iPhone 14 Pro has a hidden toggle to enable black-and-white always-on display mode

The iPhone 14 Pro always-on display does not work like most Android phone always-on display modes (consisting of mostly black pixels with an always-visible clock). It works more like the Apple Watch, where the always-on mode is almost identical to the standard lock screen – the same colorful wallpaper and information-rich widgets, just dimmed.

Many people getting their hands on the new iPhones were surprised by this. In fact, some of the initial reviews suggest disabling the always-on display feature altogether because it was too distracting. It turns out, though, there’s a hidden way to try a black-and-white always-on display on your iPhone …

Apple says software update coming next week to fix iPhone 14 Pro camera shake issue

iPhone 14 camera shaking

Apple will be releasing a software update to fix the camera shake / rattling issue affecting iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models. Apple told Bloomberg that the update will be available next week.

This will resolve customer concerns that the violent camera shake problems may have been a result of a hardware defect with their new phones. Instead, users should be able to simply install the software update when it is available.

iPhone 14 internal redesign significantly reduces cost of cracked back glass repairs

Although the iPhone 14 looks almost identical to the iPhone 13 on the outside, it is a different story on the inside.

As evidenced in this iFixit teardown, Apple has made it much easier to repair the back glass panel. The back glass can now be removed independently of the logic board, making repairs much cheaper. Previously, only the front glass was separably removable. And, it seems Apple is also passing this cost savings onto consumers …

Apple executive confirms incessant iOS 16 clipboard paste permission prompts are a bug

Update: The Wall Street Journal reports that the clipboard bug will be fixed in next week’s software update, along with a fix for the OIS camera rattling bug afflicting some iPhone 14 Pro owners.

Seemingly starting in the release version of iOS 16, many iPhone users are seeing an annoying behavior where the system presents a clipboard paste permissions prompt (almost) every time the user tries to paste some text from another app.

In a reply sent to a MacRumors reader who had shared his frustrations with Apple SVP Craig Federighi over email, Apple executive Ron Huang confirms the behavior is indeed a bug.

iPhone 14 satellite connectivity enabled by Qualcomm modem and custom Apple-designed RF components

iOS 16.1 to feature ‘Satellite Connection Demo’ for iPhone 14 users

iOS 16: Three useful features Apple removed with the iPhone lock screen overhaul

ios 16 wallpaper

It’s not all good news though. We also lost a few capabilities compared to iOS 15. But we also lost some capabilities compared to iOS 15 in the process. Here are three things missing from iOS 16 lock screen experience that hopefully Apple will bring back in a future update …

iOS 16: Three-finger system gesture bug impacts apps and games [update: fixed in 16.1]

Update: This bug has now been fixed in iOS 16.1 beta channel. Some game developers are warning players not to update to iOS 16 due to a bug with the system three-finger gestures, affecting gameplay. The issue is that the triple-tap system gesture to reveal the undo/cut/copy/paste menu, and the three-finger swipe gestures to undo and redo, are a bit overzealous in iOS 16, activating in contexts where they shouldn’t.

Most normal apps will work fine, as they only rely on single finger touch interactions. But games and apps that require the user to perform multi-finger gestures — such as rhythm games or music-making virtual instrument apps — are impacted as the system gestures are inadvertently firing, stealing touches or generally interfering with the intended app experiences.

iPhone 14 Battery

Apple iPhone 14 battery replacement cost is $99, 43% more than previous models

Although Apple surprisingly did not raise the base prices of the iPhone 14 lineup last week, one thing that is getting more expensive is the cost of battery replacements. Apple says it will cost $99 for the company to replace the battery in your iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. This is up from $69 for iPhone 13, a price increase of about 43%.
