Here’s a first look at an AT&T nano-SIM for the iPhone 5

Shortly after Apple announced the iPhone 5 on stage last Wednesday, we confirmed the company chose to go with the nano-SIM card as its new standard to support LTE. We got a closer look this evening at the first official nano-SIM card from the world’s biggest iPhone carrier, AT&T. You will see the 76mm of plastic above—which you will surely become familiar with over the next few days. As you can see, the nano-SIM looks roughly 40 percent smaller than the micro-SIM that first debuted on the iPad 3G.

We got a look at another U.S. carrier last week, T-Mobile’s nano-SIM. T-Mobile launched an aggressive campaign trying to persuade unlocked iPhone customers to come over to its Magenta network for “big savings.” For those across the pond, we also got a look last week at Vodafone’s nano-SIM offering.

Bluetooth-based Jawbone conveniently declares ‘the dock is dead’ following Apple’s move to 9-pin adapters [Video]

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hj1iO78d6AM]

With the unveiling of Apple’s new Lightning connector and often necessary 30-pin adapters for the iPhone 5 and refreshed iPod lineup, it is perhaps a perfect time for Jawbone to declare “The Dock Is Dead” in its latest ad for the Big Jambox wireless Bluetooth speaker. We put previous generations of the speaker to the test, but the new Jambox has since improved on many of the areas that the old model lacked. We also had positive experiences reviewing other products from Jawbone in the past.

Sorry Foxconn, Apple is reportedly placing 50 to 60 percent of its iPad mini orders at Pegatron

As the great delivery men of this country rush the iPhone 5 to those who pre-ordered, more rumors of the upcoming iPad mini are dropping in. According to Taiwan paper Economic Daily News, Apple decreased its reliance on the famous Foxconn for iPad mini orders and has instead put the bulk of the load on Pegatron. Taiwan-based Pegatron is said to manage up to 50 percent to 60 percent of the iPad mini orders placed by Apple, thus doing away with Foxconn as the sole iPad manufacturer.

AT&T announces record iPhone pre-orders, company’s fastest selling Apple device ever

It is starting to look like last weekend was a huge one for the iPhone 5. In a press release this morning, the nation’s second-largest carrier, AT&T, announced the iPhone 5 is now the fastest-selling iPhone the company has ever offered. It even beat out last year’s iPhone 4S, which saw huge sales. “AT&T set a sales record with iPhone 5 over the weekend, making it the fastest-selling iPhone the company has ever offered,” said AT&T in a press release.

Apple spoke limitedly Friday afternoon about the amount of pre-orders it saw on the first day. “Pre-orders for iPhone 5 have been incredible. We’ve been completely blown away by the customer response,” an Apple spokesperson said in a statement, which also echoed previous years’ statements. At the same time, shipping times on online stores for the iPhone 5, including through Apple and AT&T, began slipping drastically.  The stock of opening day iPhone 5s were diminished completely in the first hour of pre-orders on Friday morning, with shipping pushed to “14-21 business days.”

[tweet https://twitter.com/reneritchie/status/247672092756148224]

The iPhone 5 will arrive to customers who pre-ordered on Sept. 21. For those who didn’t pre-order, Apple and the carriers will open their stores at 8 a.m. to make the iPhone 5 available. We suspect the same message given by AT&T goes the same for Apple and other carriers. More should be announced soon.

First third-party Lightning to 30-pin adapters show up on Amazon for $10-18 (Ebay too)

Site default logo image

.

Look what just popped up on Amazon: A company called Nanotch is offering pre-orders for 30-pin to Lightning adapters. There had been concern when a report last month said the 9-pin adapters were only going to cost $10 each and Apple would be the sole manufacturer, but neither looks to be true.

The company listed the following features:

  • Lightning cable adapter for newest generation of Apple products.
  • Adapter to use your new Apple products with older accessories.
  • Use your iPhone 5 with older models of accessories.
  • 20cm cord.
  • Small adapter for easy connection.

There was some controversy in the first few hours of the iPhone 5 pre-orders because Apple’s Store website said a 30-pin adapter was included with the iPhone 5. Apple quickly removed the error but confused some customers in the process.

The Nanotch item is currently listed for pre-order. As with most third-party Amazon sales, buyer beware.

Update: Ebay has these as well and another item, which more closely resembles Apple’s adapter, is from seller ‘iTronz” below and ships next week:

Full fifth-generation iPod touch and seventh-generation iPod nano schematics, blueprints on file

Site default logo image

Just as it did for the iPhone 5, Apple posted schematics for the new fifth-generation iPod touch and seventh-generation iPod nano—both of which will be available to customers in the coming weeks. The blueprints are certainly useful if you are in the accessory game. You can see the iPod touch above (get a look at where the Loop is and the top area that should not be obscured by metal) and the iPod nano past the break (also notice a Bluetooth antenna area):

Most Yahoo employees now have the option of getting an iPhone 5

.

