iPhone 5c pre-orders go live across the web

Site default logo image

Screen Shot 2013-09-13 at 3.07.17 AM

Following the announcement of the iPhone 5c on Tuesday, Apple is now accepting pre-orders for the colorful new smartphone through the Apple Store. The iPhone 5S will not be available for pre-order, but both models will arrive in-stores and at doors on September 20th.

If you’d rather try your luck with one of the carrier stores, U.S. customers can also pre-order through the AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, or T-Mobile online stores. Like the Apple Store, these sites tend to crash every year during iPhone pre-orders, and supplies will likely run out quickly, so if you want to pre-order your phone, now is the time to do it. You can find more pre-order info, stores, and deals in our iPhone pre-order guide.

A look at what some high-profile apps will look like when iOS 7 hits

Apple announced on Tuesday that iOS 7 will be publicly available on September 18th. The revamped OS moves completely away from the realistic designs of the past six generations, dropping almost all “artificial shadows” (as Apple SVP Craig Federighi called them), gloss, and even button borders. Instead, the Jony Ive-inspired interface features an entirely rethought design language that focuses heavily on large icons, lightweight fonts, whitespace, transparency, and conservative use of color.

We previously took a look at what some of Apple’s own in-house apps could look like when redesigned for iOS 7. During Apple’s September 10th event, Federighi flashed up a slide displaying the upcoming iOS 7 updates for many third-party applications. None of the apps were labeled, but we’ve tracked down names for most of them.

The apps featured are:

TeeVee 2.2 introduces unwatched episode tracking, iCloud sync, and more

The popular TV guide app TeeVee was updated late last night to version 2.2. The update brings a new design to the app’s main page, along with other tweaks to the iconography and typography throughout the app. Other notable new features include iCloud syncing of saved shows and unwatched episodes across devices, and an episode tracking feature that displays how many episodes of a show you have missed on the main page.

As with previous versions, you can view schedules for your favorite shows, schedule notifications before or after a new episode of any given show airs, get a summary of any episode, watch iTunes previews of most shows, and more.

TeeVee 2.2 is a free update for existing users and a $.99 purchase for new downloads.

Review: Grades 3 is a great way to track your classes and projects

Site default logo image

Earlier this year, at long last, I took my final exam and finished college. While I was in school, I tried a bunch of apps to keep track of my assignments and projects. I also spent a lot of time calculating how many projects I could ignore completely as well as the lowest possible grade I could get on the ones I actually did in order to maintain my GPA and scholarships.

Most of the time the apps didn’t help much and I just gave up and hoped for the best. This scared the heck out of my parents, who then proceeded to bother me about school even more.

When I saw the promo video for Grades 3, I’ll admit I got a little upset. I spent four years in college, and as soon as I get out, the app I always wanted finally exists. While I would never really wish to be back in school all over again, if I had to, Grades 3 would be the first app I put on my phone. Let’s dive in and see what this app can do for you.

Apple announces colorful new iPhone 5c featuring an all-new body design

iphone2013-0069

During today’s new product announcement, Apple unveiled an all-new addition to the iPhone family. The iPhone 5c (with a lowercase “c”) replaces the iPhone 5 in Apple’s mobile lineup. The 5c features many of the internal components of the previous iPhone 5, but the exterior of the device has been completely redesigned.

Rather than a metal and glass design like that of previous models, the back of the iPhone 5’s casing is made of plastic which comes in a variety of colors. The new device closely resembles the fifth-generation iPod touch, which Apple debuted last year.

Internally, the phone sports the same A6 processor found in the iPhone 5, an 8MP iSight camera, and an improved HD FaceTime camera. All of the usual sensors are also present, such as the accelerometer, GPS, compass, and gyroscope.

In terms of connectivity, the iPhone 5c supports Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11a/b/g/n 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, more LTE bands than any other smartphone on the market.

Apple has also created custom silicon cases for the iPhone 5c. These cases will ship for $29 each.

The iPhone 5c will run $99 for the 16 GB model and $199 for 32 GB with a two-year contract. The phone will be available for pre-order on Friday September 13th and will ship on the 20th. While the contract version of the phone will only be available on Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon, an unlocked version for T-Mobile is also available. That version will cost $549 for the 16 GB model and $649 for the 32 GB.

Download-iWork-for-iOS-iPhoto-9-2-Betas-for-iCloud-Developer-News-2

Apple has just announced that setting up any new iOS device will ship with free copies of iWork, iPhoto, and iMovie for iOS. The 3 iWork apps including Pages, Keynote, and Numbers, in addition to the two iLife apps– iPhoto and iMovie– will be available for free to users purchasing a new device. During the setup process, users will be prompted to download the five Apple apps for free. Apple will be making the apps available to all iOS 7 compatible devices purchased after September 1st.

Prior to today’s announcement, we suggested that Apple could make the apps available for free after announcing its new iWork for iCloud web apps.

iOS 7 will be available for free starting September 18th

Apple has just announced that iOS 7 will be publicly available on September 18th. The new version of Apple’s mobile OS will be available on the iPhone 4, 4S, 5, 5c, and 5S, the third- and fourth-generation iPads, iPad mini, and fifth-generation iPod touch.

Curiously, Apple lists iCloud Keychain as “coming soon” on the iOS 7 page, though most features aren’t marked that way. This could indicate that the feature will be released in a later update to iOS closer to the release of Mavericks, which is required to sync stored passwords across devices.

