Although cloud storage tends to be the default for file sharing today, I am seeing a renewed interest in local network attached storage for teams that want to avoid recurring subscription costs. I recently picked up the UGREEN NASync DXP4800 Plus, and it’s becoming a great option for teams wanting local file sharing while eliminating subscription costs.
Smart plugs are the gateway drug for HomeKit. They’re low-cost and easy to install, and you can get many benefits from them. There are dozens upon dozens of options on where to start, though. The meross MSS315 smart plug delivers almost everything you’d want in a smart plug: Matter support, low cost, and small in size. The only thing it’s missing is Thread support and 5Ghz Wi-Fi.

If you’d asked me what I thought about a product that included a speaker, microphone, and MagSafe charger, I’d have thought it was a weird combination. But that is just what the AnkerWork S600 is, and it’s turned out to be a really useful product on my desk.

Meeting Owls have become the “TiVo” or “Kleenax” for conference room cameras. Every product I see in conference rooms that isn’t a Meeting Owl often looks like it was designed to mimic the look and functionality. I’ve been using them since 2019, and they are the best way to bridge the gap between in-room meeting attendees and folks dialing in remotely. Recently, Owl Labs released the Meeting Owl 4+, and it brings everything that, in my opinion, was missing from the previous version.
Air purifiers are one of my favorite HomeKit accessories. Even though I live in an area with pretty decent air quality, I keep them running around our home to clean up the air for my family. I recently picked up the new Smartmi E1, the best-looking HomeKit air purifier on the market.

Yesterday, we saw one of the largest IT outages in history, and it looked a lot like what many people had predicted would happen when the year 2000 hit and the Y2K bug occurred. Yesterday, people around the world began seeing the “blue screen of death” as they began their work day. This error caused delays for banks, airlines, railways, cellular providers, TV and radio broadcasters, and grocery stores. It only affected Windows, though.
A problem in a security update from CrowdStrike caused the error. You can read their blog for more information. CrowdStrike is a fantastic company, and they make incredible products. Their products are simply some of the best security tools in the industry, but unfortunately – accidents can happen.
Macs were unaffected, though – and there’s a good reason. Here’s how Apple protects the Mac mass outages like what the world witnessed on Friday.
Summer is in full swing here in the United States, but my traveling is over for the summer. I spent the week before Memorial Day in Lisbon, Portugal, the week after Memorial Day near the Gulf of Mexico, and a few days in early June in Las Vegas for CriblCon. Having a HomeKit Home hub gives me remote access to all my favorite HomeKit accessories for monitoring energy, tricking would-be burglars by changing my lights, and much more. Here are some of my favorite HomeKit accessories for the summer.

Keeping your iPhone charged in the car is one of the key use cases for MagSafe, and I’ve long been a fan of air vent mounts as it keeps my iPhone cool in the summer months. Today, I am looking at the Spigen OneTap Pro 3.

MagSafe is a very versatile technology that unlocks many interesting use cases. Many of them involve charging, but occasionally, you’ll come across one that has nothing to do with charging and aims to simplify getting the perfect viewing angle. This week, I am looking at the Baseus Magsafe Car Mount.

A few weeks ago, Verizon announced that they were launching a complete end-to-end device management program called Business Complete. Verizon Business Complete includes purchasing, setup, mobile device management (MDM), 24/7 support, repair/replacement, and 24-month upgrades. This is a telling announcement and something I suspect we’ll see more of in the future.
Even as an Apple user, I can appreciate some of the work Google has done with its Nest lineup. I use the Google Nest doorbell and the Google Nest Cam with Floodlight in my house, and I am very happy with them. I use the Starling Home Hub. The latest Starling firmware brings support for something that unlocks a new use case for folks who like Google’s hardware but not the cloud service.