A fantastic, if not very accurate, title at BusinessInsider: “Marissa Mayer Just Gave Every Yahoo Employee An iPhone 5”! Well, not really, but it backs up an earlier claim.

The former Google executive did offer high-end smartphones to most of its employees (if the memo BI received is legit) including the iPhone 5, three Androids and a Nokia Lumia Windows Phone. These are probably the top phones on the market today, and they will replace the BlackBerries that Yahoo! employees were given until this point.

The memo is below. Mayer was notorious for her use of Apple’s iPhone, even within the walls of Google.

We have a very exciting update to share with you today – we are announcing  Yahoo! Smart Phones, Smart Fun!  As of today, Yahoo is moving off of blackberries as our corporate phones and on to smartphones in 22 countries.  A few weeks ago, we said that we would look into smartphone penetration rates globally and take those rates into account when deciding on corporate phones. Ideally, we’d like our employees to have devices similar to our users, so we can think and work as the majority of our users do.

Moving forward, we’ll offer you a choice of devices as well as provide monthly plans for the data and phone.

The smartphone choices that we are including in the program are:

* Apple iPhone 5
* Android:
– Samsung Galaxy S3
– HTC One X
– HTC EVO 4G LTE
* Windows Phone 8:
– Nokia Lumia 920

We’re getting started right away and taking orders starting now

Clearly, Yahoo will buy a lot of iPhone 5s for its employees if they truly have freewill in the decision.

Apple on iPhone 5 pre-orders: ‘we’ve been completely blown away’

Earlier today, Apple’s initial allotment for iPhone 5 launch day pre-orders sold out. Now, Apple has told AllThingsD that it is “completely blown away” by customer response:

“Pre-orders for iPhone 5 have been incredible,” Apple spokeswoman Nat Kerris told AllThingsD. “We’ve been completely blown away by the customer response.”

The new iPhone 5 includes an all new design, taller display, A6 processor, an improved camera system, LTE, and more. The product goes on sale in stores and will begin being delivered next Friday, September 21st.

iPhone 5 Nano-SIMs headed to T-Mobile in October

Site default logo image

We already knew T-Mobile had big plans for the iPhone in coming months when it announced plans to launch the Unlimited & Unlocked iPhone marketing initiative on the same day as the iPhone 5 launch. Today, we get confirmation from TmoNews that nano-SIMs are indeed on the way to T-Mobile for customers wishing to use the new iPhone on its network. The carrier expects the SIMs to arrive in October, but we are hearing they have already started arriving. You will, of course, first have to get your hands on an unlocked iPhone 5.

AT&T now out of opening day iPhone 5 stock, orders now pushed back to ’14-21 business days’

Site default logo image

AT&T just ran out of Sept. 21 stock for the iPhone 5. The delivery page has now pushed sales to “14-21 business days,” which equals almost three to five weeks. Verizon ran out of stock earlier today, but it is hard to determine if this shows demand per carrier since AT&T is such a big legacy iPhone carrier and Apple obviously gave it a lot more stock than others.

[tweet https://twitter.com/9to5mac/status/246631458775646208]

Both big carriers have downsides: AT&T will not run FaceTime unless you buy a Mobile Share plan, while Verizon will run FaceTime on all of its iPhones—but new customers must sign up for a Mobile Share plan (no matter what). In addition, the CDMA version of the iPhone, which Verizon and Sprint both carry, will not support simultaneous talk and data. Speaking of Sprint, it is still advertising ship dates of Sept. 21.

Apple begins pre-orders for the iPhone 5: $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB, $399 for 64GB, shipping Sept. 21

Site default logo image

It certainly been a huge week for those glued to the latest out of Cupertino: After the iPhone 5 unveiled at a media event in San Francisco Sept. 12, Apple further continued the excitement by making the device available for pre-order on its website this morning in nine countries. The three largest U.S. carriers also joined in on the fun, offering the iPhone 5 at $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB, $399 for 64GB on a two-year contract. Customers will find plenty of delays when attempting to get their pre-orders in, which is typical for Apple iPhone launches. Word on the street is that the Apple Store app is the quickest way.

