Should you update your iPhone 4S to iOS 8? This video shows what you are in for
A few weeks ago we warned that iOS might be a little rough for iPhone 4S owners. Apple’s trailing edge iPhones always hobble a bit on the latest iOS release and test results on iOS 8 showed significant lag.
However, the video above sent in by a tipster shows that in everyday usage, the lag isn’t so bad when going from iOS 7.1.2 to 8.0.2 (most pronounced in App Store). Perhaps that point update released this week, besides fixing bugs, also included optimizations for the older phones.
Review: 5 inexpensive pocketable Bluetooth speakers from Omaker, Koss, Boombot and Mpow
We’ve long held that the extra cost of high end Bluetooth speakers from Bose, Ultimate Ears, JBL and Cambridge Audio Minx (all pictured above top row) were well worth the extra money even at prices up near $200 and beyond. But the fact is that not everyone wants to spend a lot of money on a Bluetooth speaker, and portability and ruggedness are often priorities over pure sound. For those people, we went on a search for high quality Bluetooth speakers that cost much less.
Our top 5 are speakers in this category from reviewing about 20 are from Omaker, Koss, Mpow and Boombot…

Talking Schmidt: Google Chairman says Samsung had [iPhone 6-level products] a year ago (Video)
Google Chairman Eric Schmidt and Jonathan Rosenberg are on their How Google Works book tour and they got the fun questions from Bloomberg.
At 5:30 in the video:
RUHLE: You mentioned smartphones. How do you feel in the last week when you drive by any Apple store, San Francisco, LA, New York, and there are people lined up around the block? So even though way more people carry Android phones, how does Apple have that desire factor?
SCHMIDT: I’ll tell you what I think. Samsung had these products a year ago.
Amusing.

New rubber gaskets around buttons help iPhone 6/Plus withstand brief dips in water
[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpx6r5FVXPo&start=47]
In iFixit’s ritual dismantling of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus last week, the repair company noted that Apple had started including rubber gaskets around the power and volume buttons likely in an effort to make the iPhone more water and dust resistant.
Similar gaskets surround the volume buttons. Altogether, this seems to represent a move toward increased water/dust resistance, and therefore improved durability.
iFixit
How did Apple do? Well iPhone warranty provider Squaretrade was able to dunk both the 6 and 6 Plus for 10 seconds without any real damage. While this is indeed nice to have, especially for those of us who like to take our iPhones with us to the pool, it is by no means a guarantee like Samsung and Sony have on some of their phones.
And then there is the toilet. If you are willing to go after your iPhone 6 within a few seconds, you might actually have a good chance at saving it.
The slightly amphibious nature of the iPhone 6 isn’t entirely new either. Previous iPhones have been able to go underwater for a few seconds (see iPhone 5c below) but as you can see buttons and features rapidly begin to fail.

Apple to open its 14th German retail store in Hannover this Saturday September 27th at 10am
After 17 months of construction and delays, Apple has made it official: the Hannover Germany Store will open this Saturday at 10am local time. The multi-level store will be the 14th Apple retail venue in Germany and will be modelled similar to the Opera Paris Store which opened in 2010. The Bahnhofstrasse 5 location is in a pedestrian zone only few meters from Hannover Central Station and just off the popular shopping promenade “Niki de Saint Phalle“. As always, there will be a free, specially printed Apple Store T-shirts for the first visitors.
If you are in Germany and want to knock out two birds with one stone, you can reserve an iPhone for the Hannover Store here.

Apple: Almost 50% of the iOS devices that visited the App Store Sunday were iOS 8 (9to5Mac readers: 80%)
Apple isn’t bragging on its iOS 8 adoption numbers like it has in years past because it appears uptake has been slightly slower. The reason? The much bigger iOS 8 download doesn’t fit on many people’s devices which are often stuffed to capacity with music, movies, photos and apps.
(Hint: Here’s how to slim some GBs off your iOS 8 device or install via iTunes on a Mac/PC which doesn’t require extra space)
Apple’s latest numbers are for Sunday September 21, 2014 and show that from people who visited the App Store on their iOS device, 46% were already on the new iOS 8. On one hand this number is skewed higher because most of the early adopter nature of frequent App Store visitors but on the other hand many people visit the App Store from older devices that can’t be updated to iOS 8.
Apple’s own numbers show something else slightly troubling. App Store app submissions are being delayed slightly as of iOS 8 launch with only 74% of app updates and 53% of new apps being reviewed. Apple is usually in the high 90% range on iOS as it is with Mac.
As for 9to5Mac readers’ iOS adoption, the numbers are much much higher than the general audience as you’d probably expect. This morning, we’re close to 80% iOS 8 adoption. The pie chart from Google Analytics taken at 5:30 am ET is below:

Casey Neistat’s latest video isn’t really news to anyone nor does it appear that Apple can or will do anything about the problem but perhaps this years delayed launch in China has exacerbated it even more. What can Apple do in this situation?

Startup turns the iPhone into a portable optometrist office for quick field eye exams and prescriptions
It seems like every week there is another revolutionary use of smartphones with the potential to change the way we do things. Smart Vision Labs has created such an invention with the help of the iPhone and its low-light 8-megapixel camera. In short, what it does is enable is quick and inexpensive eye prescription diagnosis with a portable lens hooked up to an iPhone. The invention allows doctors to carry around in their pockets what used to require a visit to the optometrist’s office.

Review: T-Mobile’s $25 Personal CellSpot is a no-brainer for Magenta customers and handover Wifi calling may even win some converts
[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8jEi-g9hHI]
In all of the hoopla over the new iPhone 6/Plus, T-Mobile in the US and EE in the UK got themselves a pretty big exclusive (for now). T-Mobile has been offering Wifi calling for years but it’s recently come to the iPhone – and with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, gets even better with cell/wifi handover. (T-Mobile partnered with Gogo to enable texting and voicemails on participating airline journeys as well).
Wifi calling, for some, may be the type of feature that makes or breaks a carrier relationship. With it, you can make calls anywhere there is a wifi signal. That means basements, country homes and even foreign countries are all now open to making and receiving calls from your carrier phone number…

IDG shutters Macworld Magazine, much of the editorial staff let go
[tweet https://twitter.com/pinatubo2000/status/509752111790579712]
[tweet https://twitter.com/jsnell/status/509749300683735041]
International Data Group (IDG) is shutting down Macworld Magazine, the long time Apple periodical according to tweets by staff and conversations I’ve had with personnel. Dan Miller, Editor, Macworld tweeted the following:
The Macworld.com website will remain open [although as a shell of its former self -ed] with a reduced staff according to Miller, who himself is leaving in a month.
As a former contributor and fan of Macworld.com it is sad to see the publication go. Ironically, the transition from print to digital hastened by Apple’s own iPad and other online tools made the publication one of the last remaining Apple publications in print.
There’s no word yet on the fate of the annual trade show of the same name that has also taken a hit since Apple stopped attending. We’ll update as we hear more.
Update: Dan Miller wrote in to clarify that he never implied that the magazine “would be a shell of its former self” (even though most of the names and faces that were the backbone of the magazine have been let go).

The iPhone 5 ad that Apple wants you to forget
[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O99m7lebirE]
Ahhhh, it seems like just yesterday when 4-inches was the perfect screen size for everyone’s thumbs no matter how big or small you were. Well, today Apple is expected to move up the screen size ladder a few rungs to 4.7 and 5.5 inches – a pretty big leap.
So what about the commercial above that aired at the launch of the iPhone 5? Perhaps Apple has a plan for that.
