Apple Pay

See All Stories

Apple Pay is Apple’s mobile payments solution that allows users to seamlessly use their phone to pay for purchases both in retail stores, apps, and the web. The service was first introduced in 2014 and has been expanding to additional countries ever since then.

The service works in retail stores by simply holding your iPhone over a compatible checkout terminal and authenticating the purchase via Touch ID, or your Apple Watch with no further authentication required once you have unlocked the Watch. It’ss compatible with all iPhones from 6/6 Plus and and beyond, and all versions of Apple Watch.

In apps, it works by pulling in your card information and seamlessly allowing you to checkout using that card information. This prevents you from having to manually enter your card information every time you want to make a purchase. In addition to working with all of the iPhone models previously mentioned, Apple Pay in apps also works on iPads from the iPad mini 3 and Air 2 and beyond. Apple Pay isĀ supported on the Mac and on the web withĀ iOS 10 and macOS Sierra and beyond.

In addition to working with debit and credit cards, Apple Pay also works with rewards cards and store cards. This means that you can add something like your Starbucks card, Walgreens Balance Rewards card, and more to the Wallet app to easily keep track of everything.

To set up Apple Pay on an iPhone, open the Wallet app on iOS 11 and tap the plus (+) icon in the top right corner to begin, then follow the prompts. To add a debit card to the Apple Watch, go to the Apple Watch app on iPhone and look for the Wallet & Apple Pay section, then Add Credit or Debit Card section.

Apple Pay is the dominant mobile payments solution, even forcing its biggest potential competitor to shutdown, and as the service continues to expand, it will only get better.Ā View theĀ full list of retailersĀ and banks that support the service on Apple’s website

Full rollout of Apple Pay on New York metro system delayed by coronavirus

Apple Pay on New York metro system delayed

The full rollout of Apple Pay on the New York metro system has been delayed due to the coronavirus, says the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).

The MTA first offered contactless card payment, which supports Apple Pay, for limited lines back in May of last year. Progress since then has been slow, however, and there have been some glitches along the way …

Apple adds 3% cash back to Walgreen’s drive through when using physical Apple Card

One of the key benefits of the Apple Card is getting 3% cash back at select merchants when using Apple Pay. This list includes vendors like Nike, Uber, T-Mobile, and Walgreens. Many retailers are currently limiting in-store transactions and encouraging curbside pick up and delivery when available. Earlier tonight, Apple announced that Walgreens transactions made with the physical Apple Card would now be eligible for the 3% reward just like they were made with Apple Pay.

Publix now lets you buy your Pub Sub and groceries with Apple Pay on iPhone or Apple Watch

Shopping at Publix may be a pleasure, but checking out at the grocery store chain has been a bit archaic for the last five years.Ā The retailer waited half a decade to acknowledge Apple Pay, but the contactless payment service may finally be accepted by the grocery store chain. No better time than a social distancing mandate to embrace contactless payments from 2014 for buying your Pub Sub, right?

Comment: Apple Pay revenue is heading toward a multi-billion dollar business

Apple Pay revenue

Apple Pay revenue hasn’t gotten much attention so far. The most valuable role Apple Pay plays for the Cupertino company is further lock-in to the ecosystem.

Once you’ve experienced the convenience of Apple Watch payments in particular, and know the security you get from the use of Apple Pay on any device, it’s not something you’ll want to give up. (Sure, there’s Google Pay and Samsung Pay too, but it still adds friction to switching platforms.)

But a news report yesterday prompted me to do some back-of-an-envelope calculations, and I reckon Apple’s mobile wallet service is rapidly headed toward becoming a multi-billion dollar revenue stream…