Apple further made the fifth-generation iPod touch available, featuring five new colors and a 5-megapixel camera, along with the seventh-generation 5.4mm iPod nano, for pre-order this evening. Customers will be able to pre-order the new iPod touch starting at $199 for 16GB and $299 for 32GB, while the new iPod nano starts at $149. Apple said it would begin shipping both in October.

As for when the iPhone 5 will ship, Apple said the first batch of pre-orders will be made available Sept. 21 in the U.S., Canada, U.K., France, Germany, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore alongside in-store units. As pre-orders begin ramping up late into the evening morning, we expect shipping times to start increasing quickly. We laid out a full pricing matrix below:

Walmart to begin iPhone 5 pre-orders at 8 a.m. tomorrow, 16GB version priced at $189.97 (Target, too)

Site default logo image

Update: Target has also started accepting preorders for iPhone 5, according to CNET, through its almost 1,500 retail outlets.

The nation’s largest retailer, Walmart, will begin offering iPhone 5 pre-orders in-stores at 8 a.m. on Sept. 14, as Bloomberg first noted. At the same token, Apple will allow customers to reserve devices tomorrow and will begin offering pre-orders online at 12:01 a.m. PST—alongside Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T. However, Walmart might be the spot to shop. The retailer will undercut Apple by $10 and offer the cheapest pricing for the iPhone 5: $189.97 for the 16GB version on a two-year contract. Walmart will make the iPhone 5 available for pick up Sept. 21 in-store, the same day as Apple and the nation’s big three carriers. Pricing for the 32GB and 64GB version at Walmart is not clear, but we suspect both also undercut Apple by $10.

Scott Forstall says that Australian ‘turn by turn’ in Maps is in qualifying stages

For Australians wondering why turn-by-turn is not turned on in iOS Maps, or when it will turn on for that matter, a forwarded email from Apple Senior Vice President of iOS Scott Forstall may shed some light. The email is in response to the question of whether or not turn-by-turn “will be switched on for us Aussies in the near future?” Forstall responded:

Australia is definitely important to us. We first need to make sure our data is exceptional and qualified before turning on turn-by-turn.

Forstall’s reply seems to indicate it will pop up very soon.

Update: Luke Hopewell from the Aussie Giz has the same email and some additional local color.

Apple clarifies new Advertising Identifier, a non-personal UDID replacement, in iOS 6

Site default logo image

Apple’s iOS device UDIDs are commonly used for advertising and application user tracking in iOS. Earlier this year, Apple announced that iOS 6 will no longer support UDIDs. Instead, UDIDs will apparently be replaced, for advertisers at least, with a new feature called the Advertising Identifier. This identifier, unlike the UDID, does not tie personal device information to the ID. It is also non-permanent. Apple explains in the iOS 6 settings:

iOS 6 introduces the Advertising Identifier, a non-permanent, non-personal, device identifier, that advertising networks will use to give you more control over advertisers’ ability to use tracking methods. If you choose to limit ad tracking, advertising networks using the Advertising Identifier may no longer gather information to serve you targeted ads. In the future all advertising networks will be required to use the Advertising Identifier. However, until advertising networks transition to using the Advertising Identifier you may still receive targeted ads from other networks.

Along with this new identifier, Apple allows users to limit ad tracking in iOS 6. Apple says that some advertising systems used by App Store applications may still track information until they are updated to support the new ID system.

Sprint confirms no wideband audio support for iPhone 5

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0lsV4be3UE&feature=youtu.be]

While Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller notably left out U.S. carriers when talking about the iPhone 5’s enhanced wideband audio at Apple’s event yesterday, we get clarification today from at least Sprint that the feature will not be supported. PhoneScoop reported that Sprint’s “HD Voice” service works on CDMA x1 technology, while the iPhone 5 and many other carriers around the world use WCDMA networks for the feature. Apple said the wideband audio feature would be available through 20 carriers at launch, but it only mentioned Deutsche Telekom and Orange.

After weeks of delays, Sharp begins shipping iPhone 5 displays to Apple

After weeks of delays and claims about Sharp not being ready for mass production of the next-generation iPhone screens, The Wall Street Journal reported Sharp is now delivering iPhone 5 displays to Apple with mass production beginning earlier this week. The Wall Street Journal seemed confident that Sharp, LG Display, and Japan Display are the only display suppliers of initial iPhone 5 shipments—with no mention of Samsung.

