and iPad versions of Netbot ship separately for $4.99 each, and are available on the iOS App Store right now for iPhone and iPad.

A long list of additional camera support includes Canon’s EOS 650-D/Rebel T4i, the Canon EOS M, and many others. Camera Raw 7 and DNG Converter 7.2 are also now available through Photoshop CS6.

A few apps are being updated today to include support for the Passbook app in iOS 6. TheNextWeb reported that McDonald’s is launching the feature in France, Airbnb is using it for upcoming reservations, and Eventbrite is launching new “beautiful tickets” for the app.

We love the idea that every time you open Passbook to access your coupons or loyalty cards, you’ll also see your Eventbrite ticket to that upcoming event you’re really looking forward to.  And with location and time-based Passbook notifications, your event ticket automatically appears on your home screen ready for use when it’s needed.

Discover what apps people nearby are using with App Map for iPhone

Site default logo image

A new free app launching in the App Store today, called “App Map,” allows users to discover apps based on the most commonly used by other iOS users in their area. After prompting the user with the usual dialog to allow access to location, App Map requests access to “send a list of your recently used Apps” to its server. Within the app, users can view a list of trending apps worldwide, as well as a live-updating map and list of nearby apps based on number of users and distance from their current location.

App Map does not appear to store all of the apps on a user’s device but instead collects a selection of what it deems the most used (in my case: a couple apps that have not been used in several months…and a total of 7). In some cases, an app’s name is not recognized properly or it is changed, but App Map allows users to correct or “Identify” those apps by searching from an app index.

App Map analyzes the list of running Apps on your phone (don’t worry, we can’t see any of your private data!) and simultaneously shows you what Apps are being used nearby… Help us confirm identity of the Apps you use (inside of the “Me” tab), and you’ll receive even more relevant results! Search for Apps that are not recognized to help others identify theirs, automatically.

According to the app’s developers, the app does not collect any of users’ private data:

New clause in Apple’s App Store guidelines could kill app promotion apps market

A large number of iOS users were disappointed to run into a “bug” last night that repeatedly asked users to agree to new terms and conditions. The problem, which is not uncommon when a high volume of users attempt to activate the new T&C’s at once, is now fixed. In related news, some may be surprised to learn that Apple’s newly updated App Store review guidelines include a new clause that could restrict the way apps advertise other apps and promotions within their own. It could also mean trouble for promotional app services such as FreeAppADay and other cross-promotional apps that often have the power to sway App Store chart rankings. PocketGamer.biz first noticed the new clause that appeared in Apple’s updated guidelines a couple of weeks ago:

Car Facts for iPhone comprehensively manages car repairs, expenses, and more

We’ve been testing out a new iPhone and iPod touch application called Car Facts. The application is a comprehensive way to manage several pieces of data and information during the life span of your ownership of a car.

The application allows you to input every time you refuel your car with gas, conduct a repair, and you can view all of these car facts on nicely rendered graphs within the application on your iPhone or iPod touch.

There are several options for inputting your previously conducted car repairs:

The application allows you to input information such as different car readings like the odometer for future reference.

The car repair management feature will also send you reminders for when recommended car part replacements or checks should be conducted. The user interface and options are very comprehensive for inputted repairs. Again, you can input how much these repairs costed in order to create graphs of how much money you spent on your car.

You can even store photos of your receipts for repairs within the application. This feature is handy if you ever need definitive proof that your car was serviced. Information such as where you had your car repaired can also be stored.

If you have multiple devices, you can sync all of the information you have inputted into Car Facts over Apple’s iCloud sync service. Since Car Facts stores a lot of important information about your car, the iCloud sync also makes things easier if you replace or purchase a new iOS device.

The free version of the application allows you to store up to one vehicle. However, there is a $3.99 in-app-purchase Car Facts upgrade available. This update allows you to store an unlimited amount of vehicles within the application.

The general user-interface for Car Facts is somewhat reminiscent of the popular Tweetbot iOS Twitter client.

The settings portion of the application allows you to choose from several global currencies, fuel units, distance units, and default fuel octane levels.

The application works well in our tests, and we are impressed by how comprehensive the options are for inputting milage, various pieces of data for your car, and repair information.

Apple no longer calls iOS6 Maps ‘the most beautiful, powerful mapping service ever’

Site default logo image

As noted by iDaily.de, Apple has not only begun recommending competing mapping services but it also removed some superlatives from the Maps page.

All of which may just make this app the most beautiful, powerful mapping service ever.

Changed to:

All in a beautiful vector-based interface that scales and zooms with ease.

Digg for iPad arrives alongside updated iPhone app

On top of introducing a dedicated iPad app, Digg released a big update to its iPhone app that includes a new “Reading Sync” feature, which allows you to pick up reading where you stopped on any device, and support for the iPhone 5. Version 3.1 also packs the following new features and improvements (which are also included in the new iPad app):

When we relaunched Digg last month, we said that we wanted to build an experience that is native to each device. The tablet is quickly becoming an important device for Digg users, and the iPad is leading the way, at nearly 30% of mobile visits to digg.com.

What’s New in Version 3.1

◆ Introducing Digg for iPad!
◆ “Reading Sync” — close the Digg app before you could finish a story? The next time you open Digg on your iPhone or iPad, you’ll pick up where you left off

Apple launches alternative Maps app section in App Store

Apple is prominently spotlighting alternative solutions to the new Maps app on the App Store.

The promotion of third-party apps is in conjunction with CEO Tim Cook’s open letter from this morning that apologized to iOS customers for the company’s less-than-perfect Maps offering. Apple further detailed on its website today how to add Google and Nokia maps website icons to an iOS 6 device’s Home screen.
