Earlier this week, an investigation detailed that Apple and other tech giants had used YouTube subtitles to train their AI models. This included over 170,000 videos from the likes of MKBHD, Mr. Beast, and more. Apple then used this dataset to train its open-source OpenELM models, which were released back in April.

Apple has now confirmed to 9to5Mac, however, that OpenELM doesn’t power any of its AI or machine learning features – including Apple Intelligence.

I’ve been running the iOS 18 beta since a few hours after WWDC last month. Now that the public beta is available for everyone, I figured I’d share some early thoughts on a few of my favorite iOS 18 features so far.

Math Notes and Smart Script are two of the most impressive features included as part of iPadOS 18 this year. In a new interview with Chris Lawley, Apple has provided more detail on how these features work with a deep dive into some of the tech behind them.

Ming-Chi Kuo reports that Apple has once again delayed its plans to use new resin-coated copper (RCC) components in the iPhone. This change, which would save internal space for the iPhone, was originally rumored to occur with the iPhone 16, then delayed to the iPhone 17, and now delayed again.

Apple is rolling out a big update to the Apple Store app for iPhone and iPad today. The new version of the app focuses on a “fresh, more curated experience” for finding new products to buy and managing existing products.

Apple’s Beats brand is teaming up with Minecraft to launch a special edition version of Beats Solo 4 headphones. These are the same Beats Solo 4 that I reviewed earlier this year, just with some classic Minecraft designs all over them.

In addition to major new home screen customization options in iOS 18, Apple has also made it easier to rearrange your home screen. Most notably, you can now adjust widget sizes right from your iPhone’s home screen.

Apple is kicking off a new high-profile ad campaign today focused on Safari. The campaign takes direct aim at other browsers, such as Chrome, where “your browsing is being watched.” Safari, meanwhile, offers several robust privacy protections to protect your web browsing data.

Overcast, the popular podcast player by Marco Arment, has gotten a major overhaul. As it celebrates its tenth anniversary, Overcast has been completely rewritten to be faster, more reliable, and more accessible.
