WWDC 2013 Roundup: iOS 7, OS X 10.9, MacBooks, ‘Genius-like’ Radio app (plus new tidbits)

Site default logo image

By this time in 2012, Apple had taken the stage and dominated the news cycle multiple times to announce products like a new iPad, Apple TV, new Mac operating system, and various other software for both iOS and OS X. However, the first half of 2013 has been low on Apple product introductions as the company, coming off of a big fall, has focused on minor tweaks to existing products.

Even though Apple has been out of the limelight, the Cupertino company has been hard at work on a slew of new hardware, software, and services products, and the company plans to introduce new versions of iOS, OS X, and the MacBook Air at its WWDC conference next week. Apple will be holding a keynote on 10 AM on Monday to talk about these new products.

Below, you can find our much-anticipated WWDC 2013 roundup along with many new tidbits about what Apple is preparing:

Apple to offer its own iPhone trade-in program for the first time

Site default logo image

Just off the wires, Apple appears to be ready to offer trade-ins on iPhones for the first time according to Bloomberg. Apple currently offers a free recycling program for older devices but this would seem to follow efforts by companies such as Gazelle, Amazon and others who offer big bucks for older iOS devices and Macs.

Apple Inc. is starting an iPhone trade-in program this month aimed at getting users to upgrade to the iPhone 5 and turn in older models, people with knowledge of the plans said.

Apple has teamed up with Brightstar Corp., a mobile-phone distributor, to run the exchange program, said the people, who asked not to be identified because Apple hasn’t publicly announced the plan.

The trade-ins will only be done at Apple Retail Stores and will allow customers to recieve credit instantly. Recently, Best Buy began offering Free iPhone 5s with plan for an iPhone 4 or 4S trade-in. Apple apparently liked the idea – Brightstar counts both Best Buy and Apple amongst its client list. Apple also worked with Brightstar to help AT&T and T-Mobile with their recent trade-in promotions.

Used iPhones collected in the U.S. will only be resold in emerging markets, where Apple’s share is lower and demand for cheap devices is greater according to the report.

Interactive iPhone 5S with iOS7 concept based on recent leaks

Product comparison site Recombu has created an interactive iPhone 5S with iOS7 simulator, in large part based on our exclusive preview of what to expect.

9to5Mac has heard new details about the iOS 7 redesign from sources. According to the site, iOS 7 has been described internally as “black, white, and flat all over.” Skeumorphic elements have been dropped in favour of flatter and cleaner designs, with Ive apparently saying that physical metaphors “don’t stand the test of time.”

The simulation, based on a roundup in which most of the content will be familiar to 9to5Mac readers, allows you to switch on the phone, swipe to unlock and click on a number of the app icons to see non-functional mockups of what the new apps may look like …

Removal of ad-free built-in YouTube app from iOS pays off big-time for Google

Site default logo image

The removal of the ad-free built-in YouTube app from iOS seems to have paid-off for Google, with the ad-enabled replacement version contributing to a tripling of the video-sharing site’s mobile ad revenue in the last six months.

YouTube owner Google reports (via Bloomberg) that more than half of all U.S. smartphone owners have used the YouTube app, and that a quarter of traffic comes from phones and tablets. Figures released earlier this year by Ooyala showed that iOS users account for two-thirds of mobile video viewing, and Google previously revealed that the same proportion of its mobile searches came from Apple’s iPhone and iPad users. iOS users are more engaged than Android users and Google clearly knows this …

Apple’s $149 in-store iPhone screen replacement service, and the machine that makes it possible

Site default logo image

In a move designed to save $1B a year, Apple is now replacing damaged iPhone screens in-store in place of its previous policy of swapping them for a new handset. 512pixels.net grabbed this photo of the machine used to calibrate the screens after replacement.

The move is good news for customers too, as out-of-warranty screen replacements will cost $149 instead of the $229 cost of a replacement handset, and you won’t have to restore your data from backup (although you are of course still advised to do a backup before any kind of repair is carried out).

The move raises a question-mark about the value of AppleCare coverage for an iPhone …

Logitech acquires creators of TidyTilt Kickstarter project that raised over $200k

Logitech today announced that it acquired smartphone accessory startup TT Design Labs, a company that first received media attention for its ‘TidyTilt’ magnetic earbud holder and kickstand that raised over $200,000 through a Kickstarter campaign. As part of the deal, the two co-founders of TT Design Labs will be joining the Logitech team, while two of the company’s products will soon be relaunched and evolved under the Logitech brand.

The company will be launching the Logitech TidyTilt earphone holder and the Logitech JustMount in the coming weeks and is already accepting preorders through its website. JustMount is a magnetic cube designed to work with TidyTilt to hold up an iPhone vertically and store earbuds, keys, and more.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this deal is the fact that Logitech is keeping an eye on innovation that’s happening in the Kickstarter and crowd-funding space. Not only did Logitech tell us that it’s “excited to tap into this pool of innovation and talent” in the crowd-sourced funding area, it wouldn’t rule out the possibility of going the crowd-funding route for introducing its own future products.

