Beyonce’s ‘Tidal exclusive’ album, Lemonade, now available on iTunes to download

Initially billed as an exclusive to Tidal, Beyonce’s new Lemonade album is now available to buy on iTunes. Jay-Z’s streaming music service had been touting itself as an exclusive location to listen to Beyonce’s latest album. While Tidal maintains exclusive streaming rights, the album is now being freely sold for download elsewhere.

Tidal has attempted similar stunts in the past, with Kanye West famously stating his album ‘The Life of Pablo’ would never be on Apple Music and would be exclusive to Tidal. However, a track from the album soon showed up on Apple’s services a few weeks later. There is currently a class action lawsuit forming around the false claims of exclusivity.

Apple is ready to show the first fruits of its Beats acquisition next week. As we first reported in early March, Apple is planning to introduce its long-awaited Beats-based streaming music service at its Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday, June 8th. Blending Apple interface design and features from the Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine-created Beats Music app, Apple’s service, known internally as “Apple Music,” is built to take on Spotify and Pandora with several new features and a subscription model. Additionally, Apple is working on overhauling its widely panned iTunes Radio service by striking deals with popular artists and DJs. When Apple enters a new business, you know it’s not going to do so in a half-hearted, small way. When it launches its Apple-branded Beats Music service later this year, it’s a no-brainer to predict that it’s going to be a big deal for the music industry. With Apple’s deep integration of Beats into its existing iOS/iTunes ecosystem exclusively revealed by Mark Gurman added into the mix, I wonder whether the unique selling points being notched up by Apple could be enough to leave existing big-name players like Spotify, Google Play and Rdio dead in the water?

That’s rather a grand idea, of course. As of last month, Spotify reached 15 million paid subscribers–up 50% in the last six months alone. Beats Music had only a little over 100,000 subscribers at the time Apple bought the company, and is rumored to have only 2-3 times as many now. But an Apple-ified Beats Music service has four things going for it …

iTunes-exclusive Beyoncé album breaks a million sales in five days

Beyoncé’s surprise move in releasing a previously-unannounced album exclusively on iTunes seems to have paid off big-time: after setting a new iTunes record as the fastest-selling album ever, the self-titled BEYONCÉ album has now sold more than a million copies in just five days.

It’s quite an achievement, especially at a time when music downloads may have passed their peak, but as music industry analyst Bob Lefsetz observed (via AtD), it doesn’t mean other artists can expect to pull off the same trick.

Apple: Beyonce breaks iTunes Store record w/ 828,773 albums sold in 3 days

Apple today announced a new record for the fastest selling album ever on the iTunes Store with the latest release from Beyonce selling 828,773 albums in its first three days of release. The new ‘visual album’ featuring 17 videos was released unexpectedly late last week as an iTunes exclusive.

BEYONCÉ is infused with 14 new songs and 17 visually stunning, provocative videos shot around the world from Houston to New York City to Paris, and Sydney to Rio de Janeiro, all before the album’s release. The album represents Beyoncé’s biggest sales week ever.

The self-titled album is Beyonce’s fifth and also takes the record for first week album sales in the US with 617,213 albums sold since its release on Dec. 13. Compare those numbers with the 310k copies Beyonce’s last studio album “4” sold during its first week.

Billboard previously reported that the album had sold 80,000 copies in just three hours on its first day of release.

Beyoncé releases unannounced self-titled ‘visual album’ exclusively on iTunes

Beyoncé surprised fans tonight by releasing a previously unannounced album exclusively on iTunes. The “visual album,” as it’s called in the item description, has taken over the store’s front page. It features 14 songs and 18 videos, including videos for each song, and a digital booklet.

The album is currently only available for purchase in its entirety, but the store description says the individual songs will be made available on Friday, December 20th.

Beyoncé is available for $15.99 on the iTunes Store.

Despite rapper Jay-Z having been temporarily in bed with Samsung earlier this year, Beyoncé proved herself the better half of the relationship when she voluntarily serenaded a fan over FaceTime at a concert in South Australia recently.

Beyoncé smoothly walked across the stage reaching out to her adoring fans when someone offered their iPhone in mid-FaceTime call.

“This is a first,” she said while taking the iPhone and still performing her song. “Hi. He’s doing FaceTime right now. Nice to meet you.”
