iPhone 4, Late 2010 13-inch MacBook Air & more obsolete from the end of the month

iphone-4

If you have an iPhone 4 or Late 2010 13-inch MacBook Air in need of repair, you may need to act quickly: Japanese site Macotakara is reporting that Apple will declare both products obsolete from the end of the month. This means that Apple will, with a a couple of exceptions, no longer offer parts or repair services for these products.

You’re already out of luck for the CDMA version of the iPhone 4, which lost support last month, along with three Macs.

The 3rd-generation AirPort Extreme and 2nd-generation Time Capsule will reportedly meet the same fate on October 31 …

These Mac, iPod, & Beats products are losing Apple repair support, moving to ‘obsolete’ status in December

As it does regularly with older products, Apple is about to move a bunch of Macs, iPods, and accessories to obsolete status, meaning the products will no longer be eligible for service or repair support through Apple retail stores or authorized third-party channels. So if you happen to have one of these products and need a hardware repair of some kind, you’ll have until early December to do so at an Apple Store or authorized service provider.

Pendulum accessory turns Apple Watch into a necklace pendant or pocket watch

A new product from Bucardo turns the Apple Watch into a necklace pendant or a pocket watch with the company’s upcoming Pendulum Collection of jewelry accessories.

The collection includes a vintage-style pocket watch accessory for the 42mm Apple Watch in two styles, and a line of pendant necklaces for the 38mm Apple Watch, all available in either 14k or 18k gold plating or sterling silver and various designs. The accessories are designed with a hinge so they can be worn with the Apple Watch’s display covered and protected, or optionally exposed as the centrepiece of the necklace pendants:

Featuring silver and gold plating and crystals by Swarovski®, the Pendulum Collection includes offerings for both men and women. For men, Bucardo presents a thoughtfully designed pocket watch with a refined pinstripe or hammered cover that flips open to reveal the Apple Watch face. For women, Bucardo offers two takes on the vintage-inspired pendant. The locket pendant conceals the face of the Apple Watch behind an eye-catching cover that features a constellation or starburst engraving. Worn around the neck uncovered, the charm pendant allows wearers to personalize their look with a selection of elegant charms. Each accessory is accompanied by a detachable chain.

The collection ranges from $150 (or $100 for early Kickstarter backers) all the way to $5,000 for the line’s Starburst Locket Pendant Necklace in 14k gold with a 3mm white or black diamond.

The company will also include a “a custom-fit cedar wood insert designed to be used as a freestanding docking station for the Apple Watch” with the collection.

You can check out the full collection and order through the crowd-funding campaign launching this week. Shipping for Kickstarter backers is scheduled to start early December in time for the holidays.

Widow recycles Apple I computer, not realizing it was worth $200k

With only around 200 Apple I computers ever made, they fetch six-figure sums these days – but it seems not everyone knows their value. The San Jose Mercury News reports that a woman dropped off several boxes of electronics at a South Bay recycling company, saying she just wanted to “get rid of this stuff” to clear out her garage after her husband died.

The woman didn’t leave her details, and the company didn’t go through the boxes until some weeks later, when they discovered the vintage computer. They have now sold it to a private collector for $200,000.

It’s not all bad news for the mystery woman, though: recycling company Clean Bay Area says its policy is to give half the proceeds of sales to the original owner, so if she comes forward she’ll receive a check for $100k. Chancers will be out of luck – Vice President Victor Gichun, who took in the boxes from her, says he remembers both the woman’s face and her SUV. All she has to do to collect is show up.

“Where’s the mouse?” Today’s kids try to figure out an Apple II [Video]

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PF7EpEnglgk]

If you ever wanted an illustration of how far computer technology has come in a single generation, this video portrays it well. A bunch of kids who’ve grown up with Macs, iPads and iPhones, and for whom apps and the web are as natural as breathing, try their hand at an Apple II – starting with the challenge of how to switch it on.

Scarily, I’m old enough to have used an Apple II and now feel slightly nostalgic, but I don’t think I’ll be trading in my MacBook Pro anytime soon.

Samsung acknowledges one Apple invention: there’s an Apple II in its Innovation Museum

Photo: The Verge

Samsung and Apple may spend rather a lot of time arguing about who invented what in patent trials, but Samsung does at least acknowledge one Apple invention. The Samsung Innovation Museum, opened to mark the 45th anniversary of Samsung Electronics, includes an Apple II, described as “the first home computer.”

Original iPhone will soon reach ‘obsolete’ status in Apple Retail Stores

According to internal Apple documentation, the original iPhone, which first debuted in 2007, will soon enter “obsolete” status, with a few exceptions. The official switch will happen on June 11, 2013, when the iPhone, along with several other Macs and Xserve models will officially be classified as vintage and obsolete products by Apple. Thanks, G!

Review: TwelveSouth’s BookBook case for the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro

Site default logo image

We’ve reviewed and enjoyed a number of TwelveSouth products over the years. We were intrigued by the hollowed out book idea with the company’s original BookBook case for the MacBook Air and since it has brought out similar hand distressed leather BookBook cases for other Apple devices, like the iPhone and iPad mini. While maybe not the ideal option for Apple’s anti-skeuomorphic cheerleaders, I found the stark contrast to Apple’s sometimes cold industrial design a nice juxtaposition.

I tend to not use any skins, covers or cases when using my MacBook on a day to day basis. I slide my MacBook into a laptop pouch built-into my backpack or use a standard laptop case when on the go, and rarely do I actually leave the MacBook in the case when in use. A case was necessary for protection when traveling, but for me the average soft or hard plastic laptop case never quite does the pricey, Jony Ive designed Apple hardware inside justice. BookBook is different…