“The big winners with today’s announcement are smartphone users,” said Derek Tarnow, co-founder of TT Design Labs. “In Logitech, we’ve found a true partner that shares our focus on creating great products designed to improve people’s experiences with the technology they love. We’re very excited to be working with Logitech.”

We reviewed and quite enjoyed the first iteration of the TidyTilt last year (the latest version includes a full case).

Didn’t get your order? UPS sorter charged with sneaking 60 iPhones/iPads out in his pants

More than a few people in and around Springfield, Virginia have not been receiving their Apple orders over the last six months as wusa9 reports police have arrested a 31-year-old UPS sorter for stealing over 60 iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks:

Stephen A. Owens, a UPS sorter, was reportedly taking unopened Apple products, stuffing them into his pants or otherwise concealing them and then selling them at bargain prices, officials say.

“Thefts were reportedly taking place in batches since September 2012, and included such items as Macbooks, iPhones, iPods and iPads all being shipped directly from Apple to new customers. UPS became suspicious when customers started calling to inquire or complain that they had not received their products,” according to a news release from the Fairfax County Police Department.

Police say the 6-month investigation found the sorter was taking the Apple products directly from unopened packages at UPS and selling the devices at discounted prices online throughout D.C, Maryland and Northern Virginia.

Russian newspaper claims Apple has applied for ‘iWatch’ trademark in the country

Site default logo image

While Apple typically uses a shell corporation abroad to register for trademark names of upcoming, unreleased products, Russian newspaper Izvestia (via AppleInsider.ru) reports that the company has filed for the “iWatch” trademark in Russia, further fueling speculation that “iWatch” will be the name of Apple’s much rumored wearable, wristwatch device.

Tonight newspaper “Izvestia” gave a sensational news: the company Apple has filed with Rospatent application for registration of the trademark ” iWatch “. We think, do not even need to explain what this might mean.

While the report gives the impression that this is confirmation of an upcoming watch product from Apple, it’s of course not that simple. Apple has a couple times ran into issues with trademarks of new products, most notably with its long-lasting trademark battle over the iPad trademark in China and its decision to rename Apple TV from its original “iTV” moniker due to troubles with the British TV network of the same name. Apple, and most other companies for that matter, also typically trademark several names and variations prior to product releases that may or may not ever see the light of day. Apple would also have to go through a number of companies developing smart wristwatch-like devices that have filed for the trademark in the US (many as recently as February).

ITC rules Apple violates Samsung patent, limited ban could apply to iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, 3G iPads

Site default logo image

The United States Trade Agency has ruled that Apple has violated one of Samsung’s smartphone and tablet-related patents.

Under the modified constructions, the Commission has determined that Samsung has proven that the accused iPhone 4 (AT&T models); iPhone 3GS (AT&T models); iPhone 3 (AT&T models); iPad 3G (AT&T models); and iPad 2 3G (AT&T models) infringe the asserted claims of the ’348 patent. The Commission has further determined that the properly construed claims have not been proven by Apple to be invalid and that Samsung has proven that a domestic industry exists in the United States with respect to the ‘348 patent. The Commission has determined that Apple failed to prove an affirmative defense based on Samsung’s FRAND declarations.

Due to this ruled breach of Samsung’s patent, Apple could face limited bans on certain AT&T iPhone and iPad models. Some of the products named include: iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2 3G, and the original 3G-capable iPad.

Update: Apple has commented on the ruling to AllThingsD:

Apple makes more money per account than Amazon – analyst figures

Data from Morgan Stanley (via Apple Insider) shows that Apple has more active accounts and makes more money per account than Amazon. Apple has half a billion active accounts, against Amazon’s 200m, and last year generated revenue of $329 per Apple ID, compared to Amazon’s $305 per account.

The account and revenue numbers don’t tell the whole story, of course …

New Eye-Fi Mobi SD card transfers digital camera content to iPhone/iPad instantaneously via built-in WiFi

Many casual photographers have been reaching for their smartphones over their digital cameras recently for the convenience of social media integration and other sharing options. Eye-Fi has long offered photographers the option to transfer high-quality media from standalone cameras to personal computers and mobile devices but required intermediary WiFi hotspot access – a major obstacle for photographers shooting on location outdoors and in remote locales.

Today, Eye-Fi announced the “Eye-Fi Mobi,” which instantaneously beams new photos and content from digital cameras (without WiFi capabilities) to your favorite mobile device. “Simply replace any camera’s standard SD card with Mobi, and just two quick steps later, the camera’s photos instantly appear on the selected iOS or Android smartphone or tablet.”

The Eye-Fi Mobi puts beautiful, high-quality images on your mobile device ready to be uploaded to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or any other social network.  The built-in WiFi means you’ll never have to seek out network access to transfer your pictures.  Setup does not require a computer, account or cloud.  Just download the Eye-Fi mobile app to get started.

Eye-Fi Mobi is available now in two flavors; 8GB ($50), 16GB ($80).

Plastic iPhone back plate spotted in China or just iPhone 5 in a case?

Numerous global sites are running images this morning with what the posters claim are plastic backings of upcoming ‘value’ iPhones. Because of the lack of any evidence that these are real we’re running these only for discussion. As Mark said last night, these could be anything.

https://twitter.com/markgurman/status/341290891761303554

The above image appears to have a Lightning cable inserted but no markings on the back while the below image seems to show another look at the back.