Mass production of the screens for the iPhone 5, which Apple unveiled Wednesday, began earlier this week at Sharp’s factory in central Japan, the person said…That Sharp has started delivering screens could ease concerns about whether Apple will have enough components to meet global demand for the new iPhone. Sharp is one of the three suppliers of the screens, the others being Japan Display Inc. and South Korea’s LG Display Co…

Cricket becomes first pre-paid carrier to announce iPhone 5 availability, ships Sept. 28 (Update: GCI, Appalachian and C Spire too)

Site default logo image

Pre-paid carrier Cricket has become the first of its kind to announce availability for the iPhone 5—the device that was introduced yesterday at a media event in San Francisco. The iPhone 5 will be available on Cricket beginning Sept. 28, which is one week after it becomes available on AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint in the United States. Past a launch date, Cricket has not provided any information on its launch page nor in its press release seen below in regards to pricing. We will let you know when more information becomes available.

The iPhone 4S first launched on Cricket on June 22. It also launched with several other pre-paid carriers in many regions around the country to “make the best smartphone more accessible to an even broader market,” Apple stated. We suspect Cricket will not be alone in offering the iPhone 5. [Cricket]

Update: C Spire, a Mississippi area regional, just announced it will also carry the iPhone September 28th.

Update 2: Alaska’s GCI and Appalachian Wireless are also in on the September 28th parade.

Update 3: Kentucky-based Bluegrass Cellular will have iPhone 5 on September 28th too.

Updated: Trade-in your old iPhone for a shiny new iPhone 5

Note: This is an update from a previous post in light of today’s iPhone 5 unveiling; values have also been updated.

The next-generation iPhone launched today and some trade-in values are already slumping by $50 or more, so now is the absolute last minute to start exchanging those soon-to-be old models to earn some extra cash for the new iPhone 5. 9to5Mac compiled a list of reliable places to help you trade an ‘ole dusty iPhone for cash or credit—up to $460 in some cases!

Online gadget resellers are experiencing a huge smartphone trade-in surge, as we reported yesterday, but they warned 9to5Mac that today’s attractive prices would not maintain with the iPhone 5 shipping in less than two weeks.

Gazelle, which is one such website that noticed the ballooning amount of trade-ins, said it witnessed a 1,550 percent increase in Web traffic following today’s Apple announcement.

“We’ve had around a 75 percent increase in offers presented since yesterday,” Gazelle Chief Gadget Officer Anthony Scarsella told 9to5Mac. “Last year, prices declined 25 percent in the week following the announcement. We expect something similar to this.”

Before browsing the options below, take a moment to identify the condition, features, and model of the swappable iPhone. This will help determine its potential value, because most online programs use a survey to calculate the iPhone’s estimate. Moreover, it is prudent to act now, as retailers will likely drop their prices as the launch date draws nearer.

Check out the top 10 trade-ins list below.

Apple shows off photos from the iPhone 5’s redesigned camera

Site default logo image

Ready to tout the new features of its iPhone 5, Apple just posted a page on its website dedicated to showing off what type of photos the iPhone 5’s 8-megapixel camera can take. During the event, Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller explained that the 8-megapixel iSight camera was “enhanced” thanks to a new “sapphire crystal lens covering.” Schiller added that the new camera can take photos up to 40 percent faster and is 25 percent smaller to compensate for the iPhone 5’s smaller body. In the gallery below, you will find the first shots from the iPhone 5. They definitely look good, but I am not too sure there is much of an improvement from the iPhone 4S’ camera. I will let you be the judge, however: [Apple via Gizmodo]

Jony Ive explains design process of Apple’s new EarPods [Video]

Site default logo image

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Rme3uZ_abc&feature=plcp]

We told you they were coming: Apple officially unveiled its new “EarPods” earlier today. The company explained during this morning’s media event that the EarPods are three years in the making. Apple has yet to post the video of the full iPhone 5/iPod event, but now we get a look at a video played during the presentation. It features Jony Ive explaining the process of creating the new earbuds. In addition to the engineering process described by Ives above, Apple explained on its website that it tested over 100 prototypes to make the EarPods more durable and stable than its previous-generation earphones:

Apple engineers asked more than 600 people to test over 100 iterations of the Apple EarPods. Testers ran on treadmills in extreme heat and extreme cold. They performed various cardio workouts. They were even asked to shake their heads side to side, up and down. The result: Apple EarPods provide stronger protection from sweat and water, and they’re remarkably stable in the ear. Which means they stay in, even when you’re on the go.

Apple releases Lightning to Micro USB adapter for Europeans

The Apple Store has come back online following Apple’s media event that just wrapped up in San Francisco. We’ve gotten a look at several smaller products from Apple, and we’ve found one more. For the Euro-folk, Apple has released a Lightning to Micro USB adapter, available for £15.00 and shipping within three days. Presumably the fine men and women of Cupertino have made the adapter available to comply with certain regulations regarding the Micro-USB standard. [Apple Store]