Microsoft releases Xbox Music for iOS with ad-free music streaming and cross-platform syncing

Site default logo image

Microsoft released a brand-new Xbox Music app for iOS this evening. The app features ad-free streaming from Microsoft’s massive song catalog, with custom stations built around specific artists, songs, or albums. These playlists can be synced to your other Xbox Music-capable devices, such as an Xbox 360.

The app requires an Xbox Music Pass to work, which comes in both free or paid varieties. The app description doesn’t state that a paid subscription is needed, but free accounts are limited to only ten hours per month after the first six months of use.

The iOS app is available now for free on the App Store.

Amazon issues “required” iOS Kindle app update to install prior to iOS 7

Amazon’s Kindle for iOS app got an update today to prepare for iOS 7’s upcoming release. According to the change log, the update is required before users update to iOS 7. Failure to install the new version of the app prior to updating to iOS 7 could cause users to have to login again and re-download their books.

While this issue isn’t as signficant as losing all of your Google Authenticator tokens, it could be a bit of an annoyance for users to have to re-download their reading material.

The Kindle update is available on the App Store now.

Fan files class-action lawsuit against Apple over Breaking Bad’s short season pass

Site default logo image

Screen Shot 2013-09-08 at 3.26.45 PM

A fan of AMC’s Breaking Bad has filed a lawsuit over how Apple handled the show’s final season in the iTunes Store. Because the network decided to break the fifth and final season into two parts, both of which are referred to as “season 5” by the network, Apple broke the iTunes copy of the season into two parts as well.

The only problem is that iTunes Season Pass holders who expected to receive the final sixteen episodes altogether learned last month that they would only receive the first half. Those looking to download the second half of the season would have to purchase a separate Season Pass for what iTunes refers to as “the final season.”

Noam Lazebnik, a viewer from Ohio, insists that Apple engaged in false advertising and filed a lawsuit in San Jose on Friday seeking full refunds for users who had purchased “the final season” on iTunes. If “legalese” is your thing, you can read the entire lawsuit below.

UK teen launches Thinkspace, seeks to bring software development to high schools around the world

PRThinkspaceNI

Thinkspace, an organization created by sixteen-year-old James Anderson, seeks to “inspire the next generation of app developers” through dedicated coding zones in high schools across the globe. Anderson formally launched Thinkspace this month with campuses in Plymouth and Northern Ireland.

Anderson first came up with the idea for Thinkspace when he became disappointed with the UK educational system’s approach to computer information and related topics. Rather than attempt to change the curriculum, Anderson sought to work around it by creating “Thinkspaces” within schools.

WSJ: Apple testing larger iPhone screens, some up to six inches

Site default logo image

iPhone-Plus-Blanc-02

The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is testing larger iPhone displays, ranging from 4.8 to 6 inches. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard reports of this, but it does give further credence to the rumors. While the next generation of iPhones, which will be announced on September 10th, will include two different designs, the screen sizes are expected to remain the same. A more diverse family of displays, however, could in the pipeline for future generations.

Apple emailing developers to get ready for Safari notifications in Mavericks

Screen+Shot+2013-09-04+at+7.14.38+PM

Apple sent an email to members of its developer program today prompting them to add push notification capabilities to their websites. Push notification support is one of the many new features in Safari on OS X Mavericks, and allows web publishers to send native push notifications through Apple’s notification service even when Safari isn’t running.

Back in June, we posted an exclusive report and video with the first public website that takes advantage of the new push notification feature.

Google Authenticator for iPhone redesigned, supports iPhone 5 & Retina

UpdateAs was pointed out by 9to5Mac readers in the comments below, the update was zapping account data. Google says that it is aware of the issue and has removed the app from the App Store.

The Google Authenticator app for iPhone was updated this evening with an entirely new design. Version 2.0 introduces a host of visual changes, including the long-awaited addition of Retina graphics (which have been missing from the app since the iPhone 4 launched) and support for the iPhone 5. Even after the long wait for what seems like a relatively minor update, the app still does not natively support the iPad.

The app’s new look is based on the “cards” motif seen in other Google app releases recently. Most of the functionality seems unchanged.

Google Authenticator is Google’s two-factor authentication app, which is used similarly to the Find My iPhone app (or an SMS message) in Apple’s 2-step verification process.

The update is available for free now on the iOS App Store.

Review: DeskConnect beats Apple to AirDrop-like file sharing between iOS and Mac

Site default logo image

From time to time, I find myself needing to send some files from my Mac to my iPhone, or from my phone to my computer. This is especially true with things like screenshots for reviews. In the past I have used Photo Streams or email to get the images from my phone to my Mac, but both of those are a little more annoying than they need to be.

Using a Photo Stream requires me to open iPhoto on my Mac, which means it will probably take forever just to grab a few images. For email I have to select all the images from my Camera Roll and either mail them five-at-a-time from the photos app, or copy them, switch to Mail, paste them into a message (which somehow bypasses the absurd five-image limit on in-line sharing in the Photos app) and then address the message to myself and wait for it to send, then wait for it to arrive on my computer.

There are also a ton of apps that allow you to connect to your phone through a web browser to transfer files, but those require the app to be running on your phone, and for the app to be in a specific mode to receive the files. It’s not seamless and it’s not as effective as it could be.

This is not a good workflow. That’s where DeskConnect comes in. DeskConnect is an pair of apps for iOS and Mac that avoids all of the unpleasantness of connecting the two devices and allows you to seamlessly send files from one to the other.
