Apple shares updated aerial shot of Campus 2 construction progress

Apple-aerial-march-23

Apple today shared an updated aerial shot of its under construction Campus 2 project since last checking in earlier this month. As always, the company posted the image above to the City of Cupertino’s webpage tracking updates on the project.

The new image shares a different perspective of the site compared to photos Apple shared earlier this month and views from the latest 4K drone flyover.

Earlier this month CEO Tim Cook spoke to Fast Company about the new campus:

It’s critical that Apple do everything it can to stay informal. And one of the ways that you stay informal is to be together. One of the ways that you ensure collaboration is to make sure people run into each other—not just at the meetings that are scheduled on your calendar, but all the serendipitous stuff that happens every day in the cafeteria and walking around.

Apple expects to begin moving in around 12,000 of its employees into the new Campus by 2017 if it completes the project on schedule.

We’ve been tracking all of the official and unofficial updates we’ve received on the project in our Apple Campus 2 project timeline.

Refreshed Apple Wireless Keyboard w/ backlit keys appears on Apple’s website

Site default logo image

Apple Wireless Keyboard backlit keys power

Update: It looks like Apple removed the images of the refreshed keyboard after we published this story.

A refreshed version of the Apple Wireless Keyboard appears to be on the way as an updated model was spotted today on Apple’s Czech Republic online store (via letemsvetemapplem.eu).

While Apple appears to have let the image of the new keyboard leak early, it hasn’t updated the accompanying description for the product to mention new features. We can, however, make out a few changes including new buttons on the F5 and F6 keys indicating the new model may feature backlit keys. Apple also switched the CD eject button, which is all but useless for most people at this point, and replaced it with a power button the same as the keyboards on its MacBooks in recent years.

The best iPhone/iPad USB flash drives with Lightning connectors

Site default logo image

SAMSUNG CSC

There are now several companies selling USB thumb drives for iPhone and iPad since the first ones with built-in Lightning connectors debuted late last year. By connecting a small and lightweight thumb drive directly to your iOS device, you can avoid limitations of onboard storage and cloud services and instead store and stream media like music, video, and photos using the drive’s additional storage.

A few things to consider when searching for the right Lightning drive: some have a battery that requires charging, companion apps for managing and streaming content from an iOS device vary in quality, and I found some have designs that make using the drives and your iOS device at the same time easier than others. Lastly, pricing varies quite a bit based on the the options below with drives ranging from 8GB to 256GB and other options offering bring-your-own storage using a micro SD card slot.

Tag Heuer, Breitling, Swatch & others usher in Swiss smartwatch movement ahead of Apple Watch

Site default logo image

The Swiss watch market is bracing for the smartwatch movement, with many fearing another downturn for traditional mechanical timepieces much the same as when low cost Quartz movements were first introduced.

Industry players don’t intend to sit around and see how Apple Watch sells against traditional watches, however, as many of the watch world’s biggest luxury watchmakers— Tag Heuer, Breitling, Swatch, Frederique Constant—are showing off their first smart watches at Baselworld 2015 this week, the premier tradeshow for the jewelry industry where most Swiss watchmakers choose to unveil their latest creations each year.

A few on the list below were announced in the weeks leading up to Baselworld which officially starts today, but this week will be the first time anyone actually gets their hands on these new Swiss smartwatches that hope to compete with the Apple Watch. We’ll be updating this list as more luxury smart watches get unveiled in Basel, Switzerland.

You WON’T need an appointment to try on Apple Watch in retail stores (but expect to wait)

Site default logo image

Apple-Watch-table-display-retail-01

How will Apple Watch be displayed in retail stores next month? Apple’s own “try on by appointment” language led many people to believe appointments would be required to actually go hands-on with Watches before making a purchase. 9to5Mac has confirmed, however, that try on appointments won’t be necessary and that retail staff plan to accommodate walk-in customers wishing to try on an Apple Watch.

Sources confirm Apple will finally allow MacBook battery packs and third-party chargers with USB-C

Site default logo image

2015-MacBook-USB-C-01

USB-C has become the biggest topic of conversation following Apple’s introduction of the new 12-inch MacBook. After years of separate power, data, and video ports, Apple is now pushing USB-C as a replacement for its own proprietary MagSafe charging solution, as well as other I/O ports included on its previous laptops. Going forward, MacBook users can connect a USB-C multiport adapter to handle whatever accessories they want— USB-C can even support 4k displays using a DisplayPort Alt Mode.

But what accessories will the new MacBook support? Over the last few days, we’ve talked with sources close to the situation to find out what Apple plans on supporting, and whether there will be any limitations for USB-C accessories. The short and amazing answer is that most accessories supporting the USB Type-C specifications should work with your new MacBook. Apple won’t be doing anything to block any specific types of accessories— in fact, it will even allow external batteries or other Macs (!!) to charge the new MacBook…