Nowhereelse.fr applied filters to the top image and from that it appears that the plastic iPhone shell is just a case…

In other unlikely iPhone 5S news, Apple.hdblog.it thinks it has found a bunch of the iPhone 5S parts we’ve been seeing for the past few months:

Apple again plans AirDrop wireless file-sharing for iOS

Site default logo image

Apple is currently testing versions of iOS 7 internally that include the AirDrop WiFi-direct file sharing tool from the Mac, according to people familiar with the software.

Like with the Flickr and Vimeo integration that we previously reported on, it is very simple for Apple to remove any single feature from the new operating system ahead of the mid-June unveiling.

Additionally, Apple has scrapped AirDrop late in software development from iOS before. Last year, we reported that Apple was developing an AirDrop tool to take advantage of the new WiFi hardware inside of Apple’s latest iOS devices. Because Apple has postponed the feature before, we believe it is possible that the feature could be pushed back again…

Konami releases ‘Contra: Evolution’ for iPhone & iPad, a remixed version of the classic shooting game

Update (6/26): A US-optimized version of Contra: Evolution has been re-released this morning on the App Store and is available for download now.  This re-issued version of Contra also includes new levels, an improved control system and in-game weapon shop.

Update (6/3):  We have been told that the release of ‘Contra Evolution’ on the US App Store was a mistake.  Konami is currently developing a US version of this game that will be released later this year.  Please stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

Today Konami released a brand new iteration in the Contra series, although it should look pretty familiar.  Contra Evolution is basically a remix of the original Contra most gamers fell in love with a long time ago in a classic arcade.  At first glance, this title appears to include enough familiarity to embrace nostalgia, while mixing in some new features and characters to keep the gameplay fresh.

https://twitter.com/gmanagent32/status/340628590146252800

Gamers can choose to play as all the original characters plus two brand new female players.  Konami boasts that the updated HD graphics and weapon system “will provide a whole new experience in the world of Contra!”

If you’re feeling nostalgic for some traditional Run n’ Gun gameplay, it’s safe to say Contra Evolution won’t disappoint.  Available as an iPhone or iPad download for $.99 each.

Best Buy is offering a free -> $150 iPhone 5 trade-in offer, but it may not be your best bet

Site default logo image

From 9to5Toys.com:

Update: Deal is now live.  Today / in-store only.

This morning CNET confirmed some of the same rumblings we’ve been hearing from retail tipsters.  Best Buy will be offering $150 trade-in value for any iPhone 4 / 4S, yielding a free 16GB iPhone 5 (Sprint, Verizon or AT&T) with a 2 year contract thanks to their current $50 off promo.  This deal is only valid in-stores on Saturday June 1st.

Definitely a solid deal for heavily used, less desirable models (Sprint, Verizon), but be sure to check other trade-in services before heading into a Best Buy store.  For instance, Gazelle will pay you $215 for a 64GB iPhone 4S AT&T (good condition), plus another $10 if you use the special 9toToys promo.  In some cases, Amazon will pay upwards of $300 for an iPhone 4S.  Per usual, selling privately (eBay, Craigslist, etc) generally yields the highest payout but requires the most time and effort.  Make sure you survey all of your options before jumping into bed with Best Buy.

A quick first look at the new iPod touch 16GB [video]

http://youtu.be/CGcTrCyokUQ

This 1m 27s video without commentary from CinematicTech is essentially just a video slideshow of the latest version of the iPod touch quietly introduced by Apple on Wednesday night, but it’s prettily done. The new model differs from the previous in losing the rear camera and loop attachment, and being available in just one two-toned model: black and silver.

iPhone owners get 50 percent more use from their phones – usage data

Site default logo image

iPhone owners spend 50 percent more time using their phones than Android owners, according to new data from Experian, which sampled 12,770 American smartphone owners.

iPhone users spend an hour and fifteen minutes using their phones per day, a full 26 minutes more than the typical Android phone owner. Additionally, iPhone and Android smartphone owners use their phones in markedly different ways. For instance, 28% of the time that Android users spend using their phones is dedicated to talking, whereas iPhone users spend only 22% of their smartphone time talking on the device. Android owners also devote a greater share of time visiting websites on their phone than iPhone owners. On the other hand, iPhone owners spend a disproportionately greater share of smartphone time than Android owners texting, emailing, using the camera and social networking …

Tim Cook: We have no religious issue with doing Android apps, but we won’t do Chat heads on iOS

Site default logo image

Tim Cook noted during his interview at the D11 conference tonight that “Apple has no religious issue porting an iOS app to Android,” but was careful to point out that they would only do so “if it made sense.”

When asked about Facebook’s Android home screen replacement and whether such access would ever be available to developers on Apple’s platform, Cook noted that there are plans to allow deeper access to iOS, but such changes will only be allowed if they don’t impact the customer’s experience. Kara Swisher specifically asked about the possibility of Chat Heads becoming part of iOS, but Cook was quick to shoot the idea down:
